What's the name of that psychological condition where you do something to someone, then accuse them of doing it before they get a chance to accuse you?

Sorry about the lengthy title, I can't describe it any more concisely.

Purely hypothetically, let's say I have a neighbour who throws things at my house and stalks me. I go out to ask him wtf's going on, but before I open my mouth, he accuses me of throwing things at his house and stalking him.

There's an actual medical/psychological name for this condition. Does anyone know what it is?

er um projection or something? I dunno. Either way, sucks dude, sorry about your crazy neighbor.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

who smelt it dealt it?

purple patch (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

transference? neener neener your neighbor's a weiner?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, but neither projection not transferrence seems to be the thing I'm looking for. Hmm.

Dirty Muriel (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, and that last one might not be recognized as a disease yet.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

As I understand it, it's projection if they don't realize that they're doing what they're complaining about. If they do realize - and are justifying their action by imagining that you started it - it's projective identification.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's definitely not projection, because he certainly realises he's doing it.

Anyway I'll research projective identification now. Thanks heaps.

Dirty Muriel (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck with your insane neighbor, Adam!

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, but it's not my neighbour. :)

Dirty Muriel (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

You are clearly in denial.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I call it "life"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps you could just call it behavioural echolalia without insight and possibly incorporating manic paranoid ideational features, together with some clear anal explosive characteristics which are causing projective identification features. Or maybe, hey, schizophrenia. Anyway, sorry to hear about it.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

it's some sort of crazy reverse Munchausens syndrome innit? I recommend throwing things at his house first.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Burn the fucker's house down.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"You burnt mine down first."

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this would be a thread about Marcello.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

it's called "your boss" i think

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Lying?

Although being convinced that someone is your enemy and is trying to stalk you, or imagining that someone is going out of their way to motivelessly make your life a misery can be a symptom of clinical narcissism. Provoking them into becoming your enemy could also be a part of that, but I'm not sure.

Projection

Bullies project their inadequacies, shortcomings, behaviours etc on to other people to avoid facing up to their inadequacy and doing something about it (learning about oneself can be painful), and to distract and divert attention away from themselves and their inadequacies. Projection is achieved through blame, criticism and allegation; once you realise this, every criticism, allegation etc that the bully makes about their target is actually an admission or revelation about themselves. This knowledge can be used to perceive the bully's own misdemeanours; for instance, when the allegations are of financial or sexual impropriety, it is likely that the bully has committed these acts; when the bully makes an allegation of abuse (such allegations tend to be vague and non-specific), it is likely to be the bully who has committed the abuse. When the bully makes allegations of, say, "cowardice" or "negative attitude" it is the bully who is a coward or has a negative attitude.

Projection it is.

cf. "malignant narcissism"

Very common among stalker types.

Projection : a glimpse of hell

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the name of that psychological condition where you accuse everyone critiquing your actions of "projection"?

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I think what we have here is clearly a projector projecting projection onto his neighbor.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"being a dick"

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, but clearly, by the laws of projection, it is YOU, sir, who are the dick.

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yes

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

But, by the same logic, I am also a dick.

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Projection it is.

Wow, so it is. Thank you so much [and to everyone else who called it projection too]. :)

Dirty Muriel (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

In fact, having just checked with the people whose neighbour is doing this shit, projection is exactly what it is. The neighbour even admitted to it being projection.

Dirty Muriel (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"4 GODS SAKE STOP ME B4 I PROJECT AGAIN"

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

How can you be sure there isn't counter-projection going on. Not to frighten you, Muriel, but could you have been doing it all along? In a fugue state? I mean, maybe your 'neighbour' doesn't even exist - except as a part of you!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

IT'S NOT MY NEIGHBOUR. GAH.

Dirty Muriel (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

*soothingly* I think we have just made a breakthrough.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread has taken my mind and blown it.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus was right: y'all shouldn't be throwing rocks at street hookers, now.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

how bout now?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

this rock if burning a frickin' hole in my hand, man.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)
