Cheap, Hip (Sexy?) Jeans that don't cost a bajillion dollars

So, I've done a lot of jeans shopping lately, and have been constantly horrified at how very low low-rise jeans can get. The ones I tried on yesterday only covered half my underwear, and no I wasn't wearing granny panties. Also, I'm not seeking out low rise jeans. I just want some kind of hip jeans that aren't as high up and baggy as the ones I have now. (Also, because I lost some weight and want to celebrate! yay!)

Anyway, any ideas? Boutique jeans cost @$100 or so and I can't do that. I think what I'm looking for is something decently cheap that doesn't look as old-fashioned as my current jeans, and perhaps has a cool design on the back pockets. I've been annoyed looking online for jeans because they rarely show you what the pockets look like in the back and that's pretty important stuff right there.

Suggestions?

As you can see by the title, these jeans need to be both Cheap and, furthermore, not cost a bajillion dollars. ha ha

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

you're pretty tall, right?

when i was home last time i got new jeans from express, DKNY and levis. at the michigan city outlet mall there. which meant they were pretty cheap...

i find gap jeans ok as well. hooray for jeans for tall girls!

colette (a2lette), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I am having jeans woes as of late, too. Low rise jeans make me look strangely shaped. I bought a pair of jeans at OLD NAVY that have actually received a few compliments. They were like $30 or something ridic like that.

Me and Sarah share each other's jeans. Hurrah for girls who are equally as tall as their boyfriends!

Yes, almost 6'. Michigan city outlet mall?!! I'm there. Oh, wait. I suppose it's in Michigan...?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I'm totally a dude and just mostly buy cheap crappy jeans, but based on Sarah's experiences, I have to say WTF is up with some stores ONLY selling low-rise jeans. THEY AREN'T FOR EVERYONE, PEOPLE.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a certain style of levi's that says it's sorta low rise, but it really isn't. all my friends have bought them too b/c they make everyone's ass look awesome. they have a slight flair at the bottom, which usually looks horrible on me, but for some reason, they work. oh yeah: $30.
i think it's the 519 kind? i'll double check.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah. 519.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i bought a pair of 569s today! they are designed to hang low the way i wear every kind of pant!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you just take your pants off?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know about girl jeans, but I buy jeans I really like at the Gap for $35-40 (no, not those $$$ ones on the rack, the cheap ones on the table!).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

old navy is probably a good bet. even the gap's prices have skyrocketed. i hadn't been there in a while and had sticker shock when i went hunting for a pair of cheap jeans. i'd rather spend an extra $30 to get a pair of earls on sale.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

also i bought a corduroy blazer for fall fun

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

DKNY, or the ones I buy at least, are insanely, insanely low rise; they expose the entirety of my stomach and back tattoos, neither of which are exactly in a high up position (If I'm wearing hipster undies from the gap, the stomach tattoo is covered). I only wear low rise jeans though, lower the better.

I like Guess? jeans despite the fact that the type I buy are not lowrise (#519 maybe? I'll check at home) and I got several pairs at the GAP recently for free--none of which are very low-rise at all. They were all in their long and lean collection which are A) long B) bootcut C) hipriders, but not asspants. The thing is, their prices have all gone up tons recently, like everything is $60.

Old Navy's "low rises" are also not that low, and they come in long lengths.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a fan of the Levi's as well, got a great pair for like $29 with a little stretch & a nice slim cut, and in a tall size. Gap jeans don't fit me properly, it doesn't matter which style I try, so I gave up there. Express has surprisingly nice jeans and pants that are affordable and come in a ton of colors (though fewer, as usual, for the tall size..). There's also J Crew, they have tall sizes and though pricey they haven't hit $100 yet.

one pair of expensive jeans will usually last longer and look a billion times better than 3 or 4 pairs of crappier jeans... unless you can find excellent vintage ones. not as a matter of brand consciousness, but sometimes you really do get what you pay for (well, not really, but for all intents and purposes)

this is true, except where women's diesel jeans are concerned. they're ugly and shoddily made.

omg

amateur!!st, Monday, 13 September 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, but women are lucky in that they have three billion more brands to choose from than men do

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i recently spent $135 on a pair of men's levi's. I am insane. I have never spent this much money on jeans before. However, they're now my most favorite jeans in the universe.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, wait. I suppose it's in Michigan...?

No! Indiana!

oops (Oops), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i totally need to go to the michigan city outlet mall. michigan city outlet fall fap?

amateur!!st, Monday, 13 September 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i get clothing money for work and i can wear whatever i like to work so i am sometimes a bit irrational.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm happy with my levis-- i think they're probably 519s or something similar (i used to only wear men's 517s, which i still vouch for, if you can find them, and the new ones are the girls stretchy version)

i've never done well with old navy-- not long enough for me. i need at least a 33" inseam!

michigan city is in indiana. it's about a 30 minute drive from chicago. it's weird because it's the total craphole town that has nothing except an outlet mall, a casino and a nuclear power plant.

i'd like some new jeans as well. all mine are a bit saggy in the ass, and i'd like something a little more clingy. although i also don't love the low-rise thing.

xpost-- i'm planning on hitting michigan city at xmas, if anyone wants to go?

i saw a community theater performance of "oklahoma!" there once!

amateur!!st, Monday, 13 September 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I asked this once before, but no harm asking it again. Are there any well-known brands of jeans who make 35 inch inside leg? 34 is too short, 36 too long. I need a goldilocks pair.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 13 September 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i've only seen them in even sizes. can't you get them tailored? wouldn't cost too much to do, i'd imagine

colette (a2lette), Monday, 13 September 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

stretch jeans, colette. sergio valente makes a wonderful pair that's clingy but not superlow in the waist.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 13 September 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

some more advice here
New Fucking Jeans

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

bah - that thread's mostly info for boys jeans in london, which won't help you much...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

MARK!!! Gap do odd lengths, so maybe try there.
Sarah, try H & M & also Gap.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow Levis here cost at least $100 AUD without question unless its some kind of warehouse clearance. Even lesser brands are at least $60. We're ripped off :(

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

looks like nordstrom has this sergio valente...maybe i'll try some on at xmas. if they cost $110, they probably cost £110 as well, and that's over the pain threshold for me.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno if this is useful for anyone at all, but Next clearance in Oxford is having some kinda crazy sale, which means it's EVEN CHEAPER THAN CLEARANCE - they have racks and racks of blandly nice jeans (and tops and shoes and shirts and...) for like 10 quid.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually really love Next, embarassingly enough.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

a quid is a small animal right?

pricey, but i've had my two pairs for just over 3 years and they show no signs of falilng apart.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I got them 519s, I think. Hey so I know Wicker Park is all boutiqued out now, but aren't any of the cheaper places along Milwaukee still going? My basic pants selection used to consist almost entirely of $20 corduroy junk from US#1.

I have found my dreamy cheap-jeans-source for Manhattan, but I'm afraid to mention it to anyone, lest they go get all the good pairs first.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Also weirdly the two best pairs of jeans I've ever had came from along Milwaukee as well -- one from that frilly girly vintage place that I think relocated to Miami or something (Milkweed?), the other from the horribly-named Una Mae's Freak Boutique. Neither of which were very good or especially inexpensive, but dude, I cleaned up on this one pair of jeans, they were the sweetness.
