I tell ya -- Freedom and Democracy may indeed be in jeopardy, but CAPITALISM is certainly alive and well. I've never seen so many t-shirt vendors in my life. It's an odd, agoraphobic scene down there.

Also, is anyone else freaked out by the seemingly ubiquotous FUJI Film/NYPD blimb? I was convinced it was following me up 6th Avenue the other day.

i'm really suspicious of that blimp. it's everywhere. i'm waiting for one of the hundreds of police helicopters to run into it.

Alex, was "Magic Bus" playing while it was following you? Did you have to drive to Rockaway to get the hat?

I knew there was a "Goodfellas" allusion percolating somewhere. I had to run home and make pasta.

Are there as many t-shirt vendors as there are cowboy hat salesman at the convention Alex? Man, where did all those things come from? I would say people brought them, but they all seem to be pretty similar. Maybe the GOP is giving them out - in which case, who do they think will be impressed by a room full of aging western extras?

The blimp just flew over Park Slope -- everyone on 7th Ave stopped and looked up...

Hey, I'm not knockin' it per se -- hell, I almost bought one (a nice red one underscoring the importance of the separation of church and state). It was just striking, that's all.

I hate cowboy hats. Actually, I'm gonna take that a step further and say that I hate cowboys.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 3 September 2004 02:14 (twenty years ago)

now at least 3000 people nearing the protest pen on 30th street.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 3 September 2004 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Apparently the protest permit expires at 11:35PM and that's when the police start making arrests.

the mood in the march from Union Sq was jubilant and friendly. people chanted "N-Y-P-D, protect us from the GOP" as they walked past the cops blocking off the streets, hadn't heard that before. lots of people waving from windows and coming out of their buildings. I ducked out at 7th Ave because I didn't want march all night and I wasn't sure at what point the net would appear and I would lose the chance to walk away. my friend kept going, I hope he doesn't let his excitement get the best of him
