There can be only one.

Hello little calf. May I sink my teeth into your delicious flesh!!? Yum!

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yum is right!

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

God I love veal. Veal Parmesan....MMMMM!!!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Pork.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

At least those baby cows are dying for a good purpose...TO SATISFY MY CRAVING FOR THEIR TENDER DELICIOUS FLESH!!!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread is livestockist.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha.

To answer the question, I haven't eaten the stuff for years. Probably not likely to, as I'm in a relationship w/a total veggie, and though she sez she's happy for me to have meat in the house, and ok w/me cooking it and stuff, I know she doesn't like it, and that which she doesn't like = that which I don't want in the house.

I can still remember the taste though. It was delicious.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not squeamish about many things but the combination of baby cows and diarrhea does it for me. I know there are other comparably vile livestock issues out there but this is the only one that bothers me.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Pork.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

In big handfuls, veal only exists because of the dairy industry (no requirement for female calves, no excess of male calves) so if veal offends you, so must the dairy industry. (In essence, this is why I believe all 'moral' vegetarians must become vegans by the logic of their beliefs.)

ME? I love it. Only blue steak is better.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Pork is gross because most forms of delivery are too salty.

Having said that, I am now wondering what lamb bacon would taste like.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I like pork, but the cow is the queen of meats.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, sheep are the best baby animals to eat BY FAR.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i've never had lamb.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

RUN DO NOT WALK TO AN INDIAN RESTAURANT AND GET EITHER LAMB SAAG OR LAMB VINDALOO

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Hot dogs are the one true meat, in that they encapsulate all other meat.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(In essence, this is why I believe all 'moral' vegetarians must become vegans by the logic of their beliefs.)

Totally OTM.

That said, I haven't eaten veal in about 15-18 years, and if I hear about something being fished nearly to exctinction, I'll avoid that. I'm worried that the day will come that the only fish I can eat is pond-raised catfish.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I swear, you could show me the cutest lamb on the face of the Earth and I would still eat it. If you want me to stop eating you, STOP BEING SO DAMNED TASTY.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

lamb kabab/shawerma is very flavorful.

veal scallopini is a major delicacy in northern italian cooking.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 September 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan is OTM in all respects.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 16 September 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I am hungover and now HUNGRY FOR COW-FLESH. Most baby animals are pretty tasty, but you really can't beat a roast suckling pig cooked very slowly by a Spanish grandmother.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds like an exercise in transferring yr meat-guilt. If meat-eaters buy veal, this is the fault of vegetarians? Surely if there was no market for veal, there wouldn't be a veal industry.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps I should point out I was a vegetarian for nearly 10 years, and that theory was argued to me by someone who had just turned vegan when he had realised it. (I decided to eat meat again because I decided I didn't want to become a vegan, and so my moral argument to myself collapsed.)

But that isn't what I'm saying at all. I'm not transferring any meat guilt. What I'm saying is that the veal industry as a bulk market is only viable because the dairy industry exists. Most British veal is exported to the continent because of squeamishness, which in turn has led to a preponderance of 'white' veal. Most British butchers (who may go to individual farms) sell 'pink' veal. The point I'm making is that people who choose not to eat veal for moral reasons should also ultimately choose not to support the dairy industry, since they are two sides of the same coin.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd agree with you that the veal industry is viable because of industrialised milk production. But the moral responsibility for the veal industry lies totally with the people that buy the stuff.

Interesting that you gave up being a veggie because of this. It's something that I've wrestled with too. What I've tried to do is cut down on dairy, and try and buy the most ethically produced stuff that I can. The calf surplus - I think - is due to the high yields that farmers are trying to get. I wouldn't see it as as much of a problem if consumption was reduced. Does eating goat's cheese create a market for kid meat?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

If they raised veal pens three feet off the ground so all of the dookie fell out through a grate underneath them, I would totally be down with the veal again.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 September 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it doesn't seem that disliking the veal industry would necessarily mean boycotting the dairy industry - you could have a dairy industry without having to eat the calves produced - it would raise costs, but it's not necessary. I actually don't think I've ever eaten veal - not on principle, though on balance I probably don't dig the idea, I've just avoided it thus far. Grown-up beef is so lovely anyway.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 17 September 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe. The animal not being able to move .. just eat & shit .. also makes for an industry I can't support.

xpost (RE: Dan)

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 17 September 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know about taste, but if they have to be eaten, we should eat them as soon as they're born. I could eat a newborn cow.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 17 September 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess cows probably enjoy life (not in the context of industrial farming, but in some idyllic cow-friendly corner of England), so mybe you should wait till they are really old, so it's more like moothenasia.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 17 September 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I respect that, Dave, but really the only thing that bothers me is baby cow + dookie (and yes, I KNOW other animals deal with this too and I have no explanation why it bothers me in this one particular case).

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

H2-H4 (H2-H4), Monday, 2 October 2006 06:39 (nineteen years ago)

my mum used to make viener schnitzel every now and again when i was a kid and i loved it, but i have to be honest and say i can't really taste much of a difference if you substitute a well-hammered pork escalope.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Monday, 2 October 2006 08:47 (nineteen years ago)

Lamb pasanda is best.

JTS (JTS), Monday, 2 October 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

you can't really get veal in restaurants anymore... the last few times i've had it was a wiener schnitzel at an oktoberfest thing, and a veal parmigiana at a random pizza/pasta place in queens, but otherwise i just don't see veal on menus, like ever.

The only thing better than eating lamb is eating lamb while watching etherial goth girls cry.

(xpost: Aw. Oh well, at least I'm still eating lamb.)
