I haven't, but I'm sure someone here must have. Stories please.

Not knowingly.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't, but my Dad has. He jumped into the Thames at King's Reach in the middle of January and pulled out a homeless guy who'd tried to do himself in. The police told him he could have died for his efforts because of the cold and all the nasty bacteria in the river. They took the rescued man back to the station for a hot bath to warm up, but he then tried to drown himself in the bath.

My grandfather had a big scar on his leg from a time when he took another man's bullet and saved his life. On his death bed, he told everyone he actually tripped and fell on a fence. Devastated, I tell you.

I pulled my little brother out of the road about half a second before a speeding driver would have hit him - I was about 7, he was 4. Does that count?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I pulled someone back from stepping into the path of a car, it wasn't definite that they would have been hit and killed but it was very very close.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Also I once stopped someone from knifing a hobo.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I have sometimes snuck up behind friends leaning out of windows or over balconies, pushed them a bit, grabbed them and yelled "SAVED YOUR LIFE!" Hilarity.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Had to do the heimlich manuever on my son when he was 3. It was an orange slice, and it really did pop out of there and go flying across the kitchen.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I got an image of your little brother set into the asphalt, and you yanking him out and tearing up half the road.

I really like these hero stories, especially Madchen's (first one). It reminds me of It's A Wonderful Life. I can't think of any, maybe I come from a family of cowards.

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

no-one given blood then?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but Gary Lineker's never thanked me for it.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanted to give blood, and I sent off for the pack and everything but then wimped out. : (((

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I've given blood twice, but they had to have a good dig around my elbow to find a vein and the amount they managed to squeeze out was so pitiful and I ended up with a big bruise and feeling very faint that I never did it again.

When my doctor has to do a blood test, she uses a baby's needle and takes it from my hand, which is fine for a syringeful, but no good for three quarters of a pint.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I've given blood and platelets regularly since I was 17. Apheresis (for platelets) is similar to giving blood, only you have a needle in each arm and you're hooked up to a separation machine for an hour, hour and a half or so. You get to watch a DVD and the nurses are very nice to you. The platelets are very perishable and have to be matched more carefully than whole blood, so you're usually donating for a specific patient (often a cancer or burn patient) in the same hospital.

I'm also registered as an organ donor. Does that count for anything?

quincie, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not really allowed to give blood. I've tried a couple of times in the past, but they test me, and then tell me "No, no, keep your blood, you need it more than we do, in fact, can we interest you in making a withdrawl?"

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm almost sure I saved an 5 passengers in a car once. I saw or rather felt my noxious bro sneakily redistribute his weight onto one arse cheek and I knew what was coming. I quickly opened the window and sprayed a liberal squirt of something sufficiently masking. The after-fart effects were substantially lowered and I saved us all from almost certain death.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Lose the superfluous 'an' in there.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

is it "saving someone's life" if the person was never really planning to kill themselves anyway?

stockholm cindy, montessori emo superstar (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i've not saved a life, but i've spared aplenty.

dysøn (dyson), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I pulled my uncle back onto the pavement once when he was going to step into the path of a bus. I also talked him out of suicide twice, and got an ambulance to him the other time he attempted it.

Prat.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

my older sister saved MY life when i choked on a denver omelette when i was 7. I was in a restaurant and was clearly choking and all the adults just stood around staring and my 13 year old sister went into ACTION.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I give blood on a regular (every six months) basis whenever there's a donor session near me. So I might well have saved someone's life but don't know about it. Just for interest, my blood type is ORH Positive.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I have

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I was jogging on a winters evening and found a woman unconscious in a hedge. Whether or not I saved her life I don't know, but I wouldn't have rated her chances if I hadn't found her.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

what had happened to her¿

dysøn (dyson), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it was drugs. The paramedics were able to revive her, but she wasn't making much sense. But then neither was I when I found her.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I once saved the entire world from Galactus by offering to become his herald. Did I get any thanks? Did I fuck.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Never.

I'm sorry, not to knock your dad's heroism, as he quite clearly did something extremely brave and selfless, but this guy WANTED TO DIE. So say he's still alive somewhere, do you really think he's thanking his lucky stars that he was rescued? No, he's probably attempted suicide many more times because (at least he believes) his life is shit and not worth living. Sometimes saving a life is not the kindest thing you can do.

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

And that has nothing to do with homelessness, just to clarify. If he had been an investment banker/student/musician I would say the same thing.

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you for your contribution
