with all the london geeks on here, i thought i'd make sure you were aware of the ICA's mini-festival thingy

Also there's a retro-gaming thing on with the cex people this w/e!

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

festical? there i go thinking of uncle fester's testicles again.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

aw crap. links = swapped.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I need to go. I need to go. Need. To. Go. Who's going? I'm going.

Sarah, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I might be persuaded into going.

RickyT, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do you think they might have a JUPITER ACE???? I could put forward my CRASH COURSE IN FORTH skills!!! Um... oh I've forgotten it already! Chiz! I will study up tonight. You can get free tickets by mailing CeX so it says - I am thinking tonight I might just go and renew my ICA membership anyway DESPITE it being £25 re: my non student status curseth.

Sarah, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

day's membership's only UKP1.50 i think.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you are all swines for having kultchah down south. I will be in london on the w/e of the 23 so anyone up for kid606 people like us max tundra, (only if we can sneer at kid606, I like some of his music but when I saw him play live he was such a wanker).

Ed, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yas, it's not much, but I fancy renewing my membership so I can retreat to the wuvvly bar more often for lunchtime drinXoR. How pretentious! I'll have to buy some new books and sit in the corner by myself looking all twattish. I'll fit right in! Is it WRONG to drink cocktails by yourself for lunch? I say this because I very much doubt co-workers would come to ICA for lunchXoR. Although post-pub drinks could easily be moved from Silver Cross to ICA...

This is no geek’s gee-whizz festival; it’s a festival of what’s been done and what might be done in a digital life.

Methinks the ICA doth protest too much.

Sarah, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is that on the 23rd or 24th? I'm going to see Low and Piano Magic on the 24th, but I'd certainly be up for seeing ver Kid if he doesn't clash.

RickyT, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just checked, it's the 24th. Ah well, I can always bang some saucepangs about and pretend I'm rockin' the 606.

Sarah, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am not sure Low's audience will appreciate you clanging around like that at the back of the Union Chapel.

RickyT, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Have you never heard "Don't Understand"? They'll WUV it, if I do it in a suitably dark and intense manner.

Sarah, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think not. Someone screamed mid song at their last gig there and the audience turned as one to give the culprit disapproving looks.

RickyT, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the ica bar is great but somewhat dimisished by the removal of the 20p pooltable, it used to be my after school dingking haunt

Ed, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will be there probably doing my computer geek snobbery bit. Of course the Atari 2600 was always the choice of the plebian element MNAH!

DG, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait wait wait! What is this about MAX TUNDRA? And why has it not been mentioned on his announce mailing list? And will I be non-ill enough to go, and can I really afford to spend 40 quid just on the taxi home, and etc etc etc?

Retro-gaming thing sounds kind of fun but I can't really be bothered. I will cry if I miss those Memotech 8-bit computers that I used to play Toado on, though. Well, maybe not. This is probably one form of nostalgia best left in the mind.

PS have looked for my NES which I mentioned on another thread but can't remember which cupboard/attic/box I shoved it into in a mad tidying frenzy. Have a feeling it has only one game and may not even have a working controller, so it's somewhat rubbish. Will keep looking if anyone - Sarah? Alan? - is actually still interested but can't promise I'll find it in the near future, or indeed at all.

In case I have hidden my point with all this rambling, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT THIS MAX TUNDRA EVENT. Thank you.

Rebecca, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seriously, who's going? This can be the ILE uber-geek's meet-up.

DG, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oops, I have actually bothered to read the urls Alan posted now. Sorry. I thought the mini-festival thing was, er, I don't know what I thought but I didn't think it involved music events. *sheepish* Sorry. Carry on. I like Max Tundra but a Tundra live set would be more unmissable than a DJ set and I'm not that bothered about the other two acts (if only kid606 had sent Hrvatski over in his place...).

Not sure I want to go to any talks about computing, I went to ECTS 14 months ago in the hope of reviving my excitement in computing in a failed attempt to make myself want to finish my degree and spend the rest of my life staring at eyeball-destroying monitors (oh god I have 6 weeks to decide whether I want to carry on and probably fail or just drop out aaargh) and it, uh, Really Didn't Work. Zzz. No more Quake clones! Nooooo! And I didn't even get any exciting freebees, I thought I'd at least come home with a new mousemat and maybe a t- shirt but all I got was a biro, and I had to queue up for ten minutes and sign myself up to hundreds of junk mail lists just to get that.

Rebecca, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rebecca but you are a computer brain face!! Also I think this is more of a playing about with fun stuff than SERIOUS TORKES about THINGS. At least, I hope so chiz. But still, ICA BAR! Mmmmm.

Sarah, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah it'll be fun, and a good excuse for a meet. (talking about this w/e retro thingy). if track and field treats me nice on fri, i prob won't be going saturday :-), so my initial suggestion is sunday? just before noon?

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

on a similar thread to Rebecca, I found my megadrive at home this weekend, there are several games knocking around too, does anyone want it if bring it down at Christmas?

chris, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

rebecca: keep looking for that NES. there's a large round of drinks and a shiny sixpence in it for you.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh Cabbage, I'll take it off yers for swapsies of whatever you want probably involving lots of ale?

Sarah, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

FITE!

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Awwwwwwwwww! But if you get the NES (which I wanted first but NICELY let you have even though I am considerably poorer than YOU - trust me, I AM) then then awwwwwwww forget it *CRY*

Sarah, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yay i made a gurl cry. i'm so macho and grate.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So, DG and Alan, where were you on Sunday? Myself and THE EVAH SO CUTE RickyT turned up and had lots and lots of wuvvly gaming fun and I am now shaking and suffering Jetpac AND PANG! withdrawal symptons. Amstrads REALLY were crap, weren't they. The Intellivision too heh, nice concept but methinks DOOMED FROM START. Another thing that caused me far too much glee was PONG! and the fab wiggly controls which I had all forgotten about. It was brilliant and I WON at Pong I am the best. However I am still crap at Manic Miner this is not fair.

Sarah, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had skinted myself by Sunday and ended up having to borrow money off my grandparents to go see Chris TT last night. But it all sounds like the kind of exhibition that would have really pissed me off anyway, it sounds like "MANIC MINER EH? WHAT WERE WE THINKING!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?" So was it all ZX81s and relics from 1984 then? Or did they bother with the REALLY important stuff, like the Spectrum +2, the Amiga 500 the good old NES etc etc?

DG, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not at all like that DG, they didn't have any pretension with it, just a room of fab old consoles for people to play on. It was lots of fun! Yes, they had good ole NES (Mario), Master System 1 (Wonderboy 3), Megadrive (Streets of Rage 2), JAGUAR! (sung in Space Channel 5ive STYLEEE and also which no-one played), INtellivision, Amiga, Vectrex, Spectrum (can't remember which?), C64, Amstrad, Intellivision, two makes of Atari, some which I'd nevah even heard of before... all BLUDDY GRATE. Also the BAR serves a particularly nice GIN to calm ones nerves after shamelessly hogging PANG and Jetpac.

Sarah, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, then it sounds better than I thought then, though it would have been a bit pointless me going as I, er, own most of those systems already.

DG, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i had to work sunday but i did get there. must have been somewhere around 1-ish. ah well. i must admit i didn't stay too long as it wasw a little disappointing -- i already own all the stuff that i really liked. VECTREX roolz.

The 3d game boy thingy was fun. Commodore version of Manic Miner -- pah what rubbish. it's a SPECTRUM game and always was. *gibber* Maybe next time.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh except for the NES of course *wink*. i'd have nabbed it for longer if the old zelda game was playing. bloody mario.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm going to buy an old Jaguar, I want the original Aliens Vs Predator game.

DG, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So who was it that made the Jaguar then? I remember it but can't actually think of any salient points about it. Same as the Neo-Geo - I think there was one of those there too, actually? Sorry to have missed you Alan, I think you must have left just before I arrived! Was just looking at the CEX website but can't find their retro gaming section: I must check this out tomorrow!

Sarah, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"So who was it that made the Jaguar then?" ATARI, you silly beast.

DG, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jaguar = Made by Atari, first 64-bit console (but most ofthe games were cheap SNES ports (or worse), so everyone thought it was rubbish).

DG: Jaguar Alien vs Predator was one of the best games for it. You can have mine (with CD drive, sans AvP) if I can dig it out from my brother's bedroom floor (if you don't mind it being no doubt by now covered in cigarette burns and hash).

Graham, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Atari, I thought so! I remembered it as being a bit of a larff, Atari make this super new advanced thing but it WILL NEVAH WURK. I admit to now being extremely tantalised by the thought of playing CIVILISATION. My admission that I had never played it caused SHOCK HORROR over the course of several GINS. Aliens V Predators = vvv scary, no?

Sarah, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aliens Vs Predator = Eek!
Don't talk to LC about the things from Alien though, she'll get all excited and start gibbering about the 'marauding phallus' or something. I think she's talking about her boyfriend.

DG, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So Graham, can I have your Jaguar then?

DG, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)
