Around the same time as Spinal Tap, who's seen it?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw it on MTV years ago. It's the same folks as Young Ones, right?

andy, Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. There are two episodes. In the second they play at Castle Donnington and get their heads kicked in. The footage in the latter appears to be taken at a real Donnington festival. There are even soundbites from Lemmy, The Scorpions and Ozzy putting shit on the band.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

AH, I haven't thought about "Fistful of Traveller's Cheques" in years... that was hilarious.

andy, Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

They resemble Saxon towards the end. They actually have one really great song, the lyric goes "Burning shooting raping looting"

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 2 September 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Warriors of Genghis Khan, it was called.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the one! Great tune. Like Saxon does Motorhead. A shame it wasn't a hit (some idiot went into a shop and bought 350 copies and they were penalised for hyping by having their single removed from the charts for 3 weeks).

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

They're both great, but "More Bad News" is way funnier than "Bad News Tour.'

"Why can't YOU be Roger Daltrey?"
"Because I'm not a queer!"

retort pouch (retort pouch), Thursday, 2 September 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Colin: "What's that?"
Alan/Vim: "That is a record contract. That is what you get when you keep gigging over the years and keep the band name alive. That is what you get when you don't join the masses and start working in a bank..."
Den: "Oh yeah, 'cos you've been touring round wine bars doing Mary Hopkins numbers, haven't you. < sings > Those were the days, my friend..."

or

Colin: "Is that true Vim? You're worried because you think you might be queer?"

or

Den: "I'm not getting back in the van till he says we're heavy metal."

I could do this all night. Much as I love Spinal Tap, the two Bad News' are ABSOLUTELY SO FAR BEYOND FUCKING CLASSIC IT HURTS. Untouchable.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 2 September 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the way 'Warriors of Genghis Khan' came out on a label called Frilly Pink.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Bad News craps all over spinal tap, I love it! I can hear Adrian Edmonsons horrible singing already...

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 2 September 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

thirty bucks used for the CD...

(Jon L), Friday, 3 September 2004 00:22 (twenty years ago)

"Drink Till I Die'; 'Masturbike' ... these titles promise a great deal...

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 3 September 2004 05:02 (twenty years ago)

"Drinking makes me mellow, metal makes me mean, I'm a heavy metal, heavy drinking psycho axe machine." (I think, from memory)

I will be posting to this thread all day.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 3 September 2004 06:05 (twenty years ago)

Vim: "Well, obviously, it's a political song, isn't it?"
Sally: "Burning, looting, raping, shooting... how is that political?"
Vim: "It's more sort of... poetical political..."

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 3 September 2004 07:45 (twenty years ago)

I forgot, that bit's followed by:

Sally:"It doesn't simply, sort of, indulge the macho male ego's preoccupying and overriding obsession with dominating women and orgiastic blood letting for the sake of it, then?"
Den:"Yeah, that's the bits I like."

I have found this site: http://homepages.tesco.net/~acp/badnews/bn_scrpt.htm

No work will get done today.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 3 September 2004 07:55 (twenty years ago)

"LETS PRETEND TO BE THE WHO!"

i want to watch these again right now.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:02 (twenty years ago)

dude, i saw the actual tour. they did real gigs to support the whole idea and were popular in universities the same time i was being unpopular in university.

i remember lots of cardboard Marshalls and just how easy it was for 4 comedians with no musical talent (afaik) to look pretty authentic.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:10 (twenty years ago)

Den: "Oh, I get it. Alan's called Vim and your mum's dead."

I am definitely watching these again tonight.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:16 (twenty years ago)

thirty bucks used for the CD...

i'm sure emi just rereleased this.

no, Bad News isn't as good as Spinal Tap. But its childishly hilarious, and the album can be quoted in full by my brother and myself.

"you stupid pretend popstar"

"twenny grand?"

"you are shit, everything about you is shit. your brain is shit. your body is shit."

"we need a nappy roadie"

stevie (stevie), Friday, 3 September 2004 09:11 (twenty years ago)

Vim:"I could play "Stairway To Heaven" when I was twelve. Jimmy Page didn't actually write it until he was twenty-two. I think that says quite a lot."

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:06 (twenty years ago)

Den:"Wait a minute! It says "sausages" up there, not just one sausage! Look at that! Look, it says "sausages"! Where's me other sausage, then?"

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:13 (twenty years ago)

The album has just been reissued on CD. It got reviewed in the most recent issue of "classic rock" magazine.

My band played at a music festival on a cumbrian hill farm a coupla months ago. another band on the bill were like this satanic metal band w/leather/pvc gear, corpse paint etc. 1/2 way through their set, they played "warriors of ghengis khan". We didn't sus what they were playing until they'd nearly finished it, then we were like, WOW. FUCK.

"Bad News" is ridiculously great. the whole thing of playing gigs to no-one, in nowheresville is horribly accurate. I haven't seen the one where they play donington.

Bad News the band was very obviously based on this terrible nwobhm band called spider.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Vim: How's it going with you, mate? Alright?

Colin: Yeah! I feel a bit wrecked, actually. (Laughs) Bloody hell, it's a bit cramped in here, isn't it? Yeah, I feel a bit wrecked, you know.

Den: D'you see the Whistle Test last night?

Colin: Sort of, yeah, but I... I was really stoned, you know, and I drank a bottle of brandy, and... yeah, I was with this chick and we were just about to get down to it - huh - I went and put my foot through the television set.

Vim: Oh no!

Colin: Yeah, so it sort of blew up a bit, you know, and set fire to the curtains, and I missed the second half of the show, so...

Den: I bet your mum was really angry!

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 3 September 2004 11:56 (twenty years ago)

I love the character of Colin.

A roadie years ago set up a British touring band (Jesus Jones I think), saying, 'ullo spider!' instead of 'one, two' into the mics. I thought that was so funny I've been testing mics the same way ever since. He got it from Bad News, I only realised when I saw it again this week.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Yay Bad News! I've got the album on VINYL OMG.

'...flap flap flap... that's a bat... flap flap flap...'

Sexual Air Supply (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 4 September 2004 00:17 (twenty years ago)

I want this on DVD...are these things legit or some knock-off, or what?

I just found BOTTOM on DVD today. I'm not sure if I'm worried or thrilled.
