great, now Tom Leykis can crow about how right he was for broadcasting her name over the airwaves.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Is it bad that I was actually HAPPY to read that he (Leykis) was assaulted? I just wish it had been a woman.

"Tom Leykis hurt in late-night Belltown assault
By HECTOR CASTRO
The Seattle Post IntelligencerUSA - An apparently unhappy listener assaulted radio personality Tom Leykis early Monday while the shock jock was in Seattle.

Leykis, whose Los Angeles-based program is heard locally on station KQBZ-FM, could not be reached for comment yesterday. Station management said they would not comment.

Police said they are investigating and have assigned a detective to the case.

"We are taking it very seriously," spokesman Scott Moss said yesterday.

The attack happened about 3:45 a.m. Monday outside the 5 Point Cafe near Belltown, according to a police report on the incident.

Leykis, 48, and a female companion were in the restaurant when he stepped outside alone for some fresh air. A man who was with two friends followed Leykis and snapped a photo, returning back inside and showing the photo to the two men with him.

When Leykis' companion went outside, the three men, all said to be in their 20s, followed. One of them confronted Leykis, saying he had called the radio program and that the radio host had insulted him on the air and questioned his virility.

"You had no right to do that," the man said.

One of his friends, the one who had snapped the photo, then kicked Leykis in the head, knocking him to the ground. Both men then ran off.

The third man apologized to Leykis as he and his companion got into a cab and headed for Leykis' hotel. The hotel called 911 for medical aid.

Leykis suffered a black eye, a cut above his eye that needed 17 stitches to close and scrapes to his knee.

Leykis' shows tend to be raunchy, and he often abuses those who call him. On his Web site, he includes hate e-mail he has received as a result of his program.

He is also known for courting controversy.

In 2001, he created a stir when he named a woman who tried to commit suicide by leaping from the Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle.

Last year, he named the woman accusing Lakers basketball player Kobe Bryant of rape. In both cases, the mainstream media had not named the women."

Anyway, sorry to go off point --
This sucks. Whether or not Kobe raped the girl, the defense's beahvior during this trial was fucking disgusting.
There are these 2 young black dudes that stand at the corner of Hollywood and Highland on weekends selling T-shirts that say "First O.J., now Kobe?" (referring to a black athlete "assumed guilty") -- a scene that fills me with all sorts of conflicted issues of guilt and doubt.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Leykis is a useless piece of shit. I feel a little bad that I was UNhappy to read it was just a kick to the head.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Leykis is pretty disgusting, but I think that he has a valid point. Unfortunately, his actions did more harm to the situation.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:56 (twenty years ago)

what was his point?

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 21:57 (twenty years ago)

In re: to the Kobe case, he was saying that it was unfair for Kobe to be widely known as an accused rapist while the alleged victim remained in secrecy. Of course, giving out the alleged victim's name only serves to make the situation worse and make (certain reasonable) people less sympathetic to your cause.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:01 (twenty years ago)

There's a reason for the secrecy, i.e. protection.

He also said if she was raped by him, rape is nothing to be ashamed of and the woman shouldn't feel bad about it. But of course he was just being a bully and it's entirely plausible that one of his mouth-breathing listeners would have taken it upon themselves to seek her out. He just hates women.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:04 (twenty years ago)

I don't agree with any of his other comments on the situation, if what you've said is correctly attributed to him, but what exactly do you mean by "There's a reason for the secrecy, i.e. protection."?

If you're talking about protecting the alleged victim then I agree with you that that's necessary but it should be equally important to protect the alleged suspect until that person has been committed of the crime.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:07 (twenty years ago)

err "convicted"

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I agree, and Leykis' point was nullified by what he did.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I sound like M@tos disagreeing with someone about grime!

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm curious as to how the kick went out. I know he's fat and I'd think that it's safe to assume that's he's short as well. I wonder if the guy gave him a standing roundhouse kick to the head?

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:22 (twenty years ago)

he is fat. I thought he was short and sort of twee for some reason, but really he looks exactly like you'd think.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:23 (twenty years ago)

softly weeping--you need to see the back of that t-shirt. the front says "first OJ, now Kobe", on the back it says "that's it--no more white girls". i don't really see it as a comment on black athletes' presumed guilt.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Wow! I definitely never saw that, Dan. Not that this development makes the shirts any more acceptable. I have seen those kids in some heavy interactions with disgusted passersby...
Anyways, I like to picture the Leykis kick as a Karate Kid-style crane kick.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago)

"This sucks. Whether or not Kobe raped the girl, the defense's beahvior during this trial was fucking disgusting."

How so? Their client was in danger of being put in jail for the rest of his life. They maintain his innocence. Should they have accepted the accuser's story at face value? Should they have let her motives and story go unchallenged?

I think the stories make it pretty clear that if anyone is to be vilified in this thing, it's the prosecutors. They fucked up the case, they hid evidence, and they pursued a case they KNEW they couldn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Well, Scott, I guess it depends on your feelings in regards to the admittance of alleged victims' past sexual histories in trials of this sort. I find the idea to be offensive to begin with. In this particular case, when you factor in the lengths the defence was going to to try to avoid/get around Colorado's Rape Shield Law (granted, in the interest of defending their client -- but that doesn't automatically mean it's not repulsive!), it becomes even more upsetting. I think everyone can agree that both sides were grasping at straws.

There's also the little matter of the those files that kept getting "accidentally" leaked to the internet, containing personal information about the young woman and the internal hearing concerning the relevance of her sexual history.

If none of that works, can I at least say that Kobe Bryant is fucking disgusting, for cheating on his wife and baby?

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:29 (twenty years ago)

speaking of Lakers being sleazy, I've always wondered how many of the women Magic Johnson slept with are HIV positive and how many are still alive.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 23:34 (twenty years ago)

x-post, what did they do to "avoid/get around" the rape shield law, exactly? It seems to me they tried to get as much information as possible into the case that was relevant and beneficial to their client--i.e. that there was evidence that she possibly had sex with someone else the same night. That evidence is very relevant to this case because her alleged injuries could have been caused by THAT encounter.

The rape sheild laws are meant to protect victims from being attacked as promiscuous or somehow "asking for it." That's not at all what Kobe's lawyers were trying to do, it seems to me.

As for the leaks, there are lots of court personnel with access to those files to, I would guess. We don't know who leaked them.

I am not a fan of Kobe, but nor do I think the lawyers in this case did anything untoward (at least that I have heard, but if you have some more specific examples, I am sure there is some info I haven't heard). Agreed that he seems like a sleazy dude.

Loya: "Is this, I don't mean to offend you in any way but is this a habit of yours, that you cheat on your wife?"

Winters: "Has this ever happened before?"

Bryant: "Um, yes, with one other person. And she could actually testify I do that um, I do the same thing, I hold her from the back, I put my hands (inaudible)."
