Double FAP Joy: Pete's Birthday twosome...

Well it’s like this. I am about to be 31. There are two ways of looking at this. Age, ever marching onwards, leaves this as a cause for concern and a time for commiserations with a few friends. Or a time for celebration, you’re only 31 once, and prime birthdays don’t come round all that often.

Two, I think. 3-1 = 2. 3+1 = 4 which is 2 squared. The number two keeps coming into the equation.

Not only this but thinking about the dual nature of things keeps making me think – why not have two parties.

And my birthday is on a Monday, and loads of people never go out on a Monday.

So – I have decided to have two parties for my birthday to celebrate this dual nature. You may come to one, t’other or BOTH*
SUNDAY 5th SEPTEMBER – 4pm – Closing (10:30ish I guess)
THE ALBANY: Great Portland Street Tube.

A nice venue with some interesting beers (home of the Heavenly Social way back when before a brief period as a Firkin pub). A venue to show off the lighter side of my personality, Belgian beers, some nice ales and food I daresay at overpriced prices.

http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/show.shtml/1099/Albany/Great_Portland_Street

MONDAY 6th SEPTEMBER – 6:30pm – Closing (11-ish I guess)
THE GLASSHOUSE STORES – Brewer Street

Start my 31st year the way I have gone on before, darkness, grubby pubby nonsense. There will be a bar billiards competition, there will be the same old selection of Sam Smith’s ale and there will be the usual attempt to take over all of the downstairs. I will also have had the auditors in all day and contractors fixing the new AV stuff in so will be drained somewhat by all that non-birthday activity so come give cheer.

http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/show.shtml/3372/Glasshouse_Stores/Piccadilly_Circus

Love to see you all, pass on to any I have forgotten (none hopes me) and for gift suggestions (main suggestion is YES) see a wish list here

(There will be no singing of Carter songs this year).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the idea of people only going to one or the other - it'd be a battle. somehow we must top last year's SOAS do which was beautiful really.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

will there be dancing at the Albany?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe...

(Um, not planned but who knows what will happen yet).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

SUNDAY CREW REPRESENT

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

YOUNG PETER I BESTOW BLESSINGS UPON THY RIGHTEOUS SHINDIG

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

damn! House and pet sitting that whole week, have a good time!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I have just realised I will be on holiday for both of these events. Bugger.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I see no reason that I can't attend both of these, except my depression problems, so don't count on me, as if you would.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Monday for me.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

lovely lovely both :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, the Albany's literally like a hop, skip, and jump from my new place. I just might pay a visit.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I can do both I think, but I reckon a big one on Sunday would probably put paid to the following day's festivities.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Probs both but definitely Sunday - will be sans boy as he will be on a poxy stag do in Exeter so will be cheering myself up with booze :( but also celebrating the Pete's magnificent aging, of course.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you'll find we're both in Manchesterville, Liz. Although we'll be back in London in time for the Glasshouse event.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw pish, I'm confused with dates again. Will I have to go to the pub after throwing you on a train then? Definite grumpiness will ensue.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely sunday. i am paying big bucks for lunch on the tuesday, so i can't get a hangover from monday night - but if i'm feeling strong-willed, i'll do monday night too.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

As it's central I'm sort of tempted to do the last train home and be dead at work the next day.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

sunday sounds like he plan

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone after the she plan come on Monday then.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

A modern etiquette question: Hey Pete, if I am buying you something from your wishlist, but I'm getting it elsewhere because it's cheaper, should I announce what I am buying so that no one else buys it as well?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm currently planning to come to both of these, all being well, having been told by a manager yesterday to take more holiday!

2 questions:

I don't actually see a list. where is it?

does the asterisk next to BOTH refer to anything?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

go to Amazon and search wishlists for Peter B@r@n.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

bump.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

For a moment a minute ago I panicked, thinking that these were this weekend and that I missed both FAPs.

Thank god.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 30 August 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh dear... which? both? Oh, too much of a muchness, I wish I had two livers!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I can make one or both of these.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I still can't parse what exactly is being proposed here, though.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and I still don't get to meet jel!

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, the picture's getting clearer now, never mind.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know you were to be in the country, Adam!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes I am!

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The asterisk was a special prize for people who come to both. This may or may not still be happening since I have only just got back from Spain and organising is not necessarily my forte.

Oh lookee here. This has bumped up to the top again. Who'dathunk?

And yes, buying off wishlist is fine (andything is fine). I got two pestles and mortars last year, one for indian and one for other foods now, what makes me look like a sophisticat.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Make yr bleedin' mind up mate. Robster & I aren't going to have internet access between this afternoon and Monday, so if you're cancelling it'd be nice to know. Also if you are you won't get pints bought for you.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

moving house on Sunday so doubtful for the Albany but will try and make it

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Pete meant the prize might not be happening, not that I can read his mind or anyfink.

I'm going to both. Make up for my recent FApscence.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know which I'm going to! Monday night actually looks more realistic, as I'll be at work and therefore in town anyway, plus I don't have to work the day after. (Plus the weekend drinking looks fairly heavy right now and I might need Sunday to recover.)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevem you managed to make Felicity's Calthorpe FAP after moving house last year. That's no excuse!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah right. Marvellous, see you chaps Monday.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

YES BOTH ARE STILL ON. PRIZE MAY BE CRAYON DRAWINGS SO ROB AND LIZ NEED NOT WORRY TOO MUCH.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw. A repeat portrait would be lovely. Mmmmmm crayons.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry for shouting. My ears haven't popped yet.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 3 September 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll probably come on monday, although i'm playing this weekend by ear, so maybe will come on sunday as well. woo!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't make Monday, Sunday possible

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll still good for Sunday.

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 3 September 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I will probably come on Sunday.

adam. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 4 September 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

see you sunday!

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 4 September 2004 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

probably won't be able to make tomorrow, maybe not even monday - if I'm not able to, apologies to pete.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 4 September 2004 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm.

cake?

cis (cis), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

50% of Afro-Caribbean males in the UK have white partners, am i right in assuming this is considerably higher than in the US?

Dadaismus (Dada), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

wrong thread!!!!!!!!

Dadaismus (Dada), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

oof, tonight's going to be tricky, bad ruin

Porkpie (porkpie), Sunday, 5 September 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

you're telling me.

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 5 September 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just got out of bed. I think that says much about the level of ruin I am currently experiencing. See you in the pub.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 5 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

god i was tired last night. sorry for my inability to hold a conversation, i'll try to drop by for a pint later to make up for it.

also, happy birthday pete!

toby (tsg20), Monday, 6 September 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry I didn't make it last night. I was depressed hung over as hell, and I think my brain was just destroyed by the gravitational fields of the black hole on my shoulder. (You think I'm kidding, don't you?)

I will come along for a bit after work today but I have to leave early as there's a new history programme on the telly that I want to watch. Yes, I know that's pathetic.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm planning on coming tonight as well-- will anyone be there early? i've got a thingy about 4:30 at old street, and think i'll be done by 5:30. could hang around there for a while, i guess, but if people will be at the pub early, i'll plan to go straight there.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to leave work at about 5.30 and it takes about 45 minutes to walk there. So I won't be there superearly, but I will try to be there early as I'm planning on leaving early.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm trying to get a HAIRCUT today (omg!) cos i tried to go yesterday but the hairdressers were closed. (stupid stupid UK sundays.) so if i can't get a lunchtime thing i might have to go after work and will probably be well late. i hope to make it though.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that, even in the era of bierkrieg, good sense must occasionally prevail. I think after this weekend's mentalism I'll give this one a miss - have a good one though.

(Oh, and happy birthday Barang.)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you for everyone who came yesterday. I did not get too ruined and am in chipper for the auditor and the contractors. I hope to be at pub about 6:30, maybe earlier but got to see what time they all want to work to today. But cheers yesterday, and cheers for today.

Huzzah!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Huzzay! I shall arrive at the Glasshouse Stores contemporaneously, boots polished and elbow greased; for tonight I reconnoiter with that old leviathan, that cut-purse Skidmore, in a spheroid competition whose title to me nature hath importuned; but which serendipity hath thus far show'd nowt but graceless visage. I shall be twirling my waxed moustache with a blithe contempt, for tonight, I suspect, that table is my bailiwick.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Monday, 6 September 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry i couldn't make last night, see you this night

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 6 September 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm afraid I'm not certain whether I'll be able to get there, Tracer. I didn't manage to go to work today, and I'm not sure whether I'll be capable of getting out. Forgetting to take Pete's present with me yesterday is a good incentive, so you never know.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 6 September 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

My resolve has crumbled in the face of rub day at work and lack of hangover this morning. See you in the pub.

I'm going home first though to save on money and ruin.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit - I couldn't make it yesterday and now it looks like I might miss out tonight as well, since a friend is in town from Toronto and we are trying to meet up. If we wind up planning tomorrow, I'll see y'all later! If not, sorry Pete - and HAPPY WOMB-EXITING DAY!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be there for an hour or two at the beginning, then home to cook.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Toby from what I hear it is safer for you to be in the pub than at home wrt impending ruin.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I have had the most annoying financial numbercrunch day at work EVAH!!! SO I need beer (but not too much because the accountant is in tomorrow too. Ugh!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

What we did a year ago today.

One of the greatest FAPs ever, to this day. Aaah, happy times.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

are these not happy times now?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i had beef pie for lunch with shallots and red wine jus, followed by apple crumble and custard. now that's happy times.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I doubt we will reach those heights tonight. on a Monday. But, but, but...

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 September 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be handing out lyric sheets to "Sheriff Fatman" at the door of the GHS, if anyone's interested.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 September 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't get one?! I did mistake your Denver Nuggets shirt for Utah Jazz paraphernalia, which is almost as bad a move as Kate not knowing the crab-pincer "talkin a lot of shit" hand motion in the losing-all-traces-of-Americanness stakes.

Pete, cis, Carsmile, pinefox, Sarah, Matt DC, Super-Masonic Black Hole, colette, david acid, Liz, Vicky (who I saw only passing quickly out the door), Tim, guy talking to Tim with the thing on his arm, William Bloody Swygart, ken c, stevem, and the magisterial Martin Skidmore who handed me my ass on a platter in a very lopsided game of bar billiards, where I believe I periodically bumped into the scoring markers "by accident," in order to purchase by deceit what could not be won outright. No doubt I've forgotten important folks but it's weird, you know, these things. One pleasant young lady whose name escapes me, for instance. Anyway I'm fairly ruined and we didn't even go to Spain in the end.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Monday, 6 September 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i tried to get folks to go to las vegas instead but no joy there either.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

beerkrieg is in full effect, tonight's entertainment:

HB P!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks everyone for coming last night and all my lovely presents. Yahboo sucks for Mobile Streams and their downstairs action. Today I have mostly been doing a VAT audit. Boo.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot alix!! and MarkH! and others probably o no

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

and me, well I was passing out the door too with Vicky

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay this was fun! Looking good, Pete!

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

did you ever pot that ball Sarah?

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! I potted the ball in the end with my SUPERIOR BAR BILLIARDS SKILLS. You watch out Cabbage, I'm a demon with a cue...

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

trying one too many massé shots was my downfall in that bar billiards.......

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

are those the ones with Sambuca?

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Playing all those ILM canon shots was not advisable

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I kept bouncing off the cushion after those sambuca shots

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I'm reading Starry's post as a complex innuendo and getting very confused.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

To the Pinefox - I apologise for droning on about theory in literature and Terry Eagleton vs Zizek.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It's only 'vs' for me, not you?

the bellefox, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It's only 'vs' for me, not you?

Also, I liked your final comments on places to live, eg. Blackheath, Sidmouth, Manchester, etc.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw some engravings of blackheath, recently.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry I didn't make either of these - Sunday I got caught up visiting a friend and Monday was the night before I flew out to Barcelona! I might still be around this weekend (leave Monday), but I'm still frantically busy. :(

And (belated) happy birthday to Pete.
