Hey, weren't you Aimurchie?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 12 September 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi! I'm sorry I haven't called! How's the new place treating you?

Maria D. (Maria D.), Sunday, 12 September 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I outed myself. I was aimurchie. The new place is great. Nobody else has had to suffer through a Jack and Jill, apparently. Must be regional. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
Jack and Jills are pre-wedding parties for the couple. They involve raffles - actually, you pay a fee to go ($35.00 per couple - $20.00 for a singular) and then buy raffle tickets and hope to win a prize. This is a fundraiser for the couple, obviously. But...if one of the raffle prizes, donated by the brides dad, is round trip tickets to anywhere in the world that Delta flies, well...why the fundraiser?
It was crass, horrifying, expensive, and we didn't win anything. The "girls" started to do the macarena, and that was about it for me (us).
Am I alone in experiencing this experience?

I thought this was a thread about black debutantes!

I thought Jack and Jill parties were some kind of swinger/wifeswap thingy.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 September 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Why?!? Do black debutantes have jack and Jill parties? I am very much on a need to know basis.

I have heard of these sorts of showers though, although not under this name. I think they were called a "couples' shower" and were more like a reception that you bought tickets for. Wedding crap is out of control, one of my friends just went to a bridal gown-fitting party.

xp Jack and Jill is a social club sort of thing for black families: http://www.jack-and-jill.org/

Thanks for the info, teeny. I have attended the Jack and Jill, two bridal showers, and have the bachelorette coming up before the 10/8 wedding. I love this woman, but she is bridezilla at the moment. Do i recall seeing a rather calm and mellow nuptial thread re: you and mr. Teeny? Congrats, and congrats on being sane. Most aren't. (This bride majored in Women's Studies. Go figure).

aimurchie, Monday, 13 September 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

TWO bridal showers? Why? And a bachelorette? What in the devil is that, even?

Seriously, are these things naught more than an excuse for the bride to be a greedy fscker and just get loads of gifts?

I cant stand the hoo ha around "trad" weddings. Teeny, you totally did it the right way :D
