At least those LJ "Am I a sassy emo boy?" ratings communities don't try to pretend they're doing the world a service.

LJ as everyone's said is more of a community thing. But it doesnt have to be, either. Ive noted with interest some people complaining of LJ spammers, trolls, stalkers etc. I have never had any such thing, and I think its because I keep to myself on LJ, have a small(ish) friends-list, and dont participate in any communities beyond reading a couple.
The people who sign up to and post to tons of buffy slash comms or somesuch are the ones who'll attract weirdos. And LJ sure has some weirdos.
A fine example - someone posted to sydneygothic community the other day and their default avatar was a woman being fucked by a dog. Someone else complained, and one reply to her? "I didnt notice it, I guess I must have a sense of humour".
Ugh.

I don't use LJ for emo personal stuff but the ephemerality of it - very rare to get comments even 1 day after posting - means I feel a lot less guilty about just posting "I ate a yoghurt" style no-content entries.
LJ is very dependent on vibe - at the weekends and on some days it feels really dead and becomes quite miserable to read. When everyone's online and commenting it's much more fun and firing.

Also you can do polls to count how many times you say MY HUMPS MY HUMPS MY HUMPS.

LJ posts are either public or friendsonly/private but if the former then you perhaps shouldn't feel like you're intruding as the author clearly wants anyone to read it.

I used to have a Livejournal too. I stopped using it, and I've never missed it.
