Kids these days...

Inspired by the 'have-a-go-cowards' thread - what the FUCK is the matter with today's youth? They all seem to be violent criminals, or just surly thugs. They always blame 'boredom', too - when it's probably a lack of discipline! What's going on?

Also, is 'shame at not having the latest phone technology' a valid excuse for mugging people?

dave q, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no, but "eminem told me to" is.

di, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi Dave, depending how old you are there is an explanation for why the kids are the way they are today. Kids today on the whole are brought up with no respect for anyone or anything. They are taught from the beginning that you don't have to pay heed to anyone. You don't HAVE to do a thing if you don't want to. If you ask a kid today to clean their room for example, they say No it's my room and it will stay like this if I want it to! There seems to be no order to their lives at all. Then again too, many parents work and the kids bring themselves up. :( Gale

That explains Dave Q Gale, but what about the kids today?

Pete, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think their parents don't smack them enough...

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Especially in Scotland.

Emma, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh these young scamps today they have no respect for their elders ergo betters. D'you I once volunteered with SALUTE tried my luck at being a Guardian Angel very nice beret rather tight T-shirt mind you it don't half freeze you at Queens Park at quarter to the mid. And anyway these scamps youth they were making a right royal commotion so I stood up to them strong and stalwart and said "Now then, you raucous rapscallions! Have a care, you woebegone ne'er-do-wells, lest your ears be boxed faster than a Golden Jubilee commemorative ashtray!" D'you know I only had 286 stitches so must have made some sort of an impression. But would never do it again as agree with Emma nice young cake lady Emma who say that kids today do not get enough smack.

Detonate errant youths!

Wally Klemmer, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

all the radiation from mobile phones has rotted their gentials off, so theyhave to get fucked somewhere else.

Geoff, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I truly don't understand why parents want kids to clean their rooms. Nobody has to come in if it's that awful. And if this tendency to messiness is not resisted, the kids will eventually want a change of style, become minimalists, and keep their rooms obsessively clean because they want complete Zenlike emptiness. (At least in my experience.)

That said, yes, I'm a thug. When I get bored I slide around my floor while listening to the Kinks.

Maria, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's my room and I'll clean it when I want mum you bitch you, pass me that joint or I'll smack you. You know I'll just smoke it with the lads when you go off to work anyway, you better be home to cook my fuckin dinner ok? But not too early cos I have to have casual sex with some slapper I'll meet down at the pool hall ok? Nothing else to do.

Ronan, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Evidently.

seven years pass...

I googled my sister's kid and she is like, going on tour playing indie pop songs on the ukelele, giving props to Darnielle on phone interviews, talking about the Gorilla Biscuits and American Hardcore. I'm like aren't you supposed to be being a baby and watching Veggie Tales or something

I disagree with Erin O'Neill, whose column made me ashamed of people my age (well, five years younger) repping for that.

Both of the golden generations before us had the cold war and the A-bomb, lady, get your head out of your own ass.

"And this, I believe, is what we are most jealous of: that there was ever faith that the United States could rise above its current condition and live up to its ideals. And not just America, that we ourselves could be better. Sure, we got Barack Obama elected, but the president (even the first black president) is a symbol, not a movement of epic proportions that fundamentally changes the fabric of the county."

Don’t get me wrong; the Internet is awesome: It’s practically made libraries go the way of outhouses.

velko, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 19:55 (sixteen years ago)

Not that the '60s were all that great. The rampant sexism and racism must’ve been awful. The draft and thousands of Americans dying in Vietnam stunk.

hmmm

peter in montreal, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 19:55 (sixteen years ago)

outhouses are more awesome than the internet btw

"This week, the third season premiere of "Mad Men," a cult TV hit about an advertising agency in this illustrious decade, coincided with the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival. The virtual second coming of the Beatles in the form of a video game will be arriving in early September."

I wonder if she knows people older than her buy and watch things.

They say that America was naive in the '60s, like it’s a good thing.

Also who the fuck has ever said this

god bless this -ation (Abbott), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

It's not some kind of cultural meme I don't think

god bless this -ation (Abbott), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

omg the first site on a google search trying to claim people were naive in the '60s is from st0rmfr0nt

I have always hated when anyone of any generation tries to voice the entire generation's views.

this dumb bitch might benefit from turning off Mad Men and putting down Rock Band and getting to the library and reading some fucking history books

xxp Unfortunately, I think that's pretty much the bread and butter of most student newspapers' opinion columns.
