Markelby to thread!

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Linford Christie was going to buy the house opposite, but he didn't. This was when he had just won a gold.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The last block of flats I lived in was the former home of Sade, Seal, Robert Elms, Finley Quaye and Nick Kent.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 6 September 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

They all lived together?

jel -- (jel), Monday, 6 September 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

good times.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 6 September 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Sade and Robert Elms obviously did, but the others were tenants at various times. NB there were 120 flats in that block.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 6 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure Dick and Dom (popular children's entertainers) live someehere in west London.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 6 September 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Alvin Stardust and Liza Goddard lived 5 doors down from me when I was younger. This was post pop stardom, Rock Gospel Show era Alvin so he'd lost the haircut unfortunately. He still ruled though.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Monday, 6 September 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

T'Pau?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Monday, 6 September 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

No, T'Pau

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 6 September 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Beat that!

The woman down the hall owns John Lennon's dentures (partial plate).

Aimless The Unlogged, Monday, 6 September 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Sade is on my current street. My next-door neighbor is Kather1ne Hamnet (some fashion designer I don't really know about), Dido lives just across the little park at the top of my street, and Nick Hornby is on the road behind mine.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 6 September 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

but yeah, thread PWNED by markelby...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 6 September 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you in Holloway, Rob?

Who does Markelby live near?

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 6 September 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to live in the same block of flats as Busted, Girls Aloud, and V.
Sadly I never wandered over to Chez Busted and asked if I could borrow a cup of sugar.

Catty (Catty), Monday, 6 September 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

A downmarket tabloid reported this w/e that Charlotte Church is planning to buy a pub 60 seconds' walk from my house.

DJ Mencap0))), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose it's not fair for anyone other than Markelby to give away his secret, is it?

Alex from Frank Ferguson used to live round the corner, but apparently he's now defected to the West End.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Fran Healy, Bernard Butler, Louise Werner, Tim from the Office, John Simm, Vicky from Eastenders, the tall one from The League Of Gentlemen and ... Dominic Mohan all live in my area. Plus several people who have been in the Bill/ Casualty etc.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

No-one famous actually lives on my street but I reckon I'm rarely more than a few miles away from Fred Dinenage.

Simon Armitage used to live round the corner when he was a student.

robster (robster), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Wooden - close, I'm in Highbury

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha Anna you also live near the Irish Comic. Who was at the book launch Ed and I went to last week. Looking a lot less like Bryan Ferry and a lot more like Alfred E. Neuman but the encounter was very amusing.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the thread title as "The woman from T'Pau lives on in my mind", and I thought "yeah, me too..."

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Liz Cocteaus uses the same local supermarket as me (and so apparently lives very near) and Grant from Massive Attack lives just up the street (behind said supermarket).

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

My sister's flat used to be bang opposite that of Mr Bennett from Take Hart. Earth-shattering I know.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The bloke who used to present "In bed with me dinner" on late-night ITV c. mid 90s lives somewhere near me. Dead glitzy round my way I can tell you.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Darren Hayman walks his dog in the park behind our house, I'd kick his dog but he'd only go and write a song about it, and the world doesn't need any more Hefner songs

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The thought that me living next door to Simon Le Bon might be a secret is kinda laughable, since I tend to introduce myself to starngers with the words "Hi, I'm Mark, I live next door to Simon Le Bon".

What IS a secret is that I also live next door to former supermodel Yasmin le Bon. Who'd have thought it!?!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The drummer from China Drum lived a few doors down from us.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I know, that's pretty desperate, isn't it? Actually, I'm not sure if it was the drummer. One of them, anyway.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

cathy's dad used to live next door to carl howman.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ivor Cutler, Roland Gift, Jon Snow - all within hailing distance

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Wild Willy Barrett lived in a caravan at the stables where my mother goes riding.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and Sara Cox, but she's fucking crap

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Pashmina - I am intruged. I bet it will be Adam (drummer, brown hair, pretty huge, formerly bald)

___ (___), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, I don't know what she's like as a neighbour, but SC is actually pretty damn nice both socially and at work, if a bit scatty.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I just mean she's crap as in she has no talent

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

You must live well close to me, Dadaismus.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuffers?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep. Chetwynd Road.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That's two streets away from me, too. FAP at the Pineapple, anyone?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds good.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I live next door to a couple who argue alot, and have a loud phone.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

St. George's Avenue. The Pineapple? Where's that?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

suzy lives where we used to

Sade, Seal, Robert Elms, Finley Quaye and Nick Kent, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The Pineapple's on Leverton Street, parellel to Fortess Road. Lovely little pub.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Aren't the locals a little prickly?

*taxi*

___ (___), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, because it is currently being demolished apart from the listed facade, NOBODY lives in the Gray's Inn Buildings any more, anonymoose posting twat.

(watch out for that tosseur Rob Newman though)

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, it looks good that Pineapple place, funny place for a boozer tho

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Lovely pub, gets a bit full though. I like it so much I'm planning on moving a bit closer!*

*This is not the true reason for the move

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! I've managed to derail my own thread!

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the guy who was in the yellow pages advert (with the ransacked house) used to live downstairs from me. (and he used to listen to coldplay a lot)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

he once knocked on our door to borrow a hoover - it was very funny at the time.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, hold on, that means the woman from T'Pau lives near me too! Result!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

wooden, your best thread to date. tis all about tuffers

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, she just walked past. She's a pretty foxy older woman, actually. Her hair is a lot smaller.

xpost - Hi Lukey

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete Townshend, Jane Horrocks, Robin Guthrie, Ian Broudie, Trevor Bayliss (he invented the wind-up radio), Jason Leonard, Greg Dyke, Ron Wood

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I live near... no one.

(One of my friends was on the verge of living around the corner from Bennifer before they broke up, though. He also lives down the street from contemporary composer John Harbison.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I am told that Danny Baker lives near me. And Laurence llewellyn Bowen used to, and Terry Waite definitely does, as I have sat next to him on the train.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

'Just Juice' was invented in my bedroom. Seriously.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd forgotten about the Waitemeister till Boyle mentioned him: yes, I have disembarked behind him and followed his unsteady bulk till he turned a corner.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

When I sat next to him, he took up 3/4 of the seat - his legs just wouldn't fit into the seat, so he had to have them on an angle.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I live next door to a couple who argue alot, and have a loud phone.

I live quite near Jarlr'mai. Well, I wouldn't call it living, exactly.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to live near (and was friends with / met once or twice the children of) both Larry Clark and the guitarist from Blue Oyster Cult. Son of BOC guy is the biggest right-wing neocon I ever met, though completely awesome and fun otherwise.

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

fifteen years pass...

The woman from T'Pau has spoken. This changes everything.

The Fields o' Fat Henry (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 July 2020 21:46 (five years ago)

I'm with Trevor (in the responses)

"I fucking sick of hearing people bitch about wearing a mask, try this for 13 hours a day on a ward where temperatures hit 30. Put ya mask on and shut the fuck up."

Maresn3st, Tuesday, 14 July 2020 21:56 (five years ago)

China In Your Hand was obv a very prescient prediction of Huawei turning it's surveillance on the UK through their cheap phones, she knows what she's talking about. Oh yeah she's a fan of Laurence Fox as well, so knows the score.

calzino, Tuesday, 14 July 2020 22:02 (five years ago)

About 20 yrs ago there was a mainstay of the popbitch messageboard called uncle_whuppity who lived on the same road as Carol Decker and would often post sightings of her. He'd also post plenty of rock-biz gossip, esp. from the late 70s/80s. It was only years later that I learned this poster was Vini Reilly.

fetter, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 09:52 (five years ago)

No way!

The Fields o' Fat Henry (Tom D.), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 10:05 (five years ago)

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 10:15 (five years ago)

haha!

Boris the Spreader (NickB), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 10:36 (five years ago)

did Vini Reilly start this thread?

calzino, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 10:37 (five years ago)

she confessed to Swells she was an SDP supporter in a late 80's NME interview. That explains a lot!

calzino, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 11:33 (five years ago)

I no longer live on the same road as the woman from T'Pau, by the way.

chap, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 11:57 (five years ago)

Who won the war of attrition, you or her?

Alba, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 12:00 (five years ago)

I'd like to say me as I didn't see her around for my last few years of living on that road.

chap, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 12:04 (five years ago)

No 80s pop stars on my current road as far as I know.

chap, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 12:05 (five years ago)

Did you live on the same road as Vini Reilly then? Or are you, in fact, Vini Reilly?

The Fields o' Fat Henry (Tom D.), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 12:06 (five years ago)

I had to look him up, so I'm definitely not him.

chap, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 12:09 (five years ago)

I used to live on the same road as Neil Arthur out of Blancmange.

Alba, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 12:22 (five years ago)

did he live on his ceiling?

calzino, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 12:37 (five years ago)

Kicking myself that I never thought to ask him this 38 years ago.

Alba, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 12:51 (five years ago)

what?! i remember uncle_whuppity but i must have missed his unmasking, genuinely reeling from this revelation

scampo, foggy and clegg (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 12:53 (five years ago)

xp

it would have been huge Lionel Richie lived on the same road!

calzino, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 12:59 (five years ago)

used to have an electrical supervisor who used to sing "oh what a feeling ...no trunking on the ceiling" . Just to remind us all high level trunking had to be fixed to the wall and not the ceiling!

calzino, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 13:02 (five years ago)

I did once see Carol Decker in her local pub The Lord Palmerston, Dartmouth Park. She was drinking a coffee and the temptation to walk past, point at the cup and ask "Is that china in your hand?" was mighty.

fetter, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 13:15 (five years ago)

No, Uncle Whuppity (RIP) was some guy who worked for Motörhead. Should I be amused that Motörhead autocorrects to include the umlaut?

Update: near neighbours to me are Diane ‘Philomena Chunk’ Morgan, Luella Bartley and David Sims, Gary Hume, Rupert Everett (his London place), Gok Wan, David Bailey, Alexei Sayle, woman who played Mary on Downton Abbey, and Maria McKee for part of the year. If Jonathan Harvey counts as famous, he is here too. Some of these have dogs and are nice neighbourly acquaintances as a result but Maria’s my actual friend. She has a lovely greyhound.

Dominic Cummings and wife lived nearby before they moved to Islington about five years ago. Maria’s housemate is a friend of his wife’s.

santa clause four (suzy), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 13:18 (five years ago)

lol i just have some guy from bread who lives round the corner

Boris the Spreader (NickB), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 13:21 (five years ago)

Ah yes, you are correct! But Vini has always lived in MCR.

santa clause four (suzy), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 14:47 (five years ago)

the sitcom not the band

Disappointing.

The Fields o' Fat Henry (Tom D.), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 16:56 (five years ago)

Jools Holland used to drink in my local, it was terrible.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 17:00 (five years ago)

Certainly news to me that Vino (leaving that) Reilly lived in Tufnel Park. Fake news apparently. I had cause to know that CD did but that's not my fault. Not so long ago I got on a C11 at Parliament Hill Fields with the Boosh fella and Julia whatsername.

All Diacritics Love Ü (Noel Emits), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 17:07 (five years ago)

I did once see Carol Decker in her local pub The Lord Palmerston, Dartmouth Park.

Yeah that was on the end of my old road.

chap, Wednesday, 15 July 2020 18:25 (five years ago)

my takeaway from this thread is that the lead singer of T'Pau is everywhere

shout-out to his family (DJP), Wednesday, 15 July 2020 19:20 (five years ago)
