The Motorcycle Diaries - ¿Classic or Dud?

I saw it last night as part of the Edinburgh Film Festival and was really impressed, but today I'm not sure whether I was just dazzled by the scenery and Sr. Bernal. Sometimes I thought bits in the leper colony were getting close to over-sentimental, but generally I was quite moved. I want to see it again when it comes out properly, to make my mind up. Anyone seen it/looking forward to it/hating it already?

I thought it was marvellous - but it did feel like it slightly ran out of steam in the last twenty minutes or so. Amazing cinematography and some very funny lines though.

I haven't read the book yet. I've got a Spanish copy but I'm saving it for when I can read Spanish. How does it compare with the film? Which bits are in the book/which are made up etc?

Never read the book and have no interest in the whole "Che" student malarkey, but I think you could still enjoy the film without even necessarily knowing he's supposed to be Che Guavara...

bit of an x-post there...

I am quite interested in him.

The book is awful. Just some adolescent trying to get round Argentina without spending money. Clumsily written and shittier than shit.

I am imagining it now being like boring firstyears going on about how their gap year really opened their mind...

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 20 August 2004 14:56 (twenty years ago)

...mine did.

I am living the legacy of it TODAY!

I can't believe a film was made of this spanking shite. The back cover of my copy (of the book) says this was the trip that shaped his political views. Yeah, bollocks.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I think the film looks quite good. but I know nothing about che guevara.

three weeks pass...
I saw this yesterday, and enjoyed it a lot. The beautiful photography and great naturalistic performances made up for the odd bit of cheesiness.

I'm very dubious as to how much of it actually happened and how much was invented by Che to further his own legend. 'I swam the Amazon to get to a leper colony' sounds like exactly the kind of thing a revolutionary leader would make up about themselves.

well, i had never heard abt the book or film till 2 days ago.

a 14 year old friend mentioned the film as something she wanted to see and then i found it it is about Che and starring Gael Garcia Bernal!!! I'm excited.

fifteen years pass...

just saw this for the first time. a bit sentimental, but better than I was expecting. beautifully shot of course. I was actually struck by the medicine in the film — very realistic, and as a young, idealistic physician myself I was impressed by ernesto’s manner and compassion. I assume there were a couple of embellishments: the swim across the river seemed unnecessary
