sovereignists in america

How likely is it that within the next century canada and the usa will break down like it was the case for ussr?

here's a map showing potential sovereign states in america
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ontario_independence/na.htm

links hinting that this scenario is likely:

Alaska: http://www.akip.org
vermont : http://www.vermontsovereignty.com/
southern states : http://www.dixienet.org
new-england: http://members.aol.com/pauleno/index.htm
Ontario: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ontario_independence/
Cascadia (C-B, Washington and Oregon): http://zapatopi.net/cascadia.html
Alberta: http://www.republicofalberta.com
B-C: http://bc2009separatists.com/
west can : http://www.westcan.org/

An argument for the unlikeliness of this scenario could be that a sovereign state needs a population and an economy similar to the best administered countries of the world where the quality of life is the highest, so in that sense right now the only nations that would have a chance of becoming sovereign would be
1. Québec
2. scotland
3. Catalonia
4. Basque Country
5. Chechnya

what says u ?

Anyone speaks Cascadese (like, a dialect of English)?

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Sunday, 29 August 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Aren't all these people green-ink kooks and obsessives?

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 29 August 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

If you are right that would make about 3.7 millions green-ink kooks and obsessives only in Québec, my personal feeling is that this number is slightly too big so I think it's unreasonable to say that all these people are like that.

postcolonial studies to thread please, it could be helpful to explain the emergence and growth of separatist movements.

"Within the european union , you can cross most borders without being checked and the euro makes it easier to shop around for bargains."
Independent states of americas could make such an union to avoid hassling their citizens.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Sunday, 29 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Western Canada should definitely separate, but after I leave obviously, I mean who'd want to fuckin' live there

dave q, Sunday, 29 August 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I know that some parts of western Kansas tried to secede a few years ago. They've had bullying from those Topeka silk-hat wearers!

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 29 August 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If Texas goes, we're taking chunks of Colorado, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Wyoming with us. 1836 borders, baby.

two months pass...
Over the next century? Maybe - anything could happen. Personally I'd be surprised if anyone is alive in a century.

As Kevin points out, a century is a lo-o-o-ong time.

Because of the USA Civil War, I'd say secession of states from the USA is not a very likely option unless the central government has pretty much devolved into chaos. Not out of the question, but still not the most likely scenario. Canada, OTOH, is a bit less likely to kill any secessionists, in my opinion.

Personally I'd be surprised if anyone is alive in a century.

born again ppl think something like that too, that might explain why they don't really care about environment: the apocalypse will destroy everythning in the end or whatever!

ps I wanted to say pissing on the biblebeltand it happened that I ran out of beers thank you for your attention to my pleasure

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 4 November 2004 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but I'm quite Quixotic about it. I don't think it's inevitable, so I'll do what I can to make sure I'm wrong. Some evangelicals who believe similar things think the death of civilisation\humanity would be a good thing. I don't.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 4 November 2004 02:38 (twenty years ago)

I aim to please.

and to offend.

but usually they go hand in hand, and I don't care about the people I'd be offending.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Thursday, 4 November 2004 02:40 (twenty years ago)

Trigonalmayhem, who are you?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 4 November 2004 02:42 (twenty years ago)

Some evangelicals who believe similar things think the death of civilisation\humanity would be a good thing.

they haven't invented that: ancient cynics thought that too; they hated Prometheus who stole fire for humanity and allowed the birth of civilization. to restore cynicism is possible and I invite people to look into this thought ; to make it so involves to be as subborn and rational as they were; the time is different so it must compose with it, personally that's why I care about postmodern medicine: stem cell research, bioengineering, nanomedicine etc

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 4 November 2004 02:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually new.

I'm a friend of one Jon Williams, you might know him?

I'd say secession of states from the USA is not a very likely option unless the central government has pretty much devolved into chaos. Not out of the question, but still not the most likely scenario.

We're twenty years on from this statement and the likelihood of such chaos has definitely stepped up a few notches already.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Friday, 31 January 2025 20:47 (eight months ago)
