D’you know, it was back in 1958 that’s 1979 in old money in PRE-DECIMAL CURRENCY we went to see Garland Judy at the old Chelsea Picture Palace Theatre what is now Habitat but formerly grand old theatre of yore and it was not just Judy it was a variety bill very varied variety bill indeed it was. You had Vince Catford comedian standing up but very modern-style mind you very near the knuckle ooh it was blue especially about mothers-in-law oo he didn’t half give them a bashing but very up to the moment minute in 1958 and you got in for half a florin none of this credit my card type how-do-you-do no you went in there got your fizzy cherryade and a very nice programme it was in Geoffrey’s museum it is now exemplar of said programme schedule. Anyhow then there was Bert Weedon now he is king of the guitars I don’t know why people go on about Hendricks Jimmy I mean he set fire to his teeth and so forth but you never heard him play “Tavern in the Town,” my it was grand. And “Jive Shuffle Boogie Woogie Guitar Magic” that is the king of all rocks to rolling I said to Pepe as was in full agreement. And then you had acrobatic magicians flying trapeze in pyramid formation while producing rabbits out of pieces of paper hats wine glasses my it was astounding astonishing. And then before you knew it it was top of the bill star turn Miss Garland Judy she sang all hits like “Get Happy In A Trunk” my it took me back to days of time of war as was former Navy man. And we were billeted ooh it were 1941 that’s £50 in old years currency modern style and we were given exclusive privilege of queuing up all 500 of us to see Betty Davies glamorous film lady of note of yore and all sailors got chance to take autophotograph perched on knee and there was a hubbub a right royal to-do I can tell you when seven of us got mixed up the queue was mixed up in a jumble you see and we all descended atop Bette Davy’s patella simultaneously and she squealed oh my lord you could have heard her in the Far East in those days that would be Whitechapel. But grand nostalgia of yore Chick Snakehips Bowlly Hylton Goodman. He was a right one. Anyway after end of grand variety bill at Picture Habitat Palace Cinema Chelsea Theatre we went backstage to attempt to get autograph of top star celebrated celebrity Miss Garland Judy but unfortunately she had passed out on lino comatose subsequent to sipping of juice lemon. So we were disappointed in such respects but were compensated by obtaining fine autograph of upcoming beat singer Terry Camden. Ooh did he get the girls rocking in the aisles very nice-looking man very personable wouldn’t have minded anyway he prevails he survives now stacking shelves in Waitrose Ealing Broadway but still looking very personable mark you mark my words and in health fettle’s fine and was able to provide autograph unlike Garland Judy who is dead decease and therefore unable to sign autograph at present.

Lordy, what larks we 'ad dahn the Brick Lane and no mistake, the tables for the street party were set up something scrumptious. Jellied eels just like me mum used to pull from the barnacly brine. Me Dad and Uncle fred were there and we would all get around the joanna and sing, sing, sing. What larks? Only for a bunch of grapes and a threepenny bit. We used to make our own entertainment.
