The Timothy Carey of her generation. A pint-sized powerhouse filled with the discontent of an era. The Lung Leg of my youth. Wait, Lung Leg was the Lung Leg of my youth. Well, then the Lung Leg of my even earlier youth. Never duplicated, and imitated at your peril. Jackie Earl Haley's only rival for the coveted prize of Most Pissed-Off Foul Mouth -Late 70's/Early 80's Division. The film festival would be glorious.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

how did she manage that chicago street-urchin accent in days of heaven?

amateur!!st, Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Her voice is sampled in the first song on that Primal Scream record, XTRMN8R. The one that goes, "This is Gorgeous, signing off..."

dan (dan), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think she just had a street-urchin voice. her accent is pretty consistent from film to film. She must have grown up in Brooklyn.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

awesome. she sounds like the spawn of several generations of inbreeding actually. it's kind of scary-thrilling when she's puffing on a cigarette in days of heaven.

amateur!!st, Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Every film I've seen her in is either excellent or extremely watchable.

Crap Bootie, Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa she was actually 16 or 17 when days of heaven was filmed that makes a lot of sense. but she really looks like she's 12.

amateur!!st, Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Out of the Blue" is one of the most punk rock movies of all time. It is so disturbing, still.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

she was the giant Baldy Terror's girlfriend in the Wanderers.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i feel a bit better for having weird confused feelings now that i know she was 17

amateur!!st, Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

oops did i post that?

amateur!!st, Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish i could go back in time and stop myself from making that lame joke

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the scene in Days of Heaven where she's plucking the feathers from the chicken...now that's moviemaking.

someone tell me about out of the blue

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

dennis hopper directed it. mom is a waitress. hopper is the drunk dad who goes to jail for hitting a school bus with his truck. little linda wants to be punk rock. dad gets out of jail and he goes a little nuts. there are some great scenes. the ending is pretty creepy. linda steals the show though. especially the part where she runs away to the big city to hang out with punk rockers.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the last shot of days of heaven lasts 66 seconds by my watch.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the earlier scene of linda and her friend (whose name is ????) walking through the wheat field comprises one unbroken handheld take of 50/51 seconds (!!), an insert of 4/5 seconds, and a concluding shot (same as the first in style) of about 10/11 seconds.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

c'mon dudes give it up yo

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 4 October 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Awesome. I would like to see Days of Heaven again. It has been some time.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 October 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

How did we get this far without discussing Gummo? I just remember her feeding her kid (that little Johnny Rotten lookalike) spaghetti in the bathtub and washing his hair.
Doesn't she also tapdance a little or something?

Gummo once totally disgusted a Cronenberg fan of my acquiantance....

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 4 October 2004 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

(I also own Out of the Blue on VHS. I think I sat all the way through it exactly once. Very dull, as I recall.)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 4 October 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Out Of The Blue! And Gummo. She was, of course, my favorite thing about Gummo. Actually, that whole scene where the little kid starts working out to Madonna and then Linda shows up is my favorite scene.

I have a copy of the Anchor Bay Out of The Blue DVD (the only official release, IIRC) somewhere. In the extras, we see that Hopper's heavy friends were throwing in helping hands for his comeback: Jack Nicholson did a testimonial for the radio ads, and the appearance of "My My, Hey Hey" is heavily touted (again IIRC, Neil Young basically gave him the song for no or little fee for the film).

My favorite scene in Out of the Blue (and one of my favorites ever) is when Linda Manz goes to the punk show and is brought on stage to play with the band. It's the ultimate music as a life raft scene, her life unbearable, but just for those couple minutes, perfect. pic.twitter.com/Renfuy7vdt

The tapdance scene from Gummo is one of my most favorite things ever put to film.

three years pass...

Recommended some friends in another city go see Out of The Blue in rep last night. Immediately after it's over I get a "Jesus Christ, man..." text. I check the Wiki plot page, and holy shit I somehow memoryholed how hard that movie goes down to just "Linda Manz Sad Punk Rocker."
