San Gennaro Festival : C or D?

I pass this up every year because, well, no one I know wants to join me. There seems to be this strange loathing/fear towards this yearly street festival among my New Yorker friends -- but why? Just seems like a fun excuse to overeat/drink and do some anthropological research, right? Or is there something evil about La Festa that I'm missing?

i cant decide what makes a better reason to stay home and watch DVDs. puerto rican day parade or the san gennaro festival.

I like the festival in Williamsburg with the big tower thingy better.

My one gripe with it is that it's during the same time as all the college kids return to campus, which amounts to loads of kids getting wasted and being loud and obnoxious. (Ew, I am SO old.) My friend used to live in the area, and ever year she'd complain about kids puking/peeing on the sidewalks.

Well, I'm from New Jersey so that might explain my fascination.

Every so often, my neighborhood has mini-festivals for no reason whatsoever. A marching band will appear out of nowhere and start parading down the street. A sausage & pepper cart is assembled, and carnival games are set up. I love Italians.

The Greek Orthodox are great for this too.

Ok, I'm goin't tonight. Who's comin'?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys haven't been to the one in Williamsburg with the big tower thingy that they carry around with the priest and the marching band on it? 'Cause seriously, that's like the funnest shit ever. Esp. when they play the theme to "Rocky" and large Italian women start wiping their eyes.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i have! that one is funny

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAT! You guys are such haters. San Gennaro has been classic forever...

I liked the little Italian street festival they have every August on 6th street in Jersey City. I had my dinner there the night of last year's big blackout.
