Sampled compilation: p-funk OR chic?

recently bought two double albums comprising 70-odd songs of "the originals",i.e. the songs recently sampled in proper pop tunes.

Is this grate or what? Alternatively is this a lousy stinkin' fake way of getting a shallow library of classic funk and disco without any of the hard work?

ah well, i DID mean to post this on ILM, but a) it's late 2) i'm a bit tipsy iv) they're WAY too rockist to treat the very idea with anyhting other than loathing and contempt. (Sample contribution: "hey that's shit -- by contributor-with-no-interest-in-the-thread-but-must-register-distaste"

is this thread title supposed to suggest the 'classic or dud' format? which is supposed to be dud? anyway rare groove comps are shit, i hate them. fuck you original breaks & beats for making my thrift store vinyl find worthless! reissues are for pussies.

I'd say it's acceptable if only to get familiar with the artists/genre. Good music = good music either way. However the pleasure of rare groove comps can never compare to finding the REAL THING... unearthing a battered copy of Curtis Mayfield's 'Super Fly' at the Salvation Army for a buck and finding the source of Beasties sample = ultra fucking classic.

I think they're an iffy idea. The good thing is they annoy certain types of collector while making some money for often deserving people. The bad thing - well, wasn't the original idea of hip-hop to loop the peak/best bits from otherwise indifferent records? So my experience has generally been that after you get past the "oh, that sample!" kick you find the songs a lot drabber than their unwitting progeny.

i'm with Ethan on this. i mean, i'm a pussy, and i own Ultimate Breaks & Beats comps, so, its gotta be true, right?

But actually it is a pretty good collection of stuff. there are some duffers in there (I could do without the Hall and Oates track for "say no go"), but not enough to make you think it's a waste of cash.

What's more it's a nice range of old stuff and it could get ver kids (sod that, ME) into some fab oldies.

Make *mine* a p-funk!

Tom, I'm not entirely in agreement with you here...

i'm with Turner on this one. eg Tyrone Thomas seven minutes of funk.

plus, many great records sampled but on rubbish or mediocre new records, or when you don't get much of it.

having said that, anyone who's sat through the entirety of Funky Drummer will find much to agree with in Toms argument.
