I found a digital camera in the woods [not for 56k]

Last week I drove to a nearby town. The town is surrounded by tall hills and mountains, and you can have a very pleasant hike down any of the numerous trails there. Anyway, I was climbing one trail and enjoying the good weather when I saw what looked like a silver box. When I approached, I saw it was a digital camera!

It's a 3.3 mpixel powershot S20! Slightly scuffed, but otherwise fine. It rained the next day, so I was really lucky to get there when I did. When I got home, I also saw it had a 300mb hard drive inside! I pity the fool who dropped it so carelessly. Anyway, just wanted to share. It also had some nice pictures on it, so I thought I'd share them.

nice pics! though maybe you should, like, put up some found signs near where you found it.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 21 August 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

holy crap, those photos look like someone from Blair Witch was taking them and running from whatever it is that's out there. they start off peaceful and end up blurrier and off axis. freaky

JaXoN (JasonD), Saturday, 21 August 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, god, I'd be heartsick if I lost my camera like that - especially one loaded with images.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 21 August 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Err yeah - shouldn't you hand it in to the local police station, or am I hopelessly old-fashioned?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 21 August 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

not old fashioned, just ethical.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 21 August 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the previous owner has already been overcome by

THE FOG

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 21 August 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, I want to know where that is so I can film a digital horror film there and scare those pussies on the new "horror films are scary" thread shitless.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 21 August 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose the wandering undead of the woods *wouldn't* have so much use for a digital camera. I mean, unless they were on vacation.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 21 August 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

vacation from hell!

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 21 August 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Look at those photos a little more closely guys...

(GBS/SA REPRESENT!)

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Sunday, 22 August 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa, pic#25 is the creepiest thing

chrisco (chrisco), Sunday, 22 August 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

mdb, Sunday, 22 August 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Joseph Pot (STINKOR™), Sunday, 22 August 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

we are being duped by a marketing person or hoax pertpetrator, dudes.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 22 August 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

what is GBS/SA?

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 22 August 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really understand what is so creepy, but nonetheless I just got a chill down my spine. Hmm...

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't this the same image server that the gaping anal porn used to be on?

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just realised why I'm scared - I've got earmuffs on.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Awesome photos, I don't care how rigged they are.

Alba: Look for shadowy figures in shots 5, 18, 25.

Sexual Air Supply (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 22 August 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I mean I've seen the shadowy figures. They're not very shadowy though. They're just some bloke in the fog.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks to me like 5 and 18 were added later. The outline's too sharp.

Sexual Air Supply (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 22 August 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

haha 18 is CREEPY

Jesus those are some creepy ass photos!!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Sunday, 22 August 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

there's also someone in the lower right window of #17. but yeah, cool pictures aside, the marketing stunt is silly.

Joseph Pot (STINKOR™), Sunday, 22 August 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

what are they marketing though?

Oh and for maximum effect, play Treefingers/Optimistic/In Limbo whilst looking at the above pictures.

Oh and Pinefox missed one, which is perhaps the most atmospheric and accomplished of the lot:

Jesus! This site's seriously screwy today.

not PF, btw.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The idea of the pinefox being behind this is almost too horrifying to comtemplate.

Sigh.

Can I start again?

Sexual Air Supply (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 22 August 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently the location of the pics is Woodstock, NY

this is obviously a hoax, but i admire whoever's behind it.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 22 August 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, my dad has a friend who lives in the woods there. Perhaps he is a zombie now.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

dick van dyke is behind this.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 22 August 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

A guy on the SomethingAwful forums took these and fucked with 'em before posting it on their General Bullshit Forum. The jig lasted all of five minutes.

There's a bunch of creatures from Doom 3, a couple from an old kid's storybook and the predator worked into them.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Sunday, 22 August 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not a marketing thing. Just a kid with a camera and a lot of time.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Sunday, 22 August 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I hug the person who did this.

Harold Media (kenan), Sunday, 22 August 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello Chums,

Someone posted it to http://www.ilxor.com , where they all took it far too seriously.

Fond Regards,

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Sunday, 22 August 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

there are a least a handful of SA goons around ILX...

plus, the photos look like they were taken from the Science Base section from Far Cry...

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Sunday, 22 August 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

your addition makes no sense, at all, though.

I'll stop, soon.

in all my years...

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

the other unfun thing about Far Cry is that when you cap one of the trigen monkeys, they're heads don't disappear in a fountaining geyser of blood, like when you get a sniper headshot on a badguy.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Sunday, 22 August 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

oddly enough, earlier today I was re-reading that Dating Game bit on SA and was laughing my ass off just like when I first read it.

I particularly like the pics of the ruined building.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anybody know what kind of building it was?

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Pentagrams drawn in blood (or Pantone 1665 :-)) on the walls in #16 - one in centre and one above steps.
Slightly right of centre it might possibly say BS on the wall.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i knew Belle and Sebastian fans would be behind this act of pure evil.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

where did these pictures originate, though? w/out the lurking figures, they're still pretty cool

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, I want to know where that is so I can film a digital horror film there and scare those pussies on the new "horror films are scary" thread shitless.

WELL I NEVER!!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 22 August 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like it when people on other internet boards talk about ILX

It makes me think of Grange Hill, and the opaquely-known world of the other school down the road, that was sometumes involved in storylines.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It is totally a guy doing robotic dancing in picture 5.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 22 August 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

See now, this would have been a much better and scarier (if more expensive) prank if someone loaded up their digital camera with these altered pics and really did leave it lying out near a hiking trail where someone would find it. Y'know.. smear a little blood and zombie dust on it first of course... and then watch the papers.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 22 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It would have been even better and scarier than that if they loaded it up with unaltered pictures, of actual zombies and murders. This is probably impractical, though.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Impractical yeah, zombies are notoriously photogenic and never appear at all scary in pictures.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 22 August 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Zombies as a rule aren't very pratical, being the living dead ain't no fun.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 22 August 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Poor zombies. Their plight is almost reminiscent of Britney's "Lucky" narrative... coincidence?

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 22 August 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

They remind me of the Gary Hill video installation where he's got video cameras attached to his feet and hands and walking around a bombed out building like that one.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Sunday, 22 August 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)
