I don't approve

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Meanwhile...

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 13 August 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Benitez has just confirmed it.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 13 August 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Woh - Vieira staying is a big shock.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 13 August 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

He is gutted Real didn't come up with the goods to prise him away from gonnerlandloves Arsenal so much

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 13 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, Dave. His claims that he has too many ties to Arsenal sound decidedly hollow after seemingly trying his heart out to leave.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Friday, 13 August 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'ts touching in this day and age to see a man be so loyal to his salary.

I've no probs with him doing so; I just wish there was some flaming honesty.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 13 August 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Or at least some flaming pie.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 13 August 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

There are plenty of flaming pants.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 13 August 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

From another messageboard:

The plan was to sell Owen, get Morientes/eto'o and use the money to buy Xabi Alonso, and it was a great plan if it worked. But now, Vieira isn't moving to Madrid, There isn't a hope in hell of Liverpool signing Xabi Alonso ahead of Real, and all the money they got for Owen is going on Luis Garcia.

So instead of swapping Owen for Two of the brightest young talents in La Liga, (or Morientes, who is also pretty handy) they have swapped Owen for the fourth choice barcelona winger. Ooh that's got to hurt.

Someone has retorted that Benitez has made a career out of making 4th choice wingers into 1st rate players.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 13 August 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

well Henry was a second choice winger when he came from Juve wasn't he?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

from another message board:
£8 M it says here and in the Liverpool Echo !
It's all they'd offer and his contract runs out in two transfer windows !

Also says he's taken a pay cut !!! and he hasn't even got his coping stones on his gates wall yet. (Workmen there this morning hopefully to finish the job !)

Offered even more money to stay at Anfield, lost personal image rights etc..... either he's in love with Beck's or wants to win something.

Who's my kid gonna play with now after school !

Porkpie (porkpie), Friday, 13 August 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

From that Board again:

I, for one, refuse to believe money played any part in his change of heart. I believe that, as he was standing in the queue in the departure lounge waiting for the flight to Madrid to finalise negotiations, a small, applecheeked cockney boy in a well-worn O2 shirt came up to him, tugged at his jacket and, with tearful eyes pleaded, "Siy it ine't so, Mister Vieira!" Whereupon, he too misted over as he was suddenly overwhelmed by memories of the North Bank singing his praises. He rushed out of the airport, taxi'd straight over to Arsenal's training ground and trotted out onto the pitch with that familiar, elegant gait shouting to a broody Arsene Wenger, "Captain Vieira reporting for duty, sir!" to thunderous and spontaneous applause from his teammates. Then, they all sang the Arsenal Fight Song; "La-de-da-de-da, la-de-da-dee-dee - all good pals and jolly good company. Hoorah!" with Thierry Henry singing louder than anyone.

That's how it went down and I won't hear a word to the contrary.

Consider the cockles of my heart duly warmed.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

hahah!

anyone rate Nunez btw?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't underestimate Luis Garcia. It's Nunez that is the odd one here. Owen and Beattie are worth the same amount of cash!

MikeyG (MikeyG), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

from The Fiver about Owen: "his hamstrings twanging more than John Squire's guitar during I Am The Resurrection"

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really think that the guitars twang in 'I Am The Resurrection'.

I like what Alba said, about the pie.

I have said before that Owen is greedy and disloyal. I think that I have been proved, or proven, right.

the bellefox, Saturday, 14 August 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

'I've no probs with him doing so; I just wish there was some flaming honesty'

He would risk getting a difficult time from the fans, maybe that's why he wasn't honest.

I think Liverpool also did want to sell Owen pf: one year to run on his contract plus his value on the transfer market was decreasing.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 14 August 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The two reason I'm glad Owen has gone to Real are national pride and a worry that Beckham is lonely. Do he and Owen get on?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Beckham said last night on MOTD that he'd been distracted by all his text sex and also put on a stone of muscle and that's why he played shit.

Is Luis Garcia the guy with the freaky died hair? If so, he is an astute purchase.

I've never heard of Nunez. On the other hand, Madrid produce a lot of good players through the ranks. I don't think they produce any bad ones. I've seen the youth team and you're be surprised how 'adult' they are when it comes to feigning injuries, hobbling, having water poured over thier shin pads, etc.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Sunday, 15 August 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

thirteen years pass...

Also says he's taken a pay cut !!! and he hasn't even got his coping stones on his gates wall yet. (Workmen there this morning hopefully to finish the job !)

If Liverpool fans didn't exist we'd have to invent them

Simpson L. (darraghmac), Sunday, 25 February 2018 00:26 (eight years ago)

I wonder if the builder who ended up topping himself after getting swindled by Owen could say maybe he feels some modicum of pity for the Liverpool fans!
