The DVD Box Set: Thing of evil or thing of beauty?

I'm conflicted.

You see, I get stupidly excited about seeing DVD box sets for TV shows like Lost in Space, Transformers and the first series of Star Trek...yet at the same time I think I'm wasting money on things that make me stay at home and maybe I wouldn't have thought about if I hadn't seen the box set...I am getting the Star Trek one though.

What DVD Boxsets are you anticipating? Do you feel the same way?

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I was gonna say that stuff like this is like porn to me, but then I realized that you can actually buy porn on dvd. so that would have been silly.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago)

If you ever plan on having the flu in the near future, these things might help you out better than soda crackers and ginger ale. That's all I can say.

sexyDancer, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago)

also: tinker tailor soldier spy

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

The only DVD boxset I'll buy is the Band of Brothers one.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

When's Season Two of Spongebob Squarepants coming out?

Huck, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

there are so many already out that i still need to pick up: A-Team, X-files, Simpsons, Northern Exposure, Sanford and Son, the list goes on and on

kephm (kephm), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:10 (twenty years ago)

ive got a Honeymooners one cause they are nice and cheap

kephm (kephm), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:11 (twenty years ago)

at the book sale a while back i actually bought 5 Avengers box-sets on VHS cuz they were like a dollar a piece. I just love box-sets. Oh, and i bought the rat pack box-set (ocean's 11, etc) on VHS at the thrift store and it's sealed and I'm not even gonna open it. That's how nutty i am about them. I hardly ever even use my vcr anymore. somebody stop me!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:11 (twenty years ago)

i love those cheap horror ones for 20 bucks that have like 50 movies on them. Cuz you can never own too many copies of Carnival Of Souls & Cathy's Curse!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:12 (twenty years ago)

endless beauty and joy forever. I really want to get the "chances" box set.

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago)

My homeboy that just moved in brought this thing with him:
http://www.laserdisken.dk/billeder/forsidealm/10200693397432379.jpg
Like every episode of Battlestar Galactica EVER. HOLY FUCKING CHRIST.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:17 (twenty years ago)

BEAUTY, except for the pressure of them coming out faster than I can afford them.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:17 (twenty years ago)

50 movies?
these are what i have the most of "the best of sonny chiba 10 pack" "crime fighters" (bad 70's cop movies) , a replicant 10 pack one, "houses of horror" - i love them. it used to be one could only find these at like Kims in NYC or through mail order.

kephm (kephm), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:17 (twenty years ago)

i still want the Prisoner box, but i never feel like shelling out the money for it when i see it.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:18 (twenty years ago)

I liked the video edition of the Prisoner box that I bought a few years back, because it was in two halves. I'd never have put up £50 for the whole thing, but somehow two sets at £25 was OK.

(the whole thing is just a single box - part 1 had the box itself, two of the five tapes, and a filler box with merchandising crap in it - postcards, a Prisoner bottle-opener, and so on. Part 2 just had the other three tapes)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Bewdy.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Is there a Sci-fi B-Movie box set? Stuff like Them!, This Island Earth etc??

jel -- (jel), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:31 (twenty years ago)

something like them! might be a bit too cult to be packaged into a ten pack, but you might find it on a two or four pack.

offshoots of them! is more likely to be packaged in a box set.

kephm (kephm), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:36 (twenty years ago)

BEAUTY, except for the pressure of them coming out faster than I can afford them.

Quite. What the hell do we need to do to get on promo lists?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I think I might justr buy Them! it's only about £7 on Amazon. It's that bit where the kid screams out "THEM!", so funny.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 3 September 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

The Outer Limits box is bananas, like 32 50min episodes crammed onto 4 discs: sweaty, paranoid data, dude.

sexyDancer, Friday, 3 September 2004 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I'll check the Outer Limits out!

This is a must have:

ALF is finally out on DVD, about damn time.

Boxsets are a thing of beauty, because you can usually hock them on EBay for a small loss when you figure out that they're useless.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago)

The only DVD box set I currently own is the Alien "Quadrilogy" set, which is indeed a thing of beauty.

n/a is absolutely right. These DVDs come out so fast, that I'm left with a huge wants list.

So many great films & TV available now, so little money....

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm on my 12th box set and I have 3 more on the way/

It's an expensive addiction.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I've got the Criterion Bergman and Hitchcock boxsets, Chappelle Show S1, all the Buffys and Angels, My So-Called Life, both West Wings, Dawson's Creek S1, Firefly and Twin Peaks, and a Hong Kong Six Feet Under S1.

I gave up drinking for DVDs.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:22 (twenty years ago)

i actually have very few of these--one buffy box (s2) only. but i wouldn't kick any of them ou tof bed

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 3 September 2004 21:09 (twenty years ago)

OMG NICKALICIOUS I HAVE THAT

MATH BLASTER MYSTERY! (ex machina), Friday, 3 September 2004 21:26 (twenty years ago)

My own box set addictions are the MST3K episode sets. Things of beauty, of course.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Nine out of ten cable television executives agree - the DVD boxed set is pure evil. Just as we were all verging on the Golden Age of 1,474 cable channels, the DVD box set has undermined The Dream. All those hours to fill and so little content left to exploit! Watch the WSJ for details of the first-ever deal between Comcast and the Snuff Film Makers Association.

You heard it here first on ILE!

Aimless The Unlogged, Friday, 3 September 2004 22:16 (twenty years ago)

The only box set I own is The Prisoner one and a couple of the Avengers ones.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 3 September 2004 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Evil because they are so beautiful.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 3 September 2004 22:22 (twenty years ago)

I almost got an Avengers one...

MATH BLASTER MYSTERY! (ex machina), Friday, 3 September 2004 22:23 (twenty years ago)

The Avengers ones are SO tempting...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 22:56 (twenty years ago)

the first series of Star Trek...yet at the same time I think I'm wasting money on things that make me stay at home and maybe I wouldn't have thought about if I hadn't seen the box set...I am getting the Star Trek one though.

Star Trek TOS? Not those overpriced 2ep. volumes but a first season box set? Details? Link?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's either out or about to come out, and the other two seasons will follow. Just go to startrek.com, I'm sure there's stuff there about it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Awesome. I was hoping I wouldn't have to bite the bullet and buy all those goddam volumes.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:28 (twenty years ago)

If only the US Max Headroom series would get boxed... I love me some failed sci fi tv.
Misfits of Science: respect!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:48 (twenty years ago)

My Sanford & Son Seasons 1-3 box sets are like, I dunno...Golden Monoliths Of Joy.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Ok did some research. The 2nd and 3rd seasons come out in Nov/Dec respectively.
"The Cage" will probably be tacked onto the 3rd season set cuz they're sticking to the original broadcast order.
Season 1 is $85 from Amazon and it's already in my cart.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Sean is thrilled only because he can say it was a time when Canadians ruled the galaxy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Hey, two Canadians in starring roles. How can you go wrong?

*grousegripe*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 02:25 (twenty years ago)

This phenomenon of people paying for tv shows (which, remember, were originally intended to be watched for free) is fascinating and I'm not sure what to make of it (especially how it relates to, say, musicians who put music out for free download who later hope to sell the same music).

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 September 2004 02:27 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's the ability to have it on call, isn't it? And the attempt to spiff up the reasons for watching it on DVD as opposed to tapes or on file trading will be the usual ones -- clearer pictures, better quality, commentaries and extras and all that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 September 2004 02:29 (twenty years ago)

and without commercials! watching commercials is kind of "paying," isn't it?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 September 2004 02:32 (twenty years ago)

you get no....you get NOOOOO.......YOU GET NO COMMERCIALS!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 4 September 2004 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Diane Kruger's career is off to a roaring start: Troy, Wicker Park, the Nic Cage-Masonic Conspiracy movie...

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 4 September 2004 04:49 (twenty years ago)

um, wrong thread.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 4 September 2004 04:51 (twenty years ago)

That seems like a lot of money to pay for no commercials.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 September 2004 05:24 (twenty years ago)

is the prisoner really worth the bread? it seems that they're only available in these ridiculous 3 episode sets here... (in the US...)? i have never seen it but don't live near a quality video store to rent it from. someone mentioned that gondry and jonze should direct a movie adaptation of the series.... wondering...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Saturday, 4 September 2004 05:31 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the link kephm! I must check Roy Loney stuff out, I think I have some of his songs on a comp somewhere...

I think I will put the Star Trek DVD box set on my Christmas list.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:42 (twenty years ago)

yeah but casuistry if you want to see a show that's no longer on the air and you like it, what other option is there? (i don't really understand who's buying all those according to jim and csi miami box sets tho)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago)

you buy the cow if you can't get the milk for free (and as i have only 4 channels, there's very little free milk coming my way, regardless of whether other people are bathing in it)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:55 (twenty years ago)

also AHA what is your stance on paying for cable?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 4 September 2004 15:55 (twenty years ago)

90% of TV on DVD sets are totally dud, since there's rarely anything more than the episodes and a few perfunctory features. When the TV boxed sets are done right, though - Freaks and Geeks, say, or Futurama - they are indeed worth coveting. Same for cult Brit shows of finite runs, like The Office or The Prisoner. These aren't exactly in U.S. syndication. Then again, neither is Punky Brewster.

Movie boxes are different. Often they pack a whole bunch of strong features together, and if you do the math purchasing movie boxed sets are usually good deals, the DVDs cheaper bought together than bought individually.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 4 September 2004 16:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't own a tv. I download tv shows.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 September 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

And before I started downloading, I, well, I mostly watched my old tapes of MST3K and Monty Python on my roommate's tv on those rare occasions when I needed a fix.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 4 September 2004 20:13 (twenty years ago)

THOSE TAPES DIDN'T COME FOR FREE BRO

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 5 September 2004 00:50 (twenty years ago)

i don't see how a good DVD box set could be anything but a thing of beauty.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 5 September 2004 01:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but a blank video tape costs a smidge less than a commercial DVD. (And my parents were paying for the cable anyway.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 5 September 2004 08:19 (twenty years ago)

Casuistry, it's all about the shiny packaging.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Casuistry, these box sets just aren't intended for commie bastards like you :P

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 10:42 (twenty years ago)
