Administration Shuts Down Inquiry into Saudi 9/11 Ties

Bob Graham's new book alleges that:
- two of the 9/11 hijackers benefited from a US support network that included agents of the Saudi Government
- The FBI refused Senate Intelligence inquiry into the matter
- The administration blocked the release of a portion of the Senate Intelligence committee report that detailed the financial backing

Zelikow says the 9/11 Commission interviewed one of the alleged Saudi agents and found nothing there, and implies that Graham is holding onto a pet theory contrary to evidence, but he says nothing about the other alleged agent to have been named, and admits that the FBI may have failed to sufficiently investigate a US support network (not specified as Saudi).

See here and here.

THEY ARE HOLDING FUCKING HANDS!

President Bush greets Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah at his ranch in Crawford, Texas Monday, April 25, 2005. President Bush is seeking relief from record-high gas prices and support for Middle East peace as he opens his Texas ranch to Abdullah. Saudi Arabia is the world's largest oil producer.

Jonah Goldberg was making some bizarre 'haha oh if only I could be an homophobic Islambashing asshole about this *whimper*' comment today.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Obviously, it's not homophobia on my part. I'm almost impresssed that Dubya made the effort to be culturally compentent - it is considered a mark of friendship for men to hold hands in some Arab countries - when meeting the guy, rather than drooling and gibbering "WHY YOU WEARING A TOWEL, BOY?" but, fuck, someone should have taken Dubya to one side beforehand and told him "Dude, you realise that people from his country killed a shitload of our people not even three years ago? Even if we want his oil cheaper, don't appear too close to the guy when you do your stupid photo opportunity, OK?"

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

dudes, presidents get briefings. dubya didn't get the memo on osama but he got the one on hand-holding.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

the bushes and the sauds are buddies. as thick as dubya can be, surely he must have learned SOMETHING about saudi ways through osmosis at least.

twelve years pass...

“The mystery to me is Obama,” remarked (Bob) Graham. He could, he said, understand Bush’s rationale for covering up the Saudi connection in order to bolster the case for war with Iraq. But Obama’s refusal to address the issue, which included a multi-year reluctance to release the twenty-eight pages, mystified him. Meeting with officials on Obama’s National Security Council, he found them “very non-forthcoming. ‘You’ve got all the files,’ ” he told them. “ ‘Go back and verify what I’ve just said and see if you hold the same opinion about the Saudis that you have just stated.’ Either they didn’t want to find out the facts, or if they found them out, they ignored them.”
