Thanks to Elvis T for this one:

http://www.afri-cola.com/eng/01/01_03_alternative.html

Ads I would strongly suggest you sample:

1956 -- "Überwindet den toten Punkt"

1968 -- "Nonnen"

1973 -- "Lust" -- "The first time that a "naked man" is shown in advertising."

2001 -- "Message in a Bottle" (directed by Wim Wenders!)

The soundtracks to the first three in particular are thoroughly and completely disturbing.

Thanks to Elvis T for this one:

and thanks to me for being the one who sent him the afri-cola link! ;-)

i understand they sell this at cost plus world market. i don't have one near me, but el t said he'd pick me up a few bottles. WHOOOO caffeine rush!

A. Atom Gorgon (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

THIS THREAD IS NOT GETTING THE ATTENTION IT SHOULD. You really really must check out those ads.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed, they are tremendous

jones (actual), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(the newest ones are pretty unremarkable tho – wenders's in particular)

jones (actual), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

As JBR apparently said to Elvis, though, "It's the most European of ads."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yes! it made me think "vidal sassoon: the soda"

jones (actual), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa.... I really want to try some of this. The ads were damn effective; I'm hoping to trip my balls off.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

And have German voices hectoring you over industrial/Krautrock collages? A BAD trip.

I like this bit from the official history:

1974
Karl Flach resists the power struggles and desires for take-over from large concerns and holds on to his faith in the confident German middle class.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 September 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently it has more caffeine in it than Jolt or Red Bull.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 September 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

considerably more. i don't think the germans have a limit on how much caffeine they can put in their soft drinks.

A. Atom Gorgon (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

More Atom Gorgons should be so informative. Usually they're crushing buildings and turning people to stone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 September 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

considerably more. i don't think the germans have a limit on how much caffeine they can put in their soft drinks.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Saturday, 18 September 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

g--ff (gcannon), Saturday, 18 September 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had it - good but *odd*, in a way I can't really describe.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it's good. You can get it in Seattle at Larry's. Never found it odd, but then, my blood is already like 20 percent caffeine.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 18 September 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone on this thread want to tell me what to do in Berlin for the next four days?

Dance Kid Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 18 September 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

judging by these ads your options are:
1. undergo tests behind frosty glass
2. grow an afro and get called "bush baby" (nobody even wants to acknowledge that one do they??)
3. swim around in a sophisticated black void

jones (actual), Saturday, 18 September 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
This one died too soon, so.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 February 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

dave q (listerine), Saturday, 5 February 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

They used to sell Afri-Cola in Finland, but I'm not sure if they do anymore. It had a weird but good taste, quite distinctive from Coke and Pepsi even though I think it was supposed to taste like them.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 5 February 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

PRETTY SWEET.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Knute Rockne, All American (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

Afri-Cola was available at World Market a couple years ago, along with fruit flavored Moxie. Yum.
