Can Someone Who is Over 40 Please Explain the Meaning of Life Please?

No really. How are you handling the second half of life? Are you nihilistic and feel the whole thing pointless, or are you bright eyed and ready for the upcoming years?

I suspect that optimism vs. pessimism might have to do with income level, at the bottom of it. Maybe not. What do you think?

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 5 September 2004 02:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm feeling cynical, bleak, and like I'm trapped in a cross between a Woody Allen and David Lynch film. And you?

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 5 September 2004 02:32 (twenty years ago)

as I enter the twilight of my life I feel I have learned many, many, varied things...

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Sunday, 5 September 2004 02:49 (twenty years ago)

Twilight?

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 5 September 2004 02:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm joking. ageist of me I know. I'm used to my parents pulling rank because they are over 40 and they have soooo much more life experience than I do (though it is merely that they privelege their experience above mine). True that I can't say much about being over 40 though
I am not really sure there is much meaning to it anyway, perhaps just a selected, arbitrary purpose.

All you have to do is have fun and then stage a death bed conversion.

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Sunday, 5 September 2004 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Is the fact that I find this thread title incredibly poignant conformist? I'm 20 and have been drinking tonight, fwiw

Cheek0 (Cheek0), Sunday, 5 September 2004 04:58 (twenty years ago)

Live in the moment, grab all the happiness/pleasure you can, with no guilt, do what you can, and don't worry too much about what you can't, or don't want to do.

When I was 16 I couldn't imagine being in my 40s, but now that I'm here I don't feel as different as I assumed I would (the 16 year old me is still kicking and squirming in me).

Fuck youth, be here now.

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Also, there is no meaning, and the sooner people realize that the happier they'll be.

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:07 (twenty years ago)

its a challenge. look forward to it. grasp it.

thats what they tell me and i'm finding it hard to agree.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:11 (twenty years ago)

Side question (hopefully not considered a derailment) : how did turning 30 compare to turning 40?
I'm turning 30 in a couple of weeks, so it's about time I started considering these questions of aging and mortality :)
30 sounds sooooooooooo much older than 29, even though obviously I won't feel any different. Is the 39->40 threshold any different?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:20 (twenty years ago)

30 wasn't a bother.
40 sucks.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:21 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm with Orbit, 30 is still young, but 40 isn't so much.

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:24 (twenty years ago)

40.
I am thinking about mortality, and the fact that I can date senior citizens and have them be within reasonable age range of me. Both thoughts are not cheerful. I don't want to be this negative, and I want' to take nick's advice. I'm just finding it very difficult.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:25 (twenty years ago)

I've always found the mid-decade birthdays more meaningful (and depressing) as markers - 25, 35, and 45. It's the downward slope of the decade. Anyone who feels old at 20 deserves an ass-whuppin'.

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:29 (twenty years ago)

30 i left town, fucked off around the world for 5 years. 40 i had no such escape - i had kids, a house, a job i couldn't afford to leave cos i would have been marked for life as a piker.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 5 September 2004 05:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm 41. It's all in what you do with it.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 5 September 2004 06:44 (twenty years ago)

40 is the new 30, people.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 5 September 2004 06:49 (twenty years ago)

Im 40, no answers here yet and I spent countless hours pondering the question, til lately.
Now I just think " ah fuck it "

relax, there is no meaning other than what you create for yourself, in whatever way suits.

donna (donna), Sunday, 5 September 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

for me, turning 30 was more difficult than turning 40. "where the hell am I going" VS "well here I am."
now that Im closer to 50 than 40, the meaning of life remains elusive. carpe diem/seize the day still works for me. similarly, "it's all in what you do with it" and "there is no meaning other than what you create for yourself" resonate for me.
mid-life crises are usually touched off by the death of a parentand the creeping realization of mortality. that's really the hard part of middle age.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Sunday, 5 September 2004 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Well, we are all likely to live a lot longer, so maybe 40 is the new 30. Barry, turning 30 scared the shit out of me, but it actually doesn't matter. Nothing changes, except you gradually become wiser and more laid back. Also, out of your twenties, you're not expected to do all the crazy things that them young whippersnappers get up to.

What DOES still depress me is articles in Broadcast magazine about successful twenty-somethings. I RESENT THEM SO MUCH

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 September 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago)

37 here

I'm just now starting to look in the mirror and feel old. I used to always swear I wouldn't be one of those people who worried about aging. Don't think about it too much, but I have a feeling that now is the time to do the things that still require physical ability, later might be too late. It's a cliche and all, but I do feel a lot wiser. I didn't care about turning 30 (28 was the one that got me) but I think I'll probably be depressed when 40 hits.

pepektheassassin (pepektheassassin), Saturday, 11 September 2004 20:27 (twenty years ago)

im 25 and pretty nihilistic so let's hope 40 is better.

ryan (ryan), Saturday, 11 September 2004 21:20 (twenty years ago)

The news is all good ryan. At some point, as you get older, you will abandon nihilism as a hopelessly optimistic dream of youth.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 11 September 2004 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Koogs OTM. Finding out I'm older than people who seem much more assured and grown-up than me reminds me that hitting my thirties hasn't made that much difference (Kirstie Allsop being one of them). I can't see me changing as I get to my forties.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 11 September 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Wow, there are a whole bunch of people in this thread who are older than I am (soon to be 37). It would be nice to have a younger body, but other than that, things get so much better. The worst thing is looking around you and seeing how immature some people in their forties can be.

Kerry (dymaxia), Saturday, 11 September 2004 22:16 (twenty years ago)

I am almost at the point where I can distinguish between luxuries and necessities. For me, a lifelong lesson. I'll be 51 in November.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 12 September 2004 01:42 (twenty years ago)

nihilism is the new 'black' for bored kids with no real worries.

and everyone knows the meaning of life is 42. but who can remember the question?

ogmor, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not 40 yet - just!!!!! - and although my 16 yr old self never wrote my adult self any letters, i certainly wrote certain songs as messages to my future self

should dig them out on my 40th birthday and see if they still have any resonance (apart from "lay off that effing delay pedal you cunt")

Karen Tregaskin, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

Asking what is the meaning of life is like asking what is the meaning of rocks, or the meaning of ice cream. Those questions make no sense and answering them only generates nonsense.

Instead, ask how should I live. That question generates answers that do have a meaning. But don't expect there to be just one right answer, just as there is not one answer to a koan.

There are some wrong answers, though. The wrong answers feed our delusions, such as the delusion that we can control anything beyond ourselves, and even our self control is tenuous and requires constant attention. Another delusion is that we can avoid suffering by any means other than the arduous path of wholeheartedly removing the prefix mis- from whatever is our fortune.

So, how should we live? Here's a start: be kind, be grateful, and cultivate patience.

(I'm 55, btw. Oh and I'm white.)

Sorry Karen, if you're not Kate, I think you'd get on with her: she's also a nearly 40-year-old woman in the UK who makes music and likes Aphex Twin, School of Seven Bells, Lindstrom, the Delays, and history.

Francis Ford Copacabana (jaymc), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 18:27 (fifteen years ago)

hey, is she single?

kidding!

quite flattered that i've been able to pass for an actual woman on an internet messageboard despite posting quite incongruously about the gender of my self and my screen name (also implicitly stated in the choice of screen name, if you anything about the artist whose name i've chosen) - i've never pulled that off before

Sausages by Jewel

While leaving the airport,
a gypsy woman stole my luggage.
She wore a rice paper mask over her eyes.
A mole showed neatly on her chin, hairless.
She laughed while sausages
fell from her pockets in heavy shivers.
I hope she misses them sorely.

Enable everyone else to do so as well. You may have heard about people without a conscience - they are the tiniest of minorities and not virulent, unless you let them make the rules.

Well, it's not much of a philosophy, I know. I'll be 40 in April.
