So far in the early going Finland has pounded the Czechs, Sweden beat Germany and Canada got by the U.S. in a close one. A lot of good teams here but Canada is still the country to beat.

damn right we are

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(I usually refrain from such hockey jingoism, but I couldn't help myself there)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the 96 finals may have been the greatest hockey ever played.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

International hockey tournaments provide our only opportunity to be jingoistic, indulge yourself.

Thinking about the '96 finals still drives me crazy. It's one thing to be outplayed, but I hate when a hot goalie does it all by himself. (also see '98 Olympic Semis vs. Czech Republic)

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

This whole tourniment sticks. It in now way makes up for the lack of NHL this winter.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone else a bit disappointed that this tournament is being played under NHL rules and not international rules? Meaning that hooking, grabbing and liberally crashing into goaltenders are not just permitted but encouraged? I was looking forward to the kind of fast-paced game we got to see at the last Winter Olympics.

CBC announcers were also saying that in case of a tie, they play 4-on-4 for 5 minutes just like the regular season, complete with that bullshit loser-still-gets-a-point rule.

alex in montreal, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

So, this is Ice Hockey then?

___ (___), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of hot goaltenders, that canada-usa game should have been 4-0 after the first if not for robert esche. that save he made on iginla (tremendous pass by sakic) was absurd.

usa = too old, too small, too shallow, and not fast enough to make up for it (a few years ago they might have been). canada = ugly ass sweaters.

i'd like to see the big ice too. i've heard that slovakia has a pretty good team that might be screwed by playing on the smaller north american rinks in the round robin, but i guess we'll see tonight...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah for nonpansy rules. Goalies should be fair target out of the crease.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

no doubt. i just like the idea of can-rules international hockey.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll joyfuly settle for a slower game if it means a few Americans and Swedes got caught looking down on the railway tracks.
Not that I'll degrade myself by watching this world cup of crapassness.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

well mr noodles, i hope you degraded yourself enough to watch the canada-czech game tonight, because that was one of the better hockey games i've ever seen. and canada is lucky to have survived it.

How did I miss this thread? :(

the 96 finals may have been the greatest hockey ever played.

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Sunday, 12 September 2004 06:17 (twenty-one years ago)

well, it was the greatest hockey ever played by mike richter...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 12 September 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

because that was one of the better hockey games i've ever seen.

If I had only seen the Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques & Hartford Whalers play I might agree. But six soft goals does not a good hockey game make.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 12 September 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

well, it was the greatest hockey ever played by mike richter...

*laughs hysterically again*

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Sunday, 12 September 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Hopefully Brodeur will be back on Tuesday. I think he probably will be. Canada/Finland should be great, with less soft goals. After that we'll be all set for an exciting lockout...

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Sunday, 12 September 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

96 finals were not good? i mus tnot know hockey then. i am embarrassed.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 12 September 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Best hockey series ever may yet be the 76 Canada Cup.

Best hockey by Richer was the 94 playoffs where he got jobbed by Brian Leetch for the CS.

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Sunday, 12 September 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I was really pulling for the Canucks to beat the Rangers in '94. "Nineteen-FORTY" was the best taunt in professional sports.

I wasn't alive yet for the'76 Canada Cup, and while the '87 Canada Cup might not make everyone's best tournament list, it's probably my favourite.

The '96 World Cup was definitely some of Richter's best hockey. Without him, the Yanks would have been toast. Me and my friends used to use "Richter" as a verb at times when you would completely outplay a team but get beat by a hot goalie.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 13 September 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Congratulations to Team Canada for winning, but I wish I was a little more excited. This impending lockout has got me really depressed. What the hell are we gonna do with no hockey this winter?

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

curling, man¡

dysøn (dyson), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"curling, man¡ "

I hope it never comes to that, but come February if there's still no NHL to watch, who knows what might happen.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Congrats be to Canada! Bye, bye NHL :(

Reed Moore (diamond), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry but how come there's no NHL?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

What the hell are we gonna do with no hockey this winter?

Go to the bars on Saturday/Sunday at 10:00 and watch football. 10:00 am.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

nothing like early sunday morning 'soccer'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the second finnish goal last night (ruutu?) was awesome.
