I'm curious to see this as I'd like to see what Baryshnikov's dancing is like, but I've heard the political thriller element is insufferable. Plus Isabelli Rosselini is allegedly underused.

I have not seen this since I was 10 and watched every ballet movie ever made. The defection of dancers to the U.S. was pretty serious business in the art world of the 80s, with elaborate plans to bring them here and KGB involvment and everything. Barishnikov's dancing is always amazing, his personality, on the other hand...

a google image search for "white knights" didn't bring up what I was looking for to say the least.

the thriller plot is silly but i like how for almost the whole duration it seems to be moments away from revealing some real political insight, only to be interrupted over & over by HOT MOVES

also the details of the setup are really funny, like hines defecting to russia to escape ghetto life and winding up performing porgy & bess in siberia

x-post
Does she like the Nutcracker Coke fest that they show every year on PBS? My childhood dreams were ruined when I found that out.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:47 (twenty years ago) link

i saw harlem nights a few months ago in a fly-invested mexican diner in new buffalo, michigan! (also the sdtk is bangin')

haha when baryshnikov and helen mirren are arguing he becomes so overcome with emotion that instead of yelling he starts BALLETING AT HER = best argument tactic ever

jones (actual), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:50 (twenty years ago) link

helen mirren is in this?

[insert joey lawrence "whoa!" here]

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:51 (twenty years ago) link

me and my friends frequently rented crappy movies in college. Harlem Nights is one of the few we couldn't actually finish.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:52 (twenty years ago) link

frankly I knew Pharrell Williams was not to be trusted after he appeared in a homage to it.

oh wow TAP IMPROVOGRAPHY by gregory hines

i also like how they blast 'seperate lives' by phil collins all day long because the apartment is bugged!!

jones (actual), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:44 (twenty years ago) link

Say you, say me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:45 (twenty years ago) link

yeah i wonder how phil felt writing a song called "Seperate Lives (Love Theme from White Nights)" and then losing the Oscar to a song that barely makes sense on its own, nevermind over the end credits of this movie

jones (actual), Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:41 (twenty years ago) link

jerzy skolimowski WTF?!?!?!

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 2 September 2004 02:07 (twenty years ago) link

The opening sequence where the plane crashes in USSR, and Mikhail tries to flush his papers down the toilet and the food cart goes everywhere was pretty exciting.

The rest of the movie, not so exciting. Not like that airplane scene.

To the person looking to see Baryshnikov (or however you spell it) dance in a movie - "The Turning Point" w/ Anne Bancroft and Shirley Maclaine. An added bonus is that the 2 leading ladies resort to fisticuffs at the end of the movie.

"White Nights" - cheesy movie. But Helen Mirren speaks Russian in it, which is kind of cool. Plot is a total cheesebomb.
And, yea. Barysh was still hot in 1985.
