I took a long nap this afternoon and am just now hoping to get inspiration to cook some chard. I haven't listened to much music. A little Ojos de Brujo this morning. (I like the first few tracks, but then it begins to sound too much like "world music.") And after my nap: Wadi al-Safi: Natrak Sahran. I interrupted that to listen to some clips from a CD by a female oudist from Tunisia, but I decided that it's not really an essential purchase, much as I like the idea of a female oudist from Tunisia.

The new Prodigy album. Christ this is fun. I don't get the hate at all (well, I do if I surrender to my most dismissive notions about technoids. But I try not to).

I have to admit I've listened to the mp3s I picked for The Stypod a lot today. Indulgent, yeah, but they happen to be three songs that make me incredibly happy and I'm excited that they're readily available for anyone who cares.

great to hear you liked it milton -- I'm really enjoying that haniwa record so far, saw some of yr posts regarding them when I did a search on ilm.

last night I played more varese: enjoyed it lots before but actually the music is really sinking in, I can see the dada connections after listening to bits of the music UBU web. played 'ecuatorial', ionisation', 'deserts', 'dance for burgess' and 'tuning up'

webern in bits op10, 21, 30. again I feel this is sinking in even more.

I heard a little bit of the Steve Tibbetts collaboration with a Tibetan monk (sorry but I'm more familar with Steve Tidbits) and it sounded really good. I don't generally go in for the Tibetan music I've heard, but this was nice.

LaRue (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 05:00 (twenty years ago)

Junior Boys on headphones, which I have decided is the way it was meant to be heard.

Arcade Fire, not because it's tops on the Pitchfork list, but because the first time Jessa made me listen to it, it made me really sad and I couldn't say why, which is always a sign of a great album.

Modest Mouse. This album is so fucking underrated by indie boys. What, because there was a hit single? The thing is brilliant.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 05:41 (twenty years ago)

Also: Neko Case - Blacklisted. After a close listening on a long car trip, I realized that it's much more than I thought it was, and I thought it was great to begin with.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 05:47 (twenty years ago)

Modest Mouse. This album is so fucking underrated by indie boys. What, because there was a hit single? The thing is brilliant.

Synths and shiny production do not help Modest Mouse one bit, whose biggest strength was always the GEETARZ. Admittedly, I've only heard the entire album a few time and I wasn't paying close attention, but it seemed entirely too harmless and bland to my ears.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 06:31 (twenty years ago)

It's their "songwriting" album, and their "lyrics" album -- at least compared to "THIS PLANE IS DEFINITELY CRASHING!"

I understand how some people feel, but I think it's a very different band now. A different band who made a crazy good album.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 06:36 (twenty years ago)

Merry Lines in the Sky by Berntholer and Sonatas of Faure and Franck by Arturo Delmoni with Meg Bachman Vas. Interestingly enough, on the CD sleeve Franck's violin and piano sonata is compared to the sonata heard in Remembrance of Things Past. I don't know if that was the inspiration, but it would be fitting. I like Berntholer's singer's pronunciation of English. The sleeve says she is Albanian. You can listen to two minutes of "My Suitor" here: http://www.darla.com/.
