Any ideas? It's going to be a Saturday a'noon/night, remember.

Tom, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about Huddersfield town? I wouldn't have to travel very far that way...

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

London Zoo!

Nick, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Upstairs at the Newman Street Blue Posts? Downstairs at the Betsey?

RickyT, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hire out somewhere! Lot better than pubXoR which doesn't provide much scope for Christmas Party shennangings. Admittedly, I don't really want to shell out much COLD HARD CA$H MON£Y but somewhere different would be nice. And no, I have no idea, either. I expect it will be some BOOZY DIVE.

Sarah, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if hiring out, the Tup on Liverpool Road, Islington is really good for this kind of thing

gareth, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Somewhere w/ a pool table?

Andrew L, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I second Pool. Efy's snooker hall in Stoke Newington.

Nick, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mmm, whenever Xmas comes around pool is always the first thing that comes to my mind. Not alcohol, food, dancing, mistletoe, corniness etc. Oh no, pool.

What is wrong with you people?

Emma, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What is wrong with you people?

where to start?

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

much better to have somewhere where you can bring your own booze.

Ed, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or better yet, get pub to do cut-price deal on Statscock Juice, ie. the White Russian Milkshake.

suzy, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ed I think we should support the ailing hospitality industry in these harsh times. But not the ailing pool industry.

Emma, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was going to do anthony's mums eggnog recipe, and maybe a few round of vodka mojitos

Ed, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

THE LONDON TRANSPORT MUSEUM

katie, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The arches under St Pancras station

chris, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think repairing to the lahore curry house off the comercial rd could be an idea, best curry in london cheap and byob

Ed, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The space/time warp thing you're going to use so you can all step into it and come over to my house for the party. OF COURSE.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The problem with curry houses is that it's difficult to mingle - an issue with 15-20 people coming.

Tom, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Arrers! Arrers have to be an option.

I suggest we use my friend's parents' basement. Pool, arrers - there's even a fridge down there! Unfortunately we may have to kidnap the parents first.

Mark C, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The problem with curry houses is that it's difficult to mingle

Are you some kind of racist?

Nick, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Tom means unless they have a PARTY ROOM.

suzy, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Lahore is a five minute walk from the City Darts...

Madchen, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, the problem with sit-down restaurants of any kind is that it's difficult to mingle. I am some kind of racist, though.

My idea would be pub to meet in - on to booked restaurant (with PARTY ROOM) - pub/club/bar with cocktails.

Tom, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sounds good but amorphous space with home mixed drinks is good, and cheaper

Ed, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fair enough....but where?

Tom, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i would recommend anyplace where you can serve my GRANDMOTHERS homemade eggnogg.

anthony, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I go for amorphous space too. Too much temporal and physical structure = bad party.

RickyT, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Somewhere with a big garden, so that a bouncy castle can be hired.

james, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I luve bouncy castles. Can I come?

Samantha, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They won't give you a bouncy castle. They're cranky about giving them to big fat adults. Take it from someone who has tried many times.

Ronan, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A frat back in Berkeley rented one.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe it's just me then.

Ronan, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They don't lend them to big fat Irish guys. ;)

Samantha, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm dead slim. In fact I'm not even tall. I've lost some of my beer gut cos I drink vodka now instead. So maybe it's just Irish guys.

Ronan, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They're cranky about giving them to big fat adults

I was just quoting you there, not dissing your physique.

Samantha, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sure sure, I will now forever be self conscious about the size of my stomach and ass.

Ronan, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick D: "Are you some kind of racist?"

Best gag of the week.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ronan: "I've lost some of my beer gut cos I drink vodka now instead."

Does this work? Share your secrets, some of us have acquired a vodka gut. Bah. (I was going to try to revive my diet today but then ILE gave me chocolate cravings and the local newsy had special offers on Cadbury's stuff...)

I wrote too much on the "don't write too much" thread in an attempt to justify my rubbishness and emphasise the near worthlessness of my opinion. Sorry. Will write 500 lines. No, maybe it would be more helpful to think of 500 lines but make myself edit them down to 10 before writing them. Anyway.

Rebecca, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I am some kind of racist, though."

Care to expand on that, Tom?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A response to Nick's joke, Marcello. I'm not in any way a conscious or intentional racist. Almost certainly I have subconscious racist attitudes and beliefs - it's a matter of noticing them (or having them pointed out) and doing something about them. On a wider note, if someone accuses you of being prejudiced (and Nick wasn't, seriously, I assume), then you can often wrong-foot them by saying "Yes, I am, how can I change it?", forcing them to say something positive rather than have the argument they went to have.

Tom, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dunno. A vodka gut? Maybe I lose the gut cos the more I drink vodka the more eh vigorously I dance. Tomorrow however I shall be seeing David Holmes for free with free beer. Contacts are a wonderful thing.

Ronan, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fujiyama in Brixton has a party room where they approve of BOOZE (think you can bring yer own, not sure cos I've never actually been there) and the odd smokes if people are inclined that way, not that I am but I remember certain chaps at picnic in sky indulging - also many nice booZoRs nearby for arrers, party games, wuvvy cocktails at the (eesh) Living Room or... Prince Albert or even DOGSTAR and ahem, I live near there, you know.... rah SW9!

Sarah, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes, but its in south london

gareth, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

good point Gareth, well made

chris, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We regularly hire bouncy castles here for big fat adults. Huzzah!

If I thought we'd get up to fifty people I'd let you use my bar, but I'd need proper warning.

Pete, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

50 people seems well unlikely to be honest. 20-30 probably.

Tom, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best things come from SW9!

Sarah, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ALSO I THINK THE BOUNCY CASTLES THING IS ESSENTIAL. I am willing to stump up cash. Let's. OOhhhhhh.

Sarah, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think you should all come to Scotland. ILE has gone London-ist!

alext, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would say sheffield because it is the centre of everything

Ed, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bouncy Castles: No. South London: Yes!!!

rosemary, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bouncy castles: yes. south london: no

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BC: yes SL: yes

Mark C, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

actually i've just realised i don't count Brixton as south london as it has tube stop. it's an honorary "north london" place. *ducks*

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

alan, you are a perpetrator of nonsense (in regard to brixton being honorary north london). dude, don't even go there. its got to have an N postcode

gareth, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

or E/EC

gareth, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

N postcodes = RUBBIDGE! S postcodes (specially SW but honorary mentions for SE11, SE5 and SE1) rock the house!

Sarah, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

another FITE! there's something in the air, must be

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

east east east London. as they sing down at the Boleyn.

chris, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SE isn't that bad, it has SE10 which is allright.

SWs only plus point is that it isn't W. they're the worst, they're evil (sorry Jel/K-reg)

gareth, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A W11 postcode goes a long way on the other side of the atlantic, further than the receptionist's bin at least.

K-reg, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i've been in proper west london for a good couple of months or so now, and can i just say it suXoR. me move back to Queen's Park or W Hampstead asap.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

West Hampstead is in middle of nowhere - overground station. No, West London is the way to go. More to do! W12! (I remember when Janet Ellis used to say the W12 BBC address on 'Jigsaw' - god I love her... and her daughter...)

Will, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

King's Cross. That alley off of York Way with the burnt-out car that the ho's use as a makeshift hotel room. PS they're not really enjoying it, they're just moving around so much because of all the syringes sticking out of the back seat. Caledonia Road is going to be the centre of the cultural universe soon and it's all down to me.

dave q, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will=bad taste in girls;)

most of NW is no better than W

gareth, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

chiswick is too bloody quiet. and there's no corner shops selling lovely lebanese food, and and... *whine*

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

W3,W5,W13,W7...I would love it if was held in good old West London.

james, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NO!

N1, N5, N4, N7, N16, EC1, EC2, E1, E2, E8, E5!

gareth, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gareth, don't make me smack you around for dissing my beloved NW!

Give me NW6 or NW3 or even NW1 or give me... fuck, just give me a flat. Someone. Anywhere? I'm not picky any more.

Ugly Wife, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*sniff* no one loves Ealing *sob*

james, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ealing is great!

How about the middle of London?

Magnus, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I THINK WE SHOULD HIRE A BOAT AND GO ALONG THE THAMES therefore enjoying MULTIPLE postcodes!!!! How's about that! Although probably not many N ones hah hah unless we are all in many rubber dinghies and go along TRIBUTARIES.

Sarah, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Boat parties are GRRRRRRREAT!!! But very expensive around Xmas. Last one I was on cost £12 or something, so although very good idea, out of reach of most posters. Tho it makes drunken architecture student VERY HAPPY to be able to see the Thames Barrier up close and personal.

Ugly Wife, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

alternatively we could split the venue between two sites and get a boat at half time. that could kill the mood and sober us up, but it's a thought.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We could ride the Greenwich (or is it Woolwich) ferry with LOTS OF BOTTLES OF VODKA! It is free and a boat! And we could drink so much we VOM off the sides COOL.

Sarah, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Grants or Vladivar, of course.

Sarah, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sarah = mentalist of the day, though from her madness springs an intriguing idea.

DG, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"east east east London. as they sing down at the Boleyn."

Yeah, that and "Stamford Bridge is falling down".

Trevor, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

YES! Hold the ILE party on a boat travelling the entire length of the Thames and stopping at every pub en route. I will see you at the Rose Revived or the pub opposite it at Newbridge, Oxon, or the Trout in Lechlade, Glos. (Actually probably Radcot and Tadpole Bridge are closer to my house than Newbridge but I can't remember what the pubs there are called.) Yay!

Rebecca / Upper Thames massif, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn, if I was still living in Gravesend I could meet up with you just before you go out to sea. I'm glad I'm not, though.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh my stars! Am glad to see that gay Boogie Boat suggestion has gone down a right royal storm as per Our Gracie at the Portland Bill Empire in 1931 ooh I was there not throwing pennies pence astage as was Tesseract O'Shea supporting the act and our Gracie threw a wobbly thus no coins.

All aboard the Boat Bonanza which is first-rate class of first for standing out in freezing cold open and doing Fool Monty routine but I must say is most unpatriotic as Monty was not fool ooh I say he regarded me as most presentable in my youthful youth mark you I wouldn't have minded but as am former Navy man must haul aboard deserters running rat and tail of my nine cats!

Helm hard aboard stavast! Forsooth to Xmas Boogie Boat Heaven!

Sounds of now from that there Northern Dance Orchestra ooh very modern style you've never heard the Loss Joe band with father of Costello Elvis Presley none other singing See Emily Play dance band fashion.

But one hopes to see all you fair maidens and fairer lads bopping and a hopping afloat to my generous selection of groovy 45s by Tremelo and Gerry Pacemaking as are new modern lads am reliably told.

Wally Klemmer, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well? wtf is going on then????
