Hullo

We are doing a second club popular at the chapel, on Thursday 30th September (last working day of the month, for those of you paid then).

Free entry, ALL NUMBER ONES, ALL THE TIME. Remember cocktail happy hour is only 'til 7.30, so get down early :)

Look at baby alang DJ!!!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i recommend the chinese shop round the corner for their beef in black bean sauce rice noodles, but check teeth for black bean residue afterwards.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Baaaaaby Alang!

I will be there :)

Starry (hello chickens), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be there too, I imagine.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 13 September 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i knew we should've given flyers to girls aloud last week...

it's not impossible that there may be (former) real actual pop stars there (none of your indie rubbish, neither) though...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Aisling from The Reynolds Girls

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Guru Josh.

1990s! TIME FOR GURU!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

A lot of the big obvious #1 hits (esp. from the 90s) were avoided so I wonder if they will be aired this time

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

you talking about Come On Eileen perchance?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

amongst other things...not that i want to hear that song ever again particularly!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on eileen was not from the 90s?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, that was 1982.

The probable reason why a lot of the big obvious #1 hits from the '90s were avoided is that most of them tended to be gloopy, not very danceable ballads (i.e. Bryan Adams, Whitney, Celine, Wet Wet Wet, Singing Squaddies etc.) or not easily danceable Britpop stuff - you can't exactly bop to "All Around The World" or "Beetlebum." You'd be much better off doing an evening of #2 hits from the '90s as that lets in "Common People," "Music Sounds Better With You," "I'm Too Sexy," "Tubthumping," "Everybody In The Place" etc. etc.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Although of course the number one options still leave you with things like "3AM Eternal," "Dreamer," "Saturday Night," "Praise You," "Firestarter" and what have you.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it was a typo, i meant to write 80s

i played mostly 90s #1s at the last one - all excellent, but no Charles & Eddie

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

there needs to be aqua.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost)

Oh right, I see. Yes, the '80s weren't exactly a golden age for number ones but there was still plenty of good stuff.

Do the '70s get much of an airing at Club P? I've not yet been, but suspect that, although old codgers like me would enjoy a bit of '70s chart-topping stuff, the younger lot would get bored.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The 70s was pretty heavily represented last time, especially in the first half of the evening - Alan's set was very glam as I remember.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the '80s weren't exactly a golden age for number ones

it is true that this period was something of a desert for chart-topping pop excellence, with only Boris Gardiner, Goombay Dance Band, Fairground Attraction and The Bee Gees carrying the torch.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Well this is what I was thinking.

The production on that Bee Gees one ("You Win Again") is bloody weird, with a rhythm track that seems to have been constructed out of samples of roadworks on the M25. It's like the Gibb Brothers vs Test Dept. And you can't dance or smooch to it either.

And there's Nick Berry, Kelly Marie, Aneka and no less than THREE Jive Bunny number ones to choose from!

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I can confirm that I am not the person referred to by Steve (although I have played on a record that reached about number 108)

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That wouldn't be David Brent's cover of "If You Don't Know Me By Now" would it?

*goes off and checks video of Office Xmas special*

Oh no, that only managed number 113.

What was the record, PP?

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea of the name of the song (basically I rolled a pitchbender around on a keyboard for a mate when I was in Bournemouth, for the remixed b-side) and I'm hard-preessed to remember the name of the band, possibly cr0wforce or summat like that anyway, it was 11 years ago

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the 60s probably lost out more than the 70s last time, crtainly by the time people were dancing, perhaps (perhaps) because the 60s stuff is seen as more "rock canon"y than the bubblegum 70s stuff (this is only a hypothesis). or it might just be that slade/suzi quattro etc is more fun to dance to :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the greatest thing about Jive Bunny is that he pretty much rendered the 60s useless by taking all the best bits and cramming them into manageable chunks for Thatcherkids like me to digest. i have some good Ben Liebrand megamixes of 80s stuff too but he lacked the insight to make 3-4 minute sequences that would be chart-friendly and reach a wider audience.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i worry that i am too good at this game

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

OH MY GOD

chris i *have* that cr0wforce 12" ph34r me!

is this where is out you as the industrial-metal kid you've been all along????

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Do the '70s get much of an airing at Club P? I've not yet been, but suspect that, although old codgers like me would enjoy a bit of '70s chart-topping stuff, the younger lot would get bored.
This was largely the case. I got a couple of laydeez dancing to the 70s stuff. And possibly Kelly Marie. (playing her song, she wasn't one of the laydeez dancing.)

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

no, I just worked with a bloke in them. I think I spotted him at the last ATP but didn't go up in case I made an ass of myself and he didn't know me from adam, but Mark, if yr reading - hi!

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the 60s probably lost out more than the 70s last time, crtainly by the time people were dancing, perhaps (perhaps) because the 60s stuff is seen as more "rock canon"y than the bubblegum 70s stuff (this is only a hypothesis). or it might just be that slade/suzi quattro etc is more fun to dance to :)

-- CarsmileSteve (carsmilestev...), September 14th, 2004.

Probably because there isn't really an equivalent to glam or bubblegum when you look at '60s number ones (Dave Clark Five? The Monkees?), and by contemporary standards (rhythm, production etc.) it would all sound rather dated, ploddy and square to younger ears; there isn't an equivalent to, say, "Dancing Queen" or "I Will Survive" - the perennials that will always get people out on the floor. But you can still do the old boot-stomping to "Coz I Luv You" or "Devil Gate Drive."

Otherwise, put on "Get Down" by Gilbert O'Sullivan and pretend it's the Ben Folds Five!

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

so then, is there a feeling that Club Popular, as sound and enjoyable a concept as it is, may only have short term appeal/limited life span?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

why? loads of clubs do well playing the same songs over and over!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

as a "special" thing like once every few months it seems to be a fun idea.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, 1000+ number ones sounds like a heck of a lot of music, but then when you find that a lot of them simply don't work in particular club contexts (one would be a very brave DJ to step up and try doing a '50s set, for instance), then the possible options would rapidly exhaust themselves (it would probably be the same if you tried any Guilty Pleasures-type themed nights).

In the larger context of Club FT, then, I suspect you could probably do a Club Popular night every few months or so, but on a regular basis (i.e. monthly) it would indeed have a limited lifespan.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it's very strict afaik, so you can't play b-sides or remixes of #1 hits - double A sides are interesting, i assume one could play either. Robson & Jerome will be relieved.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Club Popular every couple of months is a good idea, and it wouldn't matter so much that we'd get repeats. Whereas with the closer together number of Club Freaky Triggers, it does actually matter that the same songs tend to get played - good songs yes, but they kind of did my head in last time I went (hello DJs I still like you though hello).

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

but it was those same songs that people dance to the most - oh curse yous twisted paradox

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but that doesn't mean there aren't other songs that'd make people dance ;)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

(by that i mean aqua, btw)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

hasn't rowley just started up a guilty pleasures night?

i think the idea would be to do it no more than quarterly, because then you can, to an extent, avoid the repitition type problems (or they aren't so noticeable anyway), and also vary it (#2s, american #1s etc).

that said, if someone came along and said "this is great, we will pay you handsomely to do this every week" i think we'd cravenly give in like the corporate whores we are ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Cr0wf0rce!!? Crikey. One of my friends got given an ep of theirs for his birthday back in 1993 and it became a kind of mathom, getting passed around most of our mutual circle of friends at every possible birthday opportunity. I wonder where it is now.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, turn it into a Champion's League style club where nos. 2, 3 and sometimes 4 are also allowed. But don't do it yet.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Ken is right. I think it's a case you have booze and you're used to playing song x and it goes down well so you do it again - and I've not complained cos I've happily enjoyed this for years innit. You know, maybe a *different* Andrew WK song, or you know?

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! Champions League Club Popular is a great idea - #s1-4 from the UK, Spain and Italy, only #1-2 from Germany and France and the occasional Greek and Turkish and Ukranian smash hit.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

(Haha good luck getting the full list of European Number 1s though)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Won't they all be the same? More or less.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, maybe a *different* Andrew WK song, or you know?

ha, except they all sound exactly the same...hasn't it been different the last few times, actually? i remember tom telling me he'd lost the cd or something?

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Great unknown joys and horrors lurk in the upper reaches of the Euro charts, I think.

It's been We Want Fun every time that I can remember, I think maybe it could be quietly retired by now though as there are other standards now vying for space at the end of the night.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

having knocked off early the last couple of ClubFTs i have missed the WK action, however i am in favour of a moratorium...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I also vote for "up west" - I got home at 2am! WHY WOULD THEY NOT THROW US OUT AT A CIVILISED TIME?? I am plum tuckered and have already succumbed to McDonalds sossidge/egg mcmuffing.

xpost: GENO! GENO! GENO!

Starry (hello chickens), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

um, the buggles TWICE? and cutting out before the little dreamy bit at the end both times? bah!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

We had Club FT up west last year! No one came except a surly looking bloke in a hat, and no once danced until the last three songs of the night.

Outhere Brothers got played twice as well, once by Trife and once in Steve's Boom Set.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone play Lena Martell (the only non-really-famous No.1 from 1979?)

Alba (Alba), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Club Popular is different from Club FT tho Matt

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

And how did Fern go down?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I am now thinking inappropriate thoughts about Fern Cotton.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean Fern Britton I bet

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

last night was great fun. especially getting to hear so many songs that i remember buying 12"s of on my trips to england when i was a young teen...

my routine post-chapel-bar grocery shopping was not as good. too much stuff out of stock, too many isles blocked, i forgot some things that i needed, and stupidly bought two boxes of some chocolate mousse cup thingys called "Gu", for no reason other than some dude in the line in front of me had FOUR boxes (they were two for £2.50). i had some of this brown Gu when i got home. it was OK.

the pinefox was surly, last night.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Surly doors

Jedermann sein eigener Fussball (Dada), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

whoever played "Rolling" played some crazy remix version that never got to no.1

ken c (ken c), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Remix sales count to chart positions, don't they?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i had my first banana in a year, last night, at sainsbury's.. i didn't even use the discount card in the end! :(

ken c (ken c), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope you bought cloves Rob

ooh was it the Urban Assault Vehicle mix of 'Rollin'?

i'd never heard that version of 'Pump Up The Volume' before either, but then there are 2186 different edits

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

that pump up the volume version was what i remember hearing on the radio in canadialand.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 1 October 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the Cher, Cabs.

from my office window i can see into the next office where they have a huge Spaceman poster on the wall (they do management). They also have various gold disks and Melissa Etheridge and Bryan Adams stuff.

(actually, this very moment he's practicing his golf swing. not the kind of thing you expect to see in an upstairs office)

koogs (koogs), Friday, 1 October 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

it was tremendous fun last night. i thought i wasn't going to be drunk but i ended up as being that.

The picture of the Pinefox and Sgs is magnificent.

Also there is pure love in that Barry/Charlton pic.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 1 October 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Great pics Ken. Good to see Martin made it out!

i wasn't sleeping. i was saving my energy for my request. and those couches are insanely comfortable.

sainsbury's was out of EVERYTHING, rob is right. i ended up buying oven chips and cooking them while watching the debates. not quite enough instant gratification for hangover food, really.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 1 October 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

dave, why have you so many pictures of me?

aw, did i scare you ken?

It's like Love actually

Andrew Voiceover (daveb), Friday, 1 October 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Two surprise highlights:

1) Meeting Billy Dods. Top yin, big mon. Doc, it's a pity you missed him.

2) Alastair MacLean appearing, out of nowhere, band not in tow, to debate chords for 2 hours with the cocktail fruits of his publishing deal.

the bellefox, Friday, 1 October 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It was a good night, and the Ethan/Minna DJ set was one of the best I've heard at any Club FT. Next month's special guest DJ (in that I only know for sure who one is, there may well be at least one more) will be a terrible let-down after that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

aw, don't be nasty about matt, martin ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(Matt is unsure he can do it, apparently, so he isn't the one, just in case anyone else thinks I meant him.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

What did ethan and minna play?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 2 October 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for making me feel welcome. It was great to be able to put faces to names at last.

Highlight of the night for me was a toss up between Mark Sinker's dancing and The Pinefox's Keef Richards impersonation.

I'm afraid I'm going to miss Martin's set at the next club night, but I'll try to get down again sometime. Hopefully sooner rather later, and next time I'll warn you Dr C.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 2 October 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ethan and Minna played:

Partners in Kryme - Turtle Power
Limp Bizkit - Rollin (or some remix of it at any rate)
2 Unlimited - No Limit
Xtina - Dirrty
Outhere Brothers - Boom Boom Boom
Eminem - The Real Slim Shady
Prodigy - Breathe
Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers - Swing The Mood
Enya - Orinoco Flow (!!!!!!!)
Puff Daddy and Faith Evans - I'll Be Missing You
Sugababes - Hole In The Head

And probably a load of stuff I've forgotten.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 2 October 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Was 'Breathe' number one? Cor.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Sunday, 3 October 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

what else other than 'Turtle Power' and 'Pump Up The Volume' has now been played at both Club Populars?

aw who cares

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Much that I heard at the club, I did not recognize as a #1 hit record.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

in terms of quality or in terms of memory?
