I've heard via a number of sources -- Indymedia, free103point9, etc. -- that the conditions at Pier 57, where many of the arrested protesters are being held, are nothing short of horrific. Lots of tales of sleeping in old pools of motor oil and transmission fluid (the "jail" is an old MTA bus depot), overtight plastic handcuffs that raise the possibility of blood clots, etc., handcuffed protesters being struck by the cops, etc. Doubtless there's some exaggeration going on, but if even a quarter of what I've heard is true it's bad news indeed.

yeah I've heard about people getting chemical burns from being detained in that place. Freakin' scary.

wow i'm glad "die in at 33rd and broadway" was a typo of some sort

jones (actual), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 15:14 (twenty years ago) link

i don't think it was. people have been doing die-ins all week - you lie down and pretend to be a corpse.

I think the most telling story I've heard from this whole experience is how, on Sunday during the UPJ march, the NYPD arrested the Daily News photographer who had spent 8 days confined by Saddam in Abu Ghraib before the war.

I wrote a little about my experiences participating in Critical Mass on Friday and the giant UFPJ march on Sunday here (scroll down if you want past the big apologia) (also there's not like any big revelations or anything, I didn't get arrested or see anyone getting beaten, it's just a quick sketch of what I saw and did).

oh! title-wise this seems flip to me but that's the multitude for you i guess

speaking of which are there any photos of the 'orange netting' they're supposedly using for mass arrests? this sounds infuriating but also funny

go to nyc.indymedia.org and look at the articles posted on the ride side, lots of them have pictures. here's a shot of the police getting ready to unroll it: http://images.indymedia.org/imc/nyc/image/13/large/102_0243.JPG

whoa, this is kinda fucked:

11:25 AM - We are also getting reports from UCIMC reporters that there are a large number of protesters being held that have not been officially arrested (or even charged with anything) being held. These detainees may not be accounted for in mainstream media arrest numbers.

11:21 AM - UCIMC reporter who phoned in from the detention center mentioned that roughly 2000 other people are being kept at the pier 57 in razor-wire surrounded pens.

Gitmo on the Hudson, indeed.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 15:48 (twenty years ago) link

Indymedia has done a really great job with that breaking news box all week. Much of what they are reporting is showing up in wire-service accounts of the protests, and they are routinely beating the wires and TV by a wide margin -- generally hours.

UFPJ held a protest/news conference about the prison conditions this morning, I believe. I imagine that this story will get some attention -- but only after delegates leave next week. It's the Miami/FTAA thing all over again, where the abuses don't come out until way later.

Whoa. I'm glad to see this picture. I was looking at the picture of her being carried off earlier and she looked EXACTLY like a friend of mine. In this one she looks rabid though I can't say that I blame her.
