inspired by recent viewing of hannah and her sisters, which does both

i guess a lot of movies end in weddings, let's not count those!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(except for the godfather, which STARTS at a wedding)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't really know why i started this thread!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

we can change it to "great party scenes in movies" if you guys like. "shampoo" is my first pick

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't The Rules of Attraction start and end at the same party?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

or we could change it to "movies that you use to start or end a party" (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

or "movies that make you want to party"! i pick revenge of the nerds!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Starting with parties seems like it would be a good expositional trick, in that you can present a great many characters and relationships within the context of one setting.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

or "movies endorsed by The Party"

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

dazed and confused, maybe?

kephm, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

xxp--yeah, the danger though is introducing too much too quickly!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, the mission to mars bbq!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i should have an annual mission to mars bbq

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Dazed and Confused ends the morning after.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

How does 24 Hour Party People start?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The Party

briania (briania), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Scream

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

milo, it starts with the hand-gliding scene (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i know there is a bill murray one. i'm a big help

kephm, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

doesn't scream start with the drew-barrymore-alone-in-the-house scene?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a shitload of 80s movies that end in a big party (once the community centre has been saved or whatev)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't it end at the lock-in party?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(unless you meant the end of scream, which i don't remember) (RELEVANT XPOST)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason I have this vague notion that a great big bunch of 80s teen movies ended at big parties with everything being A OK, but I can't seem to think of any specific ones.

xpost!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the beginning of Blade is better than the beginning of anything mentioned so far

jones (actual), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The party has been abandoned to look at some dead body on the football field (I think)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't Hardly Wait and Dazed & Confused both almost entirely take place at a party.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

you're mixing up dazed and confused with stand by me milo

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

That was about Scream.

This is tough, actually, because so many movies finish the party, and then continue on another ten minutes for the conclusion.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only seen the party scene in Scream. Rose MacGowan's character isn't the brightest bulb on the tree.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't When Harry Met Sally end at a party? Or when they finally get together, it's at a party at least.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the end of reservoir dogs-that is sort of like a party, right?

kephm, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

This is kinda off on a tangent, but has anybody else noticed that, in Pulp Fiction, when Sam Jackson & The Travolta call up Harvey Keitel As The Wolf to come help them with their dead exploded face dude problem, Harvey Keitel As The Wolf is at a dinner party at EIGHT IN THE MORNING!?! Is there a reason for this? Or was Quentin smoking the good shit?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I fell asleep watching Dazed & Confused at a party this past weekend.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Mulholland Dr. end with the H'wood party where the brunette is marrying the director?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

no

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

How about movies that end at PROM -- lots of these, right? (Pretty in Pink, Carrie, Saved!)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i think metropolitan starts with getting ready for a party. does that count? (i'm pretty sure the party comes soon after that.)

youn, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

nick:
That scene in Pulp Fiction could be a wedding situation or a rich-folks-up-all-night-on-speed function. Whichever, Q was certainly obsessed with the morning concept in that film. Except for the date and the fight, the entire film takes place in the early morning.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

the leopard!!!!

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ARGH WHERE WHERE?!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

doesn't Keitel's character actually mention something about coming from a dinner party, though?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe it was one of those 37-course meals like in that new yorker article

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i've heard a 'gambling' theory for harvey being up at 8 with other well-dressed people.

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"the anniversary party"

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

you know, i don't know if you're supposed to quote or italicize movie titles.

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

you can do either.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ALA sez ital, ILX sez do whatcha gotta do my wild sweet love

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I always learned that you italicize (or underline) the titles of long works like movies, TV shows, novels, albums -- and you put in quotes the titles of shorter works like TV episodes, short stories, and songs.

But sometimes I'm too lazy to italicize on ILX, so I put 'em in quotes.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

PF xpost:
Aren't there well-dressed socialite-looking teenage girls in the background while Keitel is on the phone?
Maybe he drove in from a loophole -- he does defy laws of time getting to the next scene.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not as annoying a continuity flub as when the bullets are visible in the wall behind Jackson and Travolta's heads before the one dude even shoots.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

'yi-yi' starts at a wedding.

cºzen (Cozen), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Weird Science" - the climactic scene is at a party.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Back to School" starts at a party, I think. Can't remember if it ends at one.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

conan the barbarian has some good parties.

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the The Wolf was at a illicit casino type thing.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

fookin Return of the Jedi ends with that wack Ewok party.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

the party in teenwolf certainly a personal watermark, ie my first exposure to "bitchy california blonde vs hip brunette friend" hegemony in film.

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i wrote a script for a movie that ends at a party

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

was it "bachelor party" fan fiction?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"bachelor party" didn't end at a party!!!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

no, but the fan fiction would!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Until The End Of The World starts at a party

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Empire Records" ends with that fundraising party in the store with the band on the roof.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

triumph of the will end with a party!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

O Lucky Man! ends with a big party

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The final scene in "The Hunger" takes place in a dreamy, surreally sedate cocktail party, intercut with sounds of Susan Sarrandon screaming from within her undead tomb.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

That was one weirdass film. In a good way (O Lucky Man I mean).

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The Poseidon Adventure starts at a party. There's probably a whole slew of movies that start on New Year's Eve.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

or more likely, end on new year's eve, with all its attendant symbolism

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 September 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah you can get a lot of mileage out of those champagne flutes

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 9 September 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

briania, the film The Party doesn't start or end at a party. Although I think it's mention in this thread is warranted.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 9 September 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the beginning of the party is fucking hilarious

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 9 September 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I could be wrong, but doesn't "Can't Buy Me Love" end at a party?

Oh no, I think it ends with him mowing a lawn. But the climax is at a party.

supercub, Thursday, 9 September 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the beginning of the party is fucking hilarious

The whole film is hysterically funny. One of my favourite comedies.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 9 September 2004 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The party in "Die Hard" is almost at the beginning, I think.
"Breakfast at Tiffany's" starts with leaving a party.
"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" starts at a club, which is kind of like a party, what with all the tuxes and dancing.
And "Aliens" starts with Ripley's senior prom, where her date gets drunk and makes out with the head cheerleader, so then Ripley steals the keys to his corvette and goes joyriding.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 9 September 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

WEEKEND AT BERNIES! And possibly 2...?

Craig Gilchrist, Thursday, 9 September 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

'kicking and screaming' starts with max's graduation party...

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I recently described a friend's gig as having "that end of the film feeling." You know, where all the collected friends look on benevolently and everyone is dancing and pairing off. But I can't actually think of a single film that ends like that now.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(Maybe it's more of a TV thing?)

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)
