So, what. It was about the time of "How To Make An American Quilt" that the legend began to fade. Or did she? Can "Heathers," "Reality Bites" and "Roxy Carmichael" make up for the OTHER eight years of... crap... and secure her place in the greasy-faced Pop-teen-hall-of-fame?

JM, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She's not a Heather. She's a Veronica.

JM, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She was okay in Beetlejuice...

Mark C, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

how did cher manage to give birth to winona rydah and christina ricci?

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Little Women (which my mother & cousin dragged me to) was actually quite good. The real betrayal was her performance in Night On Earth where I first realized that unless she's a pasty faced teen, she can't act at all. Nonetheless, she's still the most lovely actress in the industry. Reason enuf to see Girl, Interrupted.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Even Winonna couldn't save me from the incestuous mess that is Angelina Jolie. I was hoping she could, but she couldn't.

JM, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Winoona. She looks better with longer hiar.

james, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NO! Short hair = fabby.

DG, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Niet! Long hair = *swoon*

james, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Long hair!

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Er, I mean short hair! That's what I get for posting while tired.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ha ha! Freudian slip Sterling!

james, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's W-I-N-O-N-A. Someone once asked me what celebrities I found attractive. I said Winona, and the response was "Oh, isn't she that country singer?" ARGH.

Search: Beetlejuice, Heathers, Mermaids, Night On Earth, Roxy Carmichael, Girl Interrupted, Johnny Depp, short-haired Winona.

Destroy: Angelina Jolie, Dave Pirner, Matt Damon, cutesy articles about her and Gwyneth Paltrow, How To Make An American Quilt, her last two movies, long-haired Winona.

Justyn Dillingham, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Long hair.

Though her blonde wig in Edward Scissorhands looked like it was borrowed from Garth in Wayne's World.

DavidM, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: Great Balls of Fire, which despite the excreciable Quaid in the lead role has Ryder as a hot thirteen year old cousin. Aw yeah.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

her taste in rock stars sucks dave pirner, paul westerberg when he was like 80, ryan adams, etc...

keith, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She has THE most annoying accent ever. I cannot bear to listen to her. It was nice for there to be a semi-goth (i.e. very pale skin) looking famous chick in the 90's.

toraneko, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Welll, classic for Beetlejuice and Heathers innit? After that: whatever.

now for the haircuts. Long haired Winona in 'Heathers' = tasty; blond Winona in 'Edward Sisscorhands = utter dud; short-haired Winona in Alien 4 = totally cute android babe.

Omar, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Heathers long obscured the fact that she's just rubbish, consistently. As for the biologically impossibility of Cher giving birth to Winona and Christina, maybe so, but they sure are have spookily parallel careers: broadly representing the anti-teen heroine of their generation, but more specifically Beetlejuice/Addams Family, improbable long blonde hair starring opposite Johnny Depp in Tim Burton film (Edward Scissorhands/Sleepy Hollow), near unreleasable Satanic nonsense (Lost Souls/Bless This Child) and pet project mental health movie (Girl Interrupted/Prozac Nation). It also seems to be that just as Winona gave way to Christina as the vaguely gothy alterna-teen, so Christina has passed the mantle over to Thora Birch, which represents an intriguing march away from scrawniness.

Mark Morris, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

reality bites was a truely awful film I thought. It makes me want to drink to forget and some people I know have left cocktail glasses half full near me, but I know I cannot drink their alcohol. I might get some ghastly disease.

Menelaus Darcy, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ultimate proof of Winona's uselessness is to be found in Lost Souls - the least suspenseful anti-Christ movie ever made. She plays (shock surprise) goth girl in it.

Pete, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I meant Anti-Christ there, though wither the caps in that word?

Pete, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It might be more anti-christian if you lower-cased it.

JM, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
Short hair!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, shoulder-length anyway.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

she was allegedly buying clothing at American Rag SF just a few weeks ago, and one of the girls who worked there followed her outside and bummed a cigarette off her, just so she could touch the hand that once touched Johnny Depp. She sounded ashamed of herself, though.

Winonna: short hair.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like American Rag. Or at least, I don't like the one in LA.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

pet project mental health movie (Girl Interrupted/Prozac Nation)

what happened to the Prozac Nation film? The above post was from the end of 2001; has it been in the can for over two years? Is it horrible (yes, I'm sure of it)?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

well to answer myself, Miramax was supposed to put it out this fall, and didn't, for some reason. Gimli is in it, though.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

no he isn't, I got my Jonathan Rhys-es confused. Okay enough off topic crap from me.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Is she from Petaluma, Kyle?

A lot of great people seem to be from Petaluma.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

She's from Petaluma, she semi-got involved during the Paulie Klaas kidnapping case in Petaluma some years ago.

Leee Smith (Leee), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hp&cf=prev&id=1808405511&intl=us

- guess it's a straight-to-video release.

Winona w/ short-hair in Alien: Resurrection is as classic as she ever got.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

you've all seen this, right?

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 2 January 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I like CUTEY-SHORTY-WAVEY

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all about the WAVING FLIPS (what era was that - Mr. Deeds?)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 2 January 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I think at this point, Prozac Nation is most remarkable for featuring Christina Ricci's first nude scene. Though it is not in a sexual context. Erm, not that I'd know.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 2 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

That's odd. Go to g--ff's link and look at the picture under "MEDIUMY": apparently if you stretch out a picture of Winona, 70s kung fu movie-on-TV style, then she turns into Alyssa Milano.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 3 January 2004 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

short hair, and I continue to insist that latter-day Winona is infinitely hotter than early Winona.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 3 January 2004 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos OTM
