Are Southampton really trying to employ Clive Woodward as a member of their coaching staff?

Latest crazy move from a man who tried to employ Glenn Hoddle. Twice.

I was quite annoyed the boy Swygart wasn't on MSN last night so I could go "Ha" repeatedly at this.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 2 September 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

This is insane. Woodward should clearly be coaching the English football team instead. In other news, I hear Duncan Fletcher is currently being sounded out about the now vacant rugby union position.

he might yet.....

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 2 September 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Boyler or someone to thread to tell me if there are any other instances of coaches trying to move from one sport to another. I'm more than sceptical of the notion that winning the World Cup in one sport automatically means you're going to be any good at coaching anything else.

And yet the two or three rugby fans I've spoken to think this is a fantastic idea. If the rugby authorities announced tomorrow that they were getting in Big Phil Scolari as Woodward's replacement there'd be an outcry.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 September 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Are these rugby fans management consultants?

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 2 September 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom - if I could get my head out of my hands...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 2 September 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

This Woodward is unlikely to be involved in tactics, just shouting and barking orders at a bunch of underperforming shambolic footballers in red n white.

Southampton for relegation, at least Woodward would have a realistic target for 2005-2006 season.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 2 September 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Richard Branson for the England rugby job.

The guardian has a list of people who have switched code on their site (it is as promising as you would expect!)

___ (___), Thursday, 2 September 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Physical coaching, team spirit and all that, he might be good at. And he's a long-time football fan and was a keen player, so it seems possible that he might be able to adjust tactically. If you see a gang of Svenssons linking arms and charging up the field together, you know he's not got the hang of it yet.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 2 September 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Rupert Lowe is an uber cockfarmer; the fact that he's mentioned as someone who's 'progressive' depresses the bejesus out of me.

I've heard a few people mention this quite seriously! The best thing about all this is the interview Woodward gave where he basically said what we all know to be true anyway: that football rules and rugby is RUBBISH

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't the England rugby team play a very negative close-you-down Greek-style strictly-no-fannydangle hoof-it-up-to-Johnny type game? Boyler, you should be dancing in the street.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Clive Woodward:

"My whole background is in football. I love football and I go to as many games as I possibly can," he says. "I never had that passion for rugby I have for football. I never got into rugby in the same way."

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That is a rubbish argument. It's like saying Nick Hornby should be allowed to manage Arsenal because he goes to every game and writes books about them.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

He'd never be able to adapt to dealing with highly paid cockfarming footballers.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

He's just saying he prefers football to rugby. This was an interview he gave before all this business came up.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Hornby should be allowed to manage Arsenal. Then they might lose a game once in a while.

I saw Cl1ve W00dward give a speech at the F00tball Writers Awards, whioch didn't sound like a man in love with the game; maybe the idea was that he was a WINNER whatever that actually is. My understanding is 'successful psychotic'.

Matt - Rugby hoofing is still Rugby = abomination.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you imagine Woodward putting up with the shit and general abuse that's thrown at football managers - from media, fans, players, directors? I think not somehow.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No. Despite being a wanker of the highest order, Woodward is pretty direct and honest.
