Waste of a question.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

a great talent, but not the passer of the ball he's hyped up to be. a truly horrific tackler. good close control.

the best striker of a moving ball in the premiership, maybe in europe.

safe to say a classic, i think.

nice quiet guy too, beckham and co could maybe learn a few things from him.

Darraghmac, Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud for most of Scotland due to Euro 2000 play-offs. Otherwise, a good quality player. Does he ever speak?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

People say he's boring but I don't think he is. I think he just doesn't care about being a star, which is different. I've heard reports that he is very witty with his mates. But then they said that about Alan Shearer.

As a player, I love him. He'll always be the little ginger Pelé to me.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

is scholes retirement going to be part of a trend towards the 'pre-emptive retirement'? ie. to cut down your games quota *before* footballing old age hits, even if you're not feeling the effects of it yet?

is this a fair enough action to take? i mean, i'm guessing you do feel fresher if you play less games, but is it silly to start taking action at 29? i thought his decision was fair enough, his call entirely, but i guess i would think differently if it was duff or given or some top irish player?

ginger pele is rooney, isn't it?

kilian, look at the state of a lot of ex-pros (like paul mcgrath. even keano is a shadow of his old physical self.

guys can hardly walk after throwin themselves about til their mid thirties for club and country. i think more players will head for spain or italy for the climate and the less frenetic game style.

what is the point of not being able to enjoy your millions cos you have rubber knees and plastic hips? i know what i'd do!

Darraghmac, Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Rooney may try to steal the crown, but my friends and I were singing 'He's the little ginger Pele' (to the tune of whatever WW2 film it is) as long ago as the 1998 World Cup qualifiers. He then proceeded to handle the ball and get away with it and became the little ginger Maradona for a while.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 12 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Today's Guardian says he's becoming merely a decorative player.

the bellefox, Monday, 13 September 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

He's not been terribly effective of late, but I expect he'll go on a run of like six goals in nine games or some such before long.

"I won't let the bookings situation bother me. It is just another game and another chance to get to a Champions League final. I don't think of it being more important to get through because of what happened to me last time. It still feels the same as the semi-final was in 1999. We all want to get there and we all want to win it if we do."

Wtf? Darraghmac in 2004?

Tiger City of Culture (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 2 December 2013 16:08 (eleven years ago)

^ just to clarify that slightly, so it doesn't look (quite so much) like the random shout of a madman - I thought hadn't Darragh burst onto the scene until several years later with the infamous 'jol out' campaign

Tiger City of Culture (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 2 December 2013 20:01 (eleven years ago)

ginger pele is rooney, isn't it?

I had assumed you were referring to this, which to me reads as a slightly awed and somewhat warm assessment of the then-youngster

Ismael Klata, Monday, 2 December 2013 20:29 (eleven years ago)

godammit, i just bumped the other thread

Number None, Monday, 2 December 2013 20:34 (eleven years ago)

It gets all the traffic. I figured it'd be more in keeping to use this unheralded thread that doesn't want any fuss.
