outside of its obvious phatic content, conversation is just a verbal biding of time, waitin' for the perfect utterance....

I thoroughly disagree. Conversation is an end in itself, not just a means to an end. Perhaps this may be due to the way people think. Is there a forebrain conversation, pattern of words going on in your head right now. Well external conversations are equally as loose in helping to acquire ideas, bat around concepts between more than one mind. Without conversation no external input - no point in even uttering your so called perfect utterance.

I agree with Pete. Which surprises me! ;-)
A perfect utterance could not exist. Bergson would postulate such a language to be outside time and necessarily incomprehensible to a mortal human being.
At least, I think he would.

I don't think that cameron sounds like much fun to hang out with.

the so-called "perfect utterance", were it ever uttered, would end speech entirely. what else would there be to say? i'll stick with my imperfect utterances, thanks.

waitin' for the perfect utterance...

You have to wait?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it doesn't matter that it couldn't exist; it's the listening for it that's important. Also, i DO actually like conversation and interacting with people and i don't believe in solipsism.....
