Chipotle sucks.

today, i met a friend at chipotle & asked the counter folk if they had nutritional information. "It's on the web site" was their answer. So, I go to the website & it's the most frustrating thing of all time. I can't locate the information i want to save my life. I read elsewhere that their tortillas have 340 calories & NINE GRAMS OF PROTEIN. What are the actual ingredients to give a TORTILLA that much protein/calories/etc.? is there lard in there?!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:13 (twenty years ago)

chipotle, i learned last night, is owned by MCDONALD'S. so yeah, no surprise about the lack of info.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:15 (twenty years ago)

i knew that they were owned by mcdonalds. i haven't eaten there since i learned that (including today). i just want to find the actual ingredient listing for their fucking tortillas.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:18 (twenty years ago)

How many calories does a tortilla normally have?

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:19 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was usually under 200 . . . maybe 175. i'll look it up.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:22 (twenty years ago)

i don't think mcdonalds has a controlling interest. plus i'd heard they'd sold it. but i can't find anything online.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:24 (twenty years ago)

right. flour tortillas are usually between 150-200 & corn tortillas are significantly less (btwn 50-90).

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:24 (twenty years ago)

That's bizarre. I've eaten at Chipotle only a handful of times. I always get the black bean veggie burrito and a sody pop. I knew it couldn't be terribly healthy because I get mine with cheese but OH MY GOD. WTF?! So maybe the wraps without stuffing aren't even veggie themselves?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:24 (twenty years ago)

*that's* what i want to know!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I like chipotles, the peppers.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I assume you've seen this site?

http://www.chipotlefan.com/index.php

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:28 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)
It really depends on what kind of tortilla you're talking about. Corn tortillas, if made correctly, are healthy and delicious at the same time. It's the flour variety that's the high calorie (but oh so tasty) option. And yeah, authentic flour tortillas are made with either lard or vegetable shortening, so there is a possibility that there was lard in that tortilla you had. That's REALLY old school. I'd be really surprised, though, because that's something abuelitas do.

(Though I don't know how easy it'd be to figure out the ingredients list. Good luck, though.)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:28 (twenty years ago)

I used the "nutrition calculator," selecting only a 13" tortilla and nothing inside it, and it does indeed say 340 calories, 9g fat. It doesn't list ingredients.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:29 (twenty years ago)

and the ingredient page doesn't either (for the tortilla, specifically). why doesn't chipotle's site have this info?! isn't that illegal or something?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:32 (twenty years ago)

This is fun research.

http://www.fastfoodsource.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=245

"We found many burritos, nachos, quesadillas and platters with more than 1,000 calories and at least a half day's saturated fat and a whole day's sodium," said center director Michael Jacobson, referring to federal nutrition guidelines.

The non-profit consumer health group used nutrition information provided by three Mexican restaurants - Rubio's, La Salsa and Baja Fresh. The organization purchased food at Chipotle's and had it examined in a lab because the company did not supply nutrition information.

The findings reveal that Mexican isn't always healthier than regular fast food. A Chicken Burrito at Chipotle, partially owned by McDonald's, was about the same as eating one-and-a-half Quarter Pounders and a large Coke at the burger chain, in terms of fat, sodium and calories. Chipotle's Vegetarian Burrito had 1,100 calories and 75 percent of the recommended daily intake of saturated fat.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago)

why would anybody think that Mexican is any healthier than any other kind of fast food?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah. i saw that page. the first one i looked at was something like dietfacts.com or something.
& i agree--it is fun research, albeit frustrating.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was just looking at said diet facts page.

Too bad.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:39 (twenty years ago)

I love flour tortillas. I know they're the uncool choice, vs. corn - especially when given the option of really fresh, spongy, handmade corn tortillas - but I can't help myself. I can eat 5 or 5 flour tortillas with carne asada and beans.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:44 (twenty years ago)

5 or 6, even

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Burritos are too big

sexyDancer, Friday, 3 September 2004 18:46 (twenty years ago)

"mexican restaurants"

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's weird, dean.

I liked Baja Fresh ok. So that's bad for you too? SHEESH!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:51 (twenty years ago)

they should have gotten their info from chanos and we wouldnt have such alarm.

'compared to the carnitas and pastrami burrito at chano's, chipotle burritos only have 50% of fat, sodium, etc'

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 3 September 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Baja Fresh is incredibly fattening and caloric. I used to enjoy their burritos "enchilado style" until I looked up the calorie content/fat content on their website... the burritos themselves have about 1,000 calories.. and the "enchilado style" part (enchilada sauce, cheese, side of chips and cheese and all melted and gooey) ads AN ADDITIONAL 900 CALORIES. So the whole thing IS 1,900 CALORIES OMG WTF???? I never ate it again. Now I get the baja style tacos which have about 190 cals apiece and kind of taste like grasshopper mash.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:06 (twenty years ago)

h do you really think that is such a weird assumption?

i go to chipotle out of necessity once or twice a week becuase working in a nightclub, i need something quick to eat when i take my ten minute break (we dont serve food). my options for something quick (the neighborhood has mostly upscale, sit-down places or other clubs) include fudruckers, subway, local chain burrito brothers and chipotle. is it that odd to assume that ordering a chicken burrito with rice, black beans, chicken, lettuce and tomato is somehow healthier than going to fudruckers to get a quarter pounder, fries and a milkshake? obviously mexican cuisine in general has plenty of high-cholesterol and high-fat foods, but what i order seems to be on the healthier side of the spectrum of what is available, and i am a little pissed that it isnt, especially since i have been so angry at myself for subsidising a large corporation (the food at burrito brothers makes me feel like shit). god i hate dc sometimes.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Message of the day: all delicious food is really bad for you.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:07 (twenty years ago)

I think it's a hugely weird assumption given what a lot of Mexican food, as imagined by Americans, is like.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Even the "healthy" burrito at Baja Fresh - the grilled vegetarian - has 700 calories (which seems like quite a bit to me).

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago)

GOD DAMNIT YOU ALL ARE MAKING ME SO HUNGRY

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:14 (twenty years ago)

no see i think it depends h because most of what i put in my burrito is (what i think or thought to be) relatively unprocessed. most food that is unhealthy is made that way instead of being born that way. i guess i am a bit of an idiot to make assumptions... i just figured all that was going into my burrito were the ingredients themselves (ie flour, water, chicken, black beans, rice, lettuce, tomatos). i know exactly what you are talking about inre mexican food in america, but i thought i might be circumvventing that by avoiding cheese, sour cream, refried beans, etc.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:19 (twenty years ago)

all those ingredients sans cheese, sour cream, refried beans still have calories, is I guess what I mean.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:21 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but probably better than a fried burger patty and fried potatoes and sugar-filled soda.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:26 (twenty years ago)

xpost just more than i expected.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:28 (twenty years ago)

I love Baja Fresh! The salsas are very good. I usually get the burrito ultimo with chicken and ask them to hold the cheese and sour cream and add guacamole. I'm amused that someone is surprised that making one of their burritos "enchilada style", which is basically covering it in cheese and an oily tomato sauce, will make it less than healthy. In general holding the cheese, sour cream and mayonaise will reduce the fat content of most fast food to manageable levels. Ground beef at any restaurant (fast or otherwise) is rarely lean and when combined with textured soy protein becomes a serious saturated fat bomb.

also, this line:
chipotle, i learned last night, is owned by MCDONALD'S. so yeah, no surprise about the lack of info.

is a little odd, seeing as McDonald's nutrition information (while not good news), has been available in detail and for a long time.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:34 (twenty years ago)

my knowhow on diet is pretty rudimentary but i think the source of calories is as important as the actual number, right? so if green peppers are high cal i'm not gonna care too much

i eat chipotle a fair amt (i don't have a good excuse either) and i try to go vegetarian and skip the sour cream and cheese (still a sucker for guac tho, which is more lethal). i'm guessing the problem is in the other ingredients in everything, like whatever they do to give the rice its lovely viscosity, sweeteners in the salsas, who knows...

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:35 (twenty years ago)

also, Chipotle sucks because they're stingy with salsa.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:37 (twenty years ago)

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I think the Rubio's Fish Burrito is the best deal in semi-fast food.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 3 September 2004 19:41 (twenty years ago)

See now if they had a chain that sold modestly priced confit de canard in a fast-casual setting in every mid- to large-size American city I'd be all over that

That was OK, I guess. I got the steak. One piece of meat was unchewably gristly and I had to spit it out into a napkin. Something was unexpectedly spicy -- the guacamole? but not in an interesting way, more in a generically hot way. Woman who assaulted Chipotle worker sentenced to fast food job for two months

(Judge) Gilligan told Hayne she could cut off 60 days in jail if she agreed to work at least 20 hours per week at a fast-food restaurant for two months.

Hayne accepted.

In court, Hayne apologised and tried to explain the rationale behind her screaming at the Chipotle worker, 26-year-old Emily Russell.

"If I showed you how my food looked and how my food looked a week later from that same restaurant, it's disgusting looking," Hayne said, according to WJW.

"I bet you won't be happy with the food you are going to get in the jail," Mr Gilligan quipped.
