With lots of grease.

Open and complete honest and apology. Nothing else will work, or if it does, you'll feel like a real arsehole. For a long time.

At university I made a name for myself through transparent and bloody- minded honesty. The lecturers didn't know what hit them when I'd roll out my "I'm really sorry, I haven't done the work" non-excuse for the half-dozenth time. I never once got in trouble.

"Hey guys what's up?"
"We had our presentation today"
"Oh my God! I thought it was tomorrow! You shoulda phoned me!!!"

Or you could try the "I'm really really sorry" approach, which would be better.

i got out of it beforehand by saying my grandfather had bee ntaken seriously ill, and i was going to have to drive my mother 400 miles to see him. presentations, although compulsory, never count in degrees, look, i know its bad, but there you go

gareth, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does it really matter that much? If I was a student I wouldn't care about a presenter not turning up and if I was a teacher then I'd be used to it. Or am I misunderstanding?

Nick, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they do care though, thats the worst of it. this carries on into work, where they try and force some kind of pseudofamily environment with endless drinks

gareth, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I did the same thing, in my Honors English class freshman year, back in the day (EIGHT YEARS AGO - sheesh). I never talked to anyone in that class again, and sheepishly took an F for the semester. After that, I didn't even bother going to class anymore.

DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU. Control the damage as soon as you can. Be forthright, contrite, & honest. That's more important than some stupid grade, in the long run. (Of course, so's curbing your sleeping habits.)

David Raposa, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my thought was to never go again but it's pass or take it over.screw it..if ned says with lots of grease then grease it is! but really thanks for the ideas..honesty is going to be the only way. but i am so confused as to how i slept for 13.5 hours AND have no memory of turning off my alarms. grr.

kevin enas, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kevin 13.5 hours = it is gonna be hard to sell this to friends/lecturers !

that is like going to bed at 1.00am and waking up 2.30pm !

If the presentation was say at 9.30 and you turned by at 10.30 - then I can understand!

by the way what time was the presentation!

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kevin, I have done the very same thing many, many, many times. Out of whack sleep schedule + shoddy diet + lack of exercise (+ emotional duress, which is optional) = fun morning-after-type times with Mr. Snooze Bar.

If this is a pattern, you need to kibbosh that ASAP.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

went to sleep at 10pm and i was going to get up at 6 to prepare etc. and woke up about 11:30am

kevin enas, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

where's the tower? wheres the gun? (via bill hicks)

Geoff, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

From someone who's been there himself, Kevin, apologize profusely, be honest, and take yer lumps. It sucks, you're probably not going to like the gradeyou're most likely to get and oh yeah, get used to the new asshole you're gonna get torn, but don't compound it by lying, being belligerent, and/or never showing up again.

You'll survive. BUT WAKE UP ON TIME FROM NOW ON! :-)

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yikes, look at the time...

Kim, Wednesday, 14 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I meant it's getting late. I'd better hit the sack now before I pull a kevin and miss work. ;)
