rice that's slightly off? (like, it's not quite mouldy but it looks "wetter" than before - it was left in the rice cooker for a day as i forgot to transfer it to the fridge)

I'll find out tomorrow i guess. It seemed more filling than usual so i could have ingested a lot of mould. is mould toxic?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh blimey. YES! Off rice can contain all sorts of horrors.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i've once left a bowl of rice somewhere and forgot about it (went on holiday and back) and i think I'd unwittingly produced sake! (i didn't drink it as it smelled like 83 pairs of used socks)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Idiot Ken. You'd probably be best off making yrself vomit before it starts fermenting away in yr stomach.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, I would have thought that you of all people would know that! But I suppose you might have a cast iron stomach, and be ok.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Rice is one of the first things they tell you about on a hygiene course. Never re-heat it...certainly don't eat the bad stuff. It contains something (I think) called clostidium perfidius. Which, loosely translated, means Several Days On The Toilet.

So, no, don't eat it. Have a pizza instead.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I know.. i've seen the terrors of old rice... although todays sample really didn't look horrendous (just slightly sweaty.. and still white!) I slapped some red hot curry on it and microwaved the whole thing for 10 minutes so hopefully that'll kill off any dodgy stuff!

The fermentation in stomach sounds rather neat actually!!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

World of Pain.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i've eaten it already ian!

although fried rice is always made with old rice, you know! (but normally just overnight, and you'd store it somewhere sensible like a fridge)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

You shouldn't reheat rice? Good lord, that's been half my diet for most of my life!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

and the joy of leftover curries for breakfast in the morning...........

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

According to my research (a brief scan of the 1st links in google) Rice may be reheated just fine.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine too! Reheated left over curry from the night before has been my staple post-pissup, hangover-curing diet forever.

xpost

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I am all about the several-day-old Thing!

I mean, there's a reason it's called Thing! Cause if you leave it for a few days, it looks like The Thing!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

haha funny that i do feel kinda like i'm a little drunk just now.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

haha did any of you guys ever play the mould game? like we all leave bits of bread/rice/cheese lying around and see who can grow the most horrendous looking mould?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of my ex's houemates once let a glass of milk go off over a period of some weeks. The results were, um, interestingly foul.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Humph! We didn't call that a game, we called that AN EXPERIMENT.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I called it dinner.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

This drunken feeling is kinda neat..

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You can get the same effect with beer.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I once left a half-empty pan of rice with the lid on and then forgot about it, going away for about five days. The smell of the pan when I took the lid off was one of the most foul things I've ever experienced.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

not at work i can't.. i'm kinda drunk and i can blame it on eating bad rice (might even be able to get half day off!)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Somehow despite the answer to the original question being no it's actually yes.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Cold curry for breakfast is da bomb. If you don't mind farting all day.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

that's why they call it da bomb.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

... it won't kill ya

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Thinking about this, we sold a lot of fried rice (cold, for reheating) when I worked on a deli at Safeway - but it was their hygiene course that said not to reheat rice.

Not sure what that was about, then.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

weird. i frequently reheat old rice. sometimes its in the fridge for up to a week and its totally fine, never had a problem. once i left rice out in the cooker for maybe 2-3 days and it was ok too. it was atually out for longer - maybe a week before i bothered throwing the rest out, but it didnt smell, it just got really dry.

AaronK (AaronK), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Bacillus cereus is the bug that'll get you from eating rice that hasn't been properly temperature controlled.

You can get both Diarrhoeal and Emetic toxins! Cereus stuff, Ken.

Mooro (Mooro), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

arrrrgh! :(

it's going to bacillus all!!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

so, i was fine pretty much the next few days.

yesterday was a bit of a payback time though. when the shit went down, i had better been ready!! (i was) but talk about RBM.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 22 August 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

At least you won't have AIDS

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Sunday, 22 August 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm confused by ken's spelling, and afraid that it may be provincial of me. 'Round here,

At least you won't have AIDS

why? Does the HIV virus get expelled by fluidic poo?

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 22 August 2004 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Humph! We didn't call that a game, we called that AN EXPERIMENT

yes, I have actually carried out an experiment along thse lines for genuine scientific reasons! The Milk Tank Experiment was designed to see how different levels of water pollution affect the single celled creatures in the water. It's done by having 4 fish tanks set up at different levels so they overflow into one another and pouring pints of milk into the top one each day. The top tank develops a foul, thick, brown crust on top and of course it stinks to high heaven.
