He's So Dull

CHORUS:
He's so dull, drives a '63 Rambler
He's so dull, still livin' with his mother
He's so dull and he won't get anywhere with me

He's always callin' on the telephone
He won't go out without a chaperone
Cuz he's so afraid 2 be alone with me

He's always reading science magazines
And he doesn't even wear blue jeans
Why can't he understand what all this means 2 me?

CHORUS

He watches television night and day
He doesn't listen 2 a word I say
And he's always tryin' 2 walk me home from school

I'd like 2 tell'em that I wish he was dead (Drop dead)
But he could never get it through his head
He'll never change, he'll always be a fool

CHORUS

(Anywhere, I say he won't get anywhere)
He's so dull {x4}
He's so dull (Still livin' with his mother)
He's so dull (I bet he never had a lover)
He's so dull (And he won't get anywhere with me)
He's so dull
He's so dull (Still livin' with his mother)
(I bet he never had a lover)
(And he won't get anywhere with me) {fade out}

He doesn't to me. He drives this car and reads science magazines (OMNI? I hope so)! I'll go over to his mom's place anytime and watch Square Pegs with him!

But he doesn't wear blue jeans. Omni is pseudoscience, BTW.

The thing about Vanity is... what happened alot in the 80's was you have this nerdy guy or girl, with glasses and highwaters and then something happens and they become super-hot and very desirable. So if she disses this guy then he becomes a stud, she'll be bummed.

andy, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:34 (twenty years ago) link

i interned for the publishing house that put out penthouse and omni. a long time ago.

anyhow the subject of the song is dull obv. cuz he doesn't relate to vanity emotionally or physically. the disses of his reading choices and lack of sartorial flair are just lashing out. she's wounded.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:37 (twenty years ago) link

omni was alot cooler than fortean times

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:38 (twenty years ago) link

if he can't relate to her he should find a more suitable girlfriend... like me, for instance!

The only way that Omni was better than Fortean Times was the fiction - stories by Burroughs, VS Pritchett, Arthur Clarke were common. Otherwise it was all hogwash about magnet cars and chatter from the stars.

did roger dean ever do one of these?

I think Omni is a direct descendent of the old Saga magazine of the 60s-70s... bigfoot, conspiracies, new aircraft, etc., but all packaged for men.... paranoid, delusional men.

Argosy was another good one but had a more outdoorsy feel.

andy, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:52 (twenty years ago) link

omni was middlebrow in the same way that kraftwerk were middlebrow. which isn't necessarily a bad thing! that was the most interesting boomer culture ever got.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:56 (twenty years ago) link

(mainstream culture i mean, not counterculture)

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:57 (twenty years ago) link

I actually had a subscription to Omni for a couple years when I was about 12 or 13. I wish I'd kept them all, they'd probably be good for re-reading. They always had ads for dildos and pep pills too (part of the Penthouse connection, I guess.).

andy, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:03 (twenty years ago) link

i would like to see a film that had the aesthetic of omni magazine

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:05 (twenty years ago) link

i guess westworld comes close

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:05 (twenty years ago) link

THX-1138 too, but I'm sure Lucas has wiped that all away for his upcoming "how-it-was-meant-to-be-shown" revisionistic "director's cut."

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:09 (twenty years ago) link

"Contact" was pretty darn Omni. Specially the stupid alien part.

andy, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:09 (twenty years ago) link

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:13 (twenty years ago) link

but but i believed every word i ever read in OMNI! geez

(i dont know a single person who took it at face value)

kephm (kephm), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:15 (twenty years ago) link

"Time Masters" for the Moebius animation, "Dark Star" for the nerd boredom factor, maybe throw in the first "Star Trek" flick for the "bald sci fi woman" trope.
