Another itunes problem

Recently this message has been popping up with alarming frequency:

"The itunes music library file cannot be saved because an uknown error occured (-50)"

I don't actually lose any files or anything, but it's extremely annoying. Is it something nasty I caught on Limewire? Is God punishing me for my wicked file sharing ways?

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:16 (twenty years ago)

What OS are you runnig?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:21 (twenty years ago)

OSX.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:23 (twenty years ago)

your hard drive isn't full is it?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:24 (twenty years ago)

runrig?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Repair the hard drive's permissions in Disk Utility.

(this is my standard advice, one up from "have you tried rebooting?" but it does often do the trick)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Where's Disk Utility? I don't know much about my computer.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago)

/Applications/Utilities

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:28 (twenty years ago)

No, that doesn't seem to have done it. And my hard drive is far from full. Thanks a lot for your help, anyway. I think I'll try leaving itunes alone for a few days.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Use the Apple System Profiler and check the console/system logs. See if you can watch the error taking place from there.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:40 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand permissions and why they need to be repaired, but Apple users seem to do it an awful lot.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 13:45 (twenty years ago)

It's just unix futzing.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I just tried to empty the trash and I got a similar message. This is pretty fucked up. I'm going to get someone to come and take a look at it. Thanks everyone.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Hmm...have you tried the daily, weekly, and monthly sudo functions? (You can do this also with MacJanitor.)

Have you forced prebinding? (Terminal program, then type sudo update_prebinding -root / -force)

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago)

I've only had to repair permissions once or twice.

That's not permissions, that's your filesystem and pointers all blown to hell. Definitely take it in to the shop. That sucks.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:20 (twenty years ago)

This is all a bit over my head, I'm afraid. It's cool, my cousin's going to come round tomorrow and he knows his stuff.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Permissions are what one of the main things that stops malicious invasion of your Mac. Each file has an owner and a group. Permissions are set as owner group and everyone else; read, write and execute. Permission are what windows doesn't do properly and what makes it so bloody insecure. they need tidying up now and again though.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:25 (twenty years ago)

My mac's never needed them repaired in that nothing has ever stopped working, Mark. But after a crash or power cut, things sometimes act a bit funny or slow down, and running the repair utility seems to sort it out.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:27 (twenty years ago)

What does the permissions repair utility refer to as a baseline? Does it just have general guidelines per what is rwxrwxrwx by root and what is for the home user or does nobody really know what goes on?

It sounds like Wooden's problem is beyond that, though, because of the trash thing. I dunno, I am too lazy to google a -50 error today and have decided I no longer care about anything to do with Unix until I get a new G5 iMac with Tiger.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Just for reference - it's generally considered "good" to repair permissions especially both right before and right after installing any programs.

It's a preventative maintenance thing, which is probably why it's too widely disregarded. Also, I highly recommend MacJanitor if you have a laptop, b/c OS X is programmed to run those functions in the background around 4 AM, but it can't do that when it's asleep. Again, just good to stay ahead of things.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:37 (twenty years ago)

And since I've been saying it so much, here's the MacJanitor homepage (it's free).

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:38 (twenty years ago)

-50 sounds disky to me. Try a disk repair.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago)

I've asked before, but how do I change the permission of a file? I want to change my link cursor in safari, but can't change it as it's system/library

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:48 (twenty years ago)

do you have any skins, extensions, anything like that installed? that could be screwing up something. in fact, i bet if you do... i can almost guarentee it is.

seahorse genius (seahorse genius), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 14:52 (twenty years ago)

In the Terminal window
sudo chmod 777 filepath

warning this will give full read write execute permsiins to everyone

you'll have to give your password

you could always copy the ne file in using

sudo cp source-filepath destination-filepath

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

why can't we use TT tags?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

How does he then turn it back?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:04 (twenty years ago)

can't Dave just Get Info on the file, and change the permission via pulldown menus from there?

haha Ed i guess TT tags are a secuirty hole. who knew?

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:05 (twenty years ago)

--- 0
--x 1
-w- 2
-wx 3
r-- 4
r-x 5
rw- 6
rwx 7

then repat as for user group everyone

so chmod 345 will give you
-wxr--r-x

I may ahve got that back areswards but its broadly correct.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:10 (twenty years ago)

yeah wtf no TT tags, I never noticed that. Lame!!! Moderators!!!

Tracer is right, after you sudo I'm pretty sure you can do the permissions from the GUI using Get Info. Much less annoying than trying to remember what order to put the damn numbers in.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:13 (twenty years ago)

oh oyu can I'd just forgotten not having had an OS X box for a while. Damned linux futzing my brain.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago)

I no longer understand a word of this thread.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Get info not working; I can see the current permission, but can't change them.

Using this, I can delete the relevant file, or rename it. But I can't add the new file into the folder, as the folder is locked too...

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Go to the folder you can't open, "cmd-I" to get info, click under "permissions", set yourself to the owner, and then have fun. Set the owner back to whatever it originally was when you're done. That way, you don't have to worry about chmod numbers.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:18 (twenty years ago)

try clicking the little lock icon, it should ask you for an admin user and password. thn you should be able to change permisisons.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Dave - why do you want to change your cursor icon, anyway? Are you come kind of ponce?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:35 (twenty years ago)

oh wow chmod i remember using that in university!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

4 = read 2= write 1 = execute and then you add them up to get combinations.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:39 (twenty years ago)

it's kind of binary with letters instead of ones innit.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Cursor - I think I may be a ponce. My normal cursor glows blue when it hovers over a link. Rock on!

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I MISS SUDO WTF

roxymuzak, Friday, 19 October 2007 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

In the Terminal window
sudo chmod 777 filepath

you could always copy the ne file in using

sudo cp source-filepath destination-filepath

this is my favorite poem ever to appear on ilx

J0hn D., Friday, 19 October 2007 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

four weeks pass...

How come itunes refuses to parse some tracks with perfectly valid ID3 tags? (It loads them in but doesn't name or catalogue them properly).

ledge, Sunday, 18 November 2007 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

ID3 v1

ledge, Sunday, 18 November 2007 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

I had a few tracks doing that a while ago. I used MP3 Rage (Mac program, sure there are good PC equivalents) to retag them and the problem went away.

Alba, Sunday, 18 November 2007 10:19 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, figured that'd be the case. Just hoping there might have been a hidden "Alright stop messin about and behave yerself" option in itunes.

http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ did the job nicely.

ledge, Sunday, 18 November 2007 10:29 (seventeen years ago)

anybody know of any way to get rid of the 'ringtones' play list that was given with the last update? i don't have any ringtones, or even a cell phone, so it's kind of annoying that that play list is just sitting there. i like to keep my itunes app and mp3 tags really nice and tidy too, so.

andi, Sunday, 18 November 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

Go to prefs/general. Unselect show ringtones.

schwantz, Sunday, 18 November 2007 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, it's like the option to hide the play list is there, but the check box for it is faded and i can't deselect it. vexing.

andi, Sunday, 18 November 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

i opened up my i-tunes this morning and it said "please select library before continuing", and i selected the most "recent" one, which was from two months ago so half my music was gone. i erased it and just dragged all my music files from my computer to the itunes so i didn't actually lose music, but my playlists and streaming radio are missing. what the hell happened???

omar little, Monday, 19 November 2007 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

So, I've got my laptop plugged into my home stereo. When I'm playing music from iTunes, the speakers' bass response sounds like they are blown - all fuzzy and farty.

When I'm playing a CD through iTunes, through the same connection on the same laptop, the sound is fine. When I'm playing my iPod through the same connection, the sound is fine, whether or not the iPod is plugged in.

By process of elimination, I've determined that nothing is wrong with the speakers, the amp/tuner, or the connections. Anybody else having this problem?

B.L.A.M., Monday, 11 February 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

Got equaliser settings on?

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 11 February 2008 02:47 (seventeen years ago)

Where are they?

B.L.A.M., Monday, 11 February 2008 03:32 (seventeen years ago)

View --> Show Equalizer

Clay, Monday, 11 February 2008 03:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'll check it out.

B.L.A.M., Monday, 11 February 2008 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

The reason I'm asking is itunes distorts music if the equaliser is on. Long story.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 11 February 2008 04:05 (seventeen years ago)

Also maybe try with the "Sound Enhancer" off. Open options, then click on playback and uncheck sound enhancer. I think it pumps up the bass pretty high for laptop/computer speakers.

Clay, Monday, 11 February 2008 04:08 (seventeen years ago)

Ah yeah.

In a nutshell, itunes and ipods don't cope with any equaliser setting which increases the low end.

You can run mp3gain/aacgain over your files to reduce the internal volume setting and almost completely eliminate the distortion. If this is your current problem, of course.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 11 February 2008 04:39 (seventeen years ago)

Problem solved - equalizer settings did the trick. Thanks, folks.

B.L.A.M., Monday, 11 February 2008 04:54 (seventeen years ago)

Now run all your files through mp3gain/aacgain and you can use the equaliser once again.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 11 February 2008 05:05 (seventeen years ago)

runrig
