How will it be on September 11, 2024

Here we are on the eve of the three year anniversary of September 11th, and the inevitable shows on all the major networks and cable news channels are spluttering into overdrive between blow-by-blow timelines and/or roundtable squawk sessions about how it could've been prevented. Is this always gong to be the way? Will every September 11th from here on in be a day of exhuming the awful events and going over them again in grizzly detail?

My boss suggested that in ten, fifteen years time, "9/11 Day" might end up as some sort've half-assed "no sales tax" day or some other bank holiday sort've thing.

How do you see it happening?

For what it's worth, I do go through periods where I seek out images from the day to try to get my head around it.

Err... I was taken to task today by a New Yorker who claimed that "No American has ever at any point known the terror and insult of evil unless they were in Manhattan 9/11" to which I said "Bullshit!"

I don't know what this means, exactly, but I know that I fundamentally disagree with it.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 11 September 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmmm...that's odd, really. The people I encounter who are that up in arms about 9/11 tend to be people who don't live here. While life has inarguably changed forever, most of my fellow New Yorkers don't get all cheast-beaty about it. It's those hardline Republican asswipes from the Midwest (y'know, the same folks who abjectly despised New York liberal cityfolk on September 10, 2001) who still prattle on about it with fervor.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus Christ, James...that's completely crazy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"No American has ever at any point known the terror and insult of evil unless they were in Manhattan 9/11"

There's probably some folks in Washington DC who'd take GREAT exception to that comment too.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It was scarily rhetorical, and she said that those who wear Red Sox or I Hate the Yankees ballcaps were forgetting the spirit of 'brotherhood' brought about by the attack. Additionally, she is otherwise incredibly liberal, intelligent, and non-dogmatic.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Saturday, 11 September 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to see them say that to a Vet who was at Pearl Harbour.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 11 September 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

she said that those who wear Red Sox or I Hate the Yankees ballcaps were forgetting the spirit of 'brotherhood' brought about by the attack

She really needs to fuckin' relax. I'd also bet she's not even a native New Yorker. Am I right?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

For what it's worth, I live in New York, I was born in New York, and I hate the fuckin' Yankees too.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually - yes. She is, and she's out of the city for the first time in her life, so she's hyper-associating.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Saturday, 11 September 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, she still needs to put things in the proper perspective. Ridiculously heated sports rivalries have nothing whatsoever to do with a lack of national 'brotherhood'.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get why the sushi is on a conveyor belt?!?! wtf

Once again I find myself conflicted about my feelings. Is that ad offensive, clueless, hilarious, or all three?

Tonight at ten (kenan), Saturday, 11 September 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Or should I just relax and enjoy some frightenly inexpensive sushi?

Tonight at ten (kenan), Saturday, 11 September 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh, I just remembered. Sage Telecom, my long-distance service, is going to let me make free domestic long-distance phone calls for free all day today.

My grandmother, my sister, and my old college roomy. Put your number up here (HA) and I'll call you for free, too.

"No American has ever at any point known the terror and insult of evil unless they were in Manhattan 9/11" to which I said "Bullshit!"

this is so fantabulously wrong on every level, that i don't even know where to begin. and that this was said by a NEW YORKER ...

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 11 September 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just so....i don't know....elitist. It's a lamentable statement.

September 11, 2024

My mom will turn 73!

Yeah, she didn't get a chance to bitch about her 50th, as it would have been in extremely poor taste that day.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 September 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get why the sushi is on a conveyor belt?!?! wtf

The sushi is on a conveyor belt because that is how you order: you take it off the belt and eat it.

It obviates the need to do taxing things like open a menu, or order food from a human being. Behold the future!

The one place that I've been to, they were served on little tiny boats.

Kim Kimberly, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 14:19 (one year ago)

What's a 9/11?

There’s a Monster in my Vance (President Keyes), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 14:23 (one year ago)

Sage Telecom was sold to a hedge fund, I have unlimited long-distance calling now anyway, and Grandma died in 2009.

To answer the OP.

pplains, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 14:38 (one year ago)

Just the fact that everyone under the age of 25 has no personal memory of the 9/11 attacks and the great majority of those who can recall it have lived 23 years of life, family deaths, and newer traumas, means that the societal trauma of that day has inevitably faded. But there are still many hundreds of thousands of people for whom that trauma will always be fresh and they will appreciate the commemorations.

my partner's good friend is passing away soon because of a rare cancer she acquired in manhattan that day. the effects run long. that said, i'm not sure if commemorations are appreciated in this context. she was a child then

global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 16:46 (one year ago)

god that's awful... I've heard anecdotally that plenty of first responders ended up with chronic illnesses from everything they were exposed to in the aftermath

Gen Z son bought two souvenirs from NYC as we were leaving — a cheap Empire State license plate replica with his name on it and a 12-inch plastic replica of the Twin Towers.

"Why are you getting that one?" I asked.

He replied, "I dunno. 9/11."

first thing i saw on Insta yesterday morning was the photo of “The Falling Man” and i was really angry & upset about it

like, it’s become the Kim Phuc photo from Vietnam in the same way i guess maybe

for everyone else i mean

not for me

but even now that the coverage is minimal the heaviness just stays in the air like thunderstorm static

alright 2004 ilxors. the 9/11 memorial was yesterday. the former President of the United States, who you may know as the host of the Celebrity Apprentice...look, its a long story...anyway, he's there along with one of his top advisors, an insane Nazi who thinks 9/11 was an inside job. he's also currently running for President and just the day before did a debate where he bragged about his ability to work with the Taliban. people didn't really notice though since he also claimed that immigrants were going to eat your pets. which was an idea fed to him by the insane Nazi. it's a real problem for him if he doesn't win again because he was hit with 34 felonies and has 3 more criminal trials including attempting to overthrow the US government and stealing a bunch of classified documents to store in his private bathroom, for reasons nobody's figured out yet, though I will mention it's pretty well-accepted that Russia is actively trying to help him win. I guess we really did lose our minds after 9/11 LOL

Oh yeah and the guys you hate in the Bush White House are endorsing the Democrat in the race

There’s a Monster in my Vance (President Keyes), Friday, 13 September 2024 12:07 (one year ago)

My friend who was a middle-aged computer programmer/consultant who had never smoked got throat cancer after being forced by her employer to go back to work downtown after 9/11. Later after her chemo, radiation, and surgery, she said it was a type of cancer that only smokers get (per her doctors). She survives to this day <3
