DUD because when I was much shyer I did this with peeople I wanted to hug and kiss. POOR substitue!

why isn't there a middle five though? there is a low five and a high five but where does it leave the mediocre?

At my school you had :
'Give me five!'
'On the side!'
'Up above!' (where the slapper (!) had to lift his/her hand up to slap the other persons lofted hand)
'Down below' (then the slappee would pull his/her hand away so slapper missed)
'You're too slow!'
At my school this was often a prefix to blind ugly violence and scraps.

The middle five is the "five exchange", a custom I am succeeding in reviving. Rather than an athlete-style "hi-five", just hold your hand out, palm up. When you receive your slap, they turn their palm up and you slap em back. It's much more conversational and diggy diggy down, man.

high five is for: an accomplishment; a congratulations
"five exchange" ("gimme some skin") is for: a more low-key acknowledgement or simple greeting/leave-taking
waving is for: last-chance goodbye
air-kissing is for: i have no fucking idea

two finger salute as opposed to four finger is more caj, plus similar to peace out gesture. One finger salute deserves a thread of its own.
