op-shopping?

Turner, op-shops = opportunity shops, salvation army shops. I am no good at this kind of shopping, I never find anything good and the clothes smell like other people, strangers, which makes me feel icky.

Stripey wool hipster trousers from late '60s in mint condition, £1.

i hate suzy and di because a) they are GRATE at picking up bargains which i am not (too impatient) and b)because they are obviously rail- thin enough to wear vintage clothes, which as we all know are about 4 sizes smaller than they are now. oh, i don't hate you. well done! :) i'm just gonna get me a sewing machine and make my OWN clothes, see if i don't!

katie, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

actually, i am not rail-thin. i hover somewhere between a size 12 and 14 (NZ sizes). opshops must be different overseas, cos most of the stuff i wanna buy here is either in my size exactly or too big, never too small.

i hate you katie cos you can sew!

my op-shopping existence would be perfect if only i could sew. then i could adjust all the lovely clothes in opshops that are too big for me.

i can't sew! i gotta learn! oh it's gonna be FUN! :)

men's clothes in charity shops are usually crap. i do miss charity shops though, now i'm money rich / time poor, or whatever. i got some great black trousers once for 1.50 and some nice shirts over the years. however the best stuff is either picked out for the Oxfam vintage clothes shops (as if Oxfam wasn't expensive enough) or by second hand clothes shops. those shops are pricier, but at least you don't have to rummage through the rubbish.

books are a much better bet in the UK, and the occassional record

Ooh, I've bought tons of records. If they're only 40p, it's worth taking a chance on something that has a funny cover. My best ones are Yes Sir, I Can Boogie by Baccara from Cancer Research(I think) in Wood Green and Native New Yorker by Odyssey from Scope in Woking. I find charity shops in posh areas tend to yield the nicest clothes and sometimes the old dear behind the counter is completely clueless as to how much she should be charging for that lovely duffle coat, but you know how much it would cost to buy from one of London's trendy markets, so you snaffle it for two pounds. Yay!
