Plumbing: Classic or Dud?

I have workmen in my place RIGHT NOW chopping out a section of the main pipe in the building, which has a crack running all down it. Said crack was causing feces from the third floor to pool in the basement. Last year both of the pipees that connect to the city sewer broke and ended up costing us (the building) $17,000 to fix.

Would setting up a Paypal account begging strangers for money be crass.

At this point, no. How old is the building anyway?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 September 2004 13:48 (twenty years ago)

IIRC, it's about 80 to 100 years old.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 September 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm. (The California approach would be to sue the builders, but this seems like a no-go in your case, unless you dig up the dead.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 September 2004 13:50 (twenty years ago)

I could sue the shit out of a dead person.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Go forth.

Now more seriously, is this kind of thing a problem in your neighborhood or is it just your building in particular that's been cursed?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:01 (twenty years ago)

sting their descendants, presumably there will be a nice healthy population pool by now

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:02 (twenty years ago)

is this a co-op building?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Ned, are you suggesting that place could be a hell gate?

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Well sure! (More to the point, if other buildings also had plumbing problems vis-a-vis the main sewer, it could be telling, but the third-floor-to-basement horror is its own nastiness.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:05 (twenty years ago)

no matter how I think about it it does not get any less disgusting. Just be thankful the pipes didn't freeze then explode

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:11 (twenty years ago)

It's just my particular building (which has been converted into six tenant-owned condos, so that $17,000 was really $2833.33 to each unit, which STILL sucks because I think our current monthly budget is running at net +$50 a month) that's been cursed.

Will my wife understand if I prostitute myself?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:20 (twenty years ago)

yes, she may even be excited by it.

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:22 (twenty years ago)

YAY

$50/half hour, satisfaction guaranteed (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:24 (twenty years ago)

well I don't know if it would help, but certainly no one noticing a problem with the building having old pipes before you moved in might be litigation-worthy.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:24 (twenty years ago)

seriously, I sympathise. i have been living in student accomodation for years and it is a life of putting up with shitty unnecessary imperfection, though thankfully never the plumbing. frankly it costs far too much to live in a hovel round here and I want to punish the fascist landowners. Wanna go halves in a witch doctor consultation?

four years pass...

This morning my wife was taking a shower upstairs, getting ready for work, and I was asleep downstairs in our other bedroom. I was awakened by a horrible sound that I am very attuned to, the sound of WATER DRIPPING INSIDE MY ROOM.

Yes, the shower is leaking through my ceiling. Don't know yet whether it's the pipes in or the drain out, but I need to do some diagnostic tests.

Wish me luck, ILX.

Good luck...
Builders moved my washing machine and now it's flashing random error messages at me and I have a horrid suspicion it's leaking at the back over my newly sanded and varnished floor :-O

Not the real Village People, Wednesday, 17 June 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

as of 1 PM I have been unable to duplicate the leak. Tried running the shower/bath/drain in numerous different configurations. It is a disturbing mystery.

two years pass...

ughughughgg

sometime last night, a heap of black/brown gunk and dirty water backed up into our sink drain and onto the floor. i have a guy here looking at it now, but a. and i checked into a hotel last night so we could have a clean bathroom to use -- we were both pretty grossed out and didn't get any sleep. could be a sewer line that's not draining properly? dunno. meanwhile, our building's water supply line cracked a few weeks ago and they had to replace the whole pipe.

plumbers must make so much damn money.

Often a catch basin issue. Are you in a house?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 October 2011 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

Also, despite any advice to the contrary, things like dental floss, tampons, etc, should never, ever go down the toilet.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 October 2011 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

Are you in a house?

apartment, ground floor.

ms. c flat (get bent), Monday, 10 October 2011 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

catch basin theory is interesting -- it rained hard a few days ago. and i think i saw some small branch/twig pieces among the gunk.

ms. c flat (get bent), Monday, 10 October 2011 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

The rotted-out semi-rebuilt mobile home that we're trying to pretend is a house has a septic tank that needs to be pumped. However, none of the people who are living in or next to the building have any money to get it pumped out, so we've had to put up with a large bad-smelling puddle of filth in the backyard for a while.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Thursday, 13 October 2011 07:19 (thirteen years ago)

Yuck. BTW. xposting, don't underestimate the invasiveness of tree roots. Those things can travel a long way from the trunk and clog up pipes through the tiniest of cracks. Then the branch serves as a sort of net to catch all those things that really shouldn't go down the toilet and presto, the line backs up.

one year passes...

There has been a sewer/grease/fat explosion in the basement/laundry room of my building and the smell is noxious enough to stick to you after you leave. As I tried to clean my clothes while not stepping into piles/puddles of waste, I was talking with the overly apologetic toothless bosnian plumber and the conversation went like this:

me: so this is happening because people are pouring grease into the sink to get rid of it?
him: yes, i believe so
me: who does that? who pours grease into their sink to get rid of it?
him: ...greasy people?

lol

I've lost count of the number of times I've tried to convince Mr Veg that I'm not insane for putting excess grease into a sealed container in the trash. I mean, I do it anyway, but WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU THINK IT BELONGS DOWN THE DRAIN

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 27 December 2012 21:35 (twelve years ago)

it really really really does not belong down the drain
i wish someone would tell my neighbors that -- word has it they do A LOT of frying

ugh
