fucking collection agencies coming after you for $95 phone bills from two years ago that you haven't heard about in the interim period

Seriously, this fucking pisses me off. I moved from an apartment a couple of years ago and right now I'm hearing about an old bill that I'm positive I paid off. What the fuck?

advice on dealing with collection agencies please. If I was still dealing with SBC I might have a shot at getting this waived but these jerks sent it out...

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Collection agencies are the worst. There is one that calls my work number looking for a girl who used to work here. Of course, they never believe me when I say that she does not work here.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I've thought about working for a collection agency. That would be weird, but I think I'd get a novel out of it.

Huck, Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

AT&T's collection agency just tracked me down for something from almost 5 years ago. I'm impressed!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend of a friend works for one of these and I've heard some funny stories about him calling a person's neighbors and asking them to leave notes on the indebted's door about the debt. Heh.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

what about THE FEDS coming after you for student loans? like, men in suits going to your HR Office. that was fun!

kephm, Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

and of course I'm on my phone trying to deal with SBC whilst sitting at my desk and my goddamn nosy coworker keeps waving his hands about and giving me advice while I'm in the middle of my conversation, advice that isn't remotely good.

"Give me the phone, I'll have them owing you money in five minutes."

"Ask SBC to waive it."

"Tell them you'll go to court."

"Just joke around with her, be friendly, she'll waive it."

"Ask the collection agency to send it back to SBC, they have to do that."

WHY MUST I WORK WITH THIS INSANE LITTLE MAN

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

And of course when I wave him off to indicate "can't talk, on the phone", he comes over and leaves notes on my desk completely unrelated to the issue I'm dealing with.

"I can get you dental insurance for $35 dollars a year!"

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you sure you haven't been condemned for sins in a past life at this point?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

when I searched for "past life" I came up with this:

http://members.aol.com/dawndove/portrait.jpg

yes, this was me apparently

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't care about your goddamned ring tones, don't ask me which one you should choose, and for fuck's sake one day you'll realize that saying "cheese and crackers!" whenever you're frustrated is entering new realms of annoying behavior.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you serious? "cheese and crackers!"

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

is this the staring midget?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yes that would be him

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

cheese and crackers, this is getting bad

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i got collection agencies coming after me too! duck them long enough and they'll reduce the amount to save themselves trouble!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

right now I'm in $herm@n 0@k$

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear you poor bastard, your workmate sounds more mental as the weeks go by!

A credit agency rang for my old flatmate (a good friend of mine) last night. Fucked if I was going to tell them her current details. Whats weird is, no bills or mail for her whatsoever has arrived at my flat since she moved out, she was quick to update everything. So we're both baffled as to why the agency rang me. Do they chase up every old # they can find or something?

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 13 August 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

He was also in the process of redecorating our room for the arrival of V1ct0r1@ G0tt1 from NYC, who was stopping by around 4pm, since she hasn't seen the L.A. offices before. And he was changing his cell phone ring tone to "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" (the show's theme). And he tried to get me into a pool, asking "come on, five bucks to guess what she'll be wearing today".

Maybe he got fired? I left around 3:15.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

a co-worker just got a bill for $950 in overdue parking tickets from the city of philadelphia from when he was a student at temple.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm astounded, Gear!

(Hey, are you going to surface at the next LA FAP or will we conclude you're a ghost? ;-))

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I would put money on either a white outfit or a black outfit.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Wah damn you lot and your faraway FAPs!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I have enough time to listen to precisely one CD per day with my driving time!

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I WILL COME VISIT IF I CAN DO SAN FRAN WITH NICK AND HAVE TIME TO ALSO DO LA AND STUFF.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

And a large, Ned sized cooking pot?

*runs away very quickly*

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

U WILL BE COMING TO THE STATES, TRAYCE?!? MAKE IT TO NYC PLEASE!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

And a large, Ned sized cooking pot?

WAH!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ned-chiladas

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 13 August 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't you start you damned Pole. I was reading in a book about your failed rebellion of 1830 the other day. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Eis: its only a VERY small poss. If I get the payout in time from work and it synchs up with my other 'alf going to the GDC in San Fran (and thats IF he goes), I'd like to tag along - NYC would also be on the cards, as would Montreal - if I have time and money. I dont know if I'll be able to wing it, tho :/

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 13 August 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

If you don't come to LA on that trip, should it happen, I will cry and stamp my feet.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Now Ned, I'd just as soon not go now, just so I could see you throwing a tanty! ;D

(j/k)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 13 August 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

*weeps*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd just like to say ive been using 'cheese and crakers' as an exclamation ever since i was a lonely phone rep & some old guy yelled it at me. it was the highlight of my summer of 1998

kephm, Friday, 13 August 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for reminding me, thread - I just called ntl after they KEPT CHARGING ME for crimes I did not commit services I'd already cancelled, and they agreed with everything I said, dropped the charges and were polite into the bargain!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 13 August 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
argh!! i got the rudest, most demeaning call from a fucking collection agent today. she was horrible and demanded i come to their offices RIGHT NOW. i told her i didn't appreciate the way she was speaking to me and we hung up on each other simultaneously!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 14 October 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

it put me in a bad mood tho

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 14 October 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

seven years pass...

I've been getting an automated call on my cell for a few weeks trying to reach one J!mmy H0lland. The message goes "if this is JH, please press one; if this is not JH, please press 2." But I have The Phear that if I press 2, that will somehow put me in somebody's database for even more annoyance. Yesterday I listened through the whole message for the first time and they ID themselves at the very end -- D!versified Consµltants, a big collection agency apparently. What is the best way to get a collection agency to believe that I am not the droid they're looking for?

Biff Wellington (WmC), Friday, 29 June 2012 14:06 (thirteen years ago)

I had to do this once!!

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Friday, 29 June 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

There were these people after another person with my name, and it was a real hassle! OMG I had seriously totally forgotten about this. I used to get automated phone calls in this voice that I came to imitate really well as I had to tell person after person what had been happening.

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Friday, 29 June 2012 14:08 (thirteen years ago)

Finally I think I called 311 and talked to a police officer about it.

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Friday, 29 June 2012 14:08 (thirteen years ago)

I got some calls at work for our old manager that must have been from collection agencies. I just hung up on them.
