The Sims 2 - anyone got it yet?

So I got The Sims 2 on the weekend and had a go. Unlike its predecessor it needs an *incredibly* beefy machine to run on - sorta like you're playing Unreal 2004 only with wooden decking and people snogging and having parties. Or er, something.

The true 3d makes it a hell of a lot more real than the old game - you can zoom in, out and around at any angle, right up to the TV screen and watch whats playing, you can see the sims chatting via MSN (!!) and stuff.

Its a lot more complex life-wise (you can be born, go right thru life, grow up, behave based on how your childhood went, get old then die, etc), but what pisses me off is the game's gone back to square one as far as what you can do with it - none of the expansion pack or 3rd party stuff such as tonnes of great furniture, pets, vacations, etc has been included. I assumed they'd start from where they were up to in Sims 1. My mistake - EA obviously want to keep this cash cow grrrr.

The problem for me is the video card on my laptop is shite and so the visuals look horribly blocky and aliased. So for the first time in my life I find myself being pushed to buy a new PC (which I was going to eventually do anyway) just for a game.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 19 September 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

So, anyone else had a go of it yet? Any thoughts? Any tips? I'm struggling to keep up with all the shite my sims have to do all the time but its partly cos the game runs soooo slow for me...

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 19 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi trayce! would you mind telling me what the minimum system requirements are for Sims 2?

rainy (rainy), Sunday, 19 September 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ha I thought I was the only one here who played sims! Still on the ol livin large though, my computer wouldn't have a show at playing sims 2 :-( and chances of me upgrading are NIL.
Greedy buggers making the space for 'new expansion packs' just so you can get all the extra furniture etc, i thought they would have included it too.

I haven't looked at mine for ages, got sick of them a while ago but now you have reminded me....

donna (donna), Sunday, 19 September 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it runs abysmal slow on my machine too. I'm really enjoying the character creation at the moment (haven't got any of my sims to do much) - there are so many things you can alter about the face and clothes etc. Also, you get some funny looking types by randomising the characters.

I don't have much to do this week though, so I should work my way into it a bit more.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 19 September 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I got it on Wednesday and so far I'm proceeding very, very slowly, partly due to prior commitments (I decided to use this weekend to clean my bookshelves) and my reticence to see the characters I create grow old and die.

It is very beautiful, filled a kind of lush comic realism om all its details, and I'm looking forward to games with a near-Tolstoyan epic sweep of families and generations. Other than that, it's still too early for me to say how much of an improvement the sequel is.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 19 September 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got it for the girlfriend. I am looking forward to new and exciting Sim-torture methods. 3 gigs on the hard drive is a little bit wack though.

adam (adam), Sunday, 19 September 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

This game is another reason why I HAVE to buy a new computer at Christmas.

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 19 September 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah really, 3 gigs is a hell of a lot. But in a 'hilarious' coincidence my computer became severely bust and I had to reformat the hard drive. So, I've got lots of space. And I've lost lots and lots of MP3s. Bugger.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 19 September 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got it for the girlfriend.

it comes with a free girlfriend?

The min specs as from the site at http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?help_id=21 are:

If you have a T&L capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM then you need at least:
800 MHz processor or better
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space
If you have a non-T&L capable video card (an Intel Extreme Graphics or a Radeon 7000/VE Series) then you need at least:
2.0 GHz processor or better
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98, or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space

Supported video cards (and the more video memory the better):

ATI RadeonTM series (7000 or better)
Radeon 7000/VE series (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
7200, 7500
8500, All-In-Wonder 8500
9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800
X300, X600, X800

Nvidia® QuadroTM series
Quadro, Quadro2, Quadro4

Nvidia® Geforce series (GeForce2 and better)
GeForce2
GeForce3, 3 Ti
GeForce4, 4Ti, MX 420, 440
GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900, 5950
GeForce 6600, 6800

Intel® Extreme Graphics (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
82845, 82865, 82915

The main thing thats important is the video card. If your card isnt a fairly recent Geforce/Nvidia style card, you might have problems. Its already been found by some people that the onboard Intel 818125 or wtf ever that ones called doesnt work with the game. My card, bafflingly, is an SiS but it seems to work - JUST. It looks like total shit tho.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 19 September 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It did seem like it was missing a lot after playing the original game, although seeing as it uses 4 CDs to install the game, goodness knows how long it would have taken to install if there was an expansion pack's worth of stuff with the original Sims 2 game aswell. Still, even though there are far fewer objects, they've made most of them come in different colours, which makes a change from buying the really expensive sofa because it's the only red one, for me anyway. Seeing as I'll probably buy the expansion packs like a sucker anyway there's plenty here to keep me happy for the moment.

lupine lupin (lupinelupin), Monday, 20 September 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Thats true, the colourisation is nice, at least the furniture can all match now and is somewhat *modern* (I had to wonder what universe the original designers were in, the orig sims1 furniture was so old fashioned and UGLY!).

No real need to wait for expansion packs as long as Maxis/EA either: release an officially supported object making/tweaking plugin for, say, 3DS Max, so that people can make stuff and upload it to the Exchange thats already on the site (much like they've done with Sim City4)... or, if they decide not to do this, some 3rd party out there will inevitably code one eventually.

Maxis are silly. They made a tool for making ones own objects/lots for simcity 4 and let people exchange them all for free on the site. They never did this for the Sims - people coded their own eventually - and this led to 3rd parties charging for their objects and furniture which obviously Maxis would not want, but its their own fault!

Anyway I could go on about that daft business decision forever but I'll shut up now. I cant wait til I get my money together for me new PC...

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 September 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Right after his birthday party, Patrick Merritt moved away from his home and his parents, Jake and Henry Merritt, a little too abruptly. I cried.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

OK: one *very* annoying thing. The game randomly generates friends to accompany your Sims when they come home from work or school. This would be great were it not for the fact that most (all?) of them don't live in the neighborhood, hence you can't "play" them, hence they never grow up. So all the hard work you've put in making these outsiders your Sim's lust object goes all for naught once your Sim grows up from teen to adult -- far as I can see, adults can't fall in love with teenagers.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a snippet of this at a friend's house -- oh man, do I want it. Oh man.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG I am such a home wrecker! I was playing the premade Verona 'hood yesterday (the one with the feuding families). I took Bianca Monty and moved her into a home on her own, but she kept wanting to have a first kiss and thinking about babies so I'm all dammit, girl needs a man.

So I got her to chat up her best friend Oberon and they totally hit it off and snogged and then I made her propose to him and ask him to move in. Then a little woo-hooing...

...and it was only then I realised that Oberon was Biancas best friend, along with HIS FIANCEE TITANIA. And their kids.

I STOLE MY BEST FRIENDS BOYFRIEND OMG. I feel so ashamed.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

PS this game is great. Now all I need is a decent PC to play it on - 2 FPS is just silly.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I got this for my girlfriend, and her computer doesn't come close to handling it.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah you need a P3 or P4 with at least a 1ghz CPU, 512-1gb RAM, and a Radeon 9600+ or nvidia card (a 128mb or more one).

I'm planning on buying a system with 1gb RAM and those new PCI express slots, that should do the trick. And cost me a ton but eh. I wont have to upgrade again for years.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 26 September 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of my beloved Sims:

Henry Merritt. Kind of straight-laced. In the military. Very buff.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, more of this! I'll post some screens later too. Tho mine are a bit crap looking til I get the new pc.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Jake Merritt. Spouse of Henry. I always imagine him as just a big kid with a punk rock past. Just got rid of his handlebar moustache.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Patrick Merritt, the adopted son of Jake and Henry, now all grown-up and striking out on his own and making hamburgers.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow so you were able to get those guys as a couple to adopt, thats cool.. does marriage come up as an option? I heard some rumblings that got yoinked from the game - Ive not tried it yet though (even though 2 of my female sims so far seem to hit it off well with the laydeez, heh).

I wish my in game grafx looked that nice :(

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Henry and Jake were created as spouses, so I don't know if same-sex couples have the same kind of ceremonies as het ones do when they get married. Looking into the memory banks of some of my Sims, it seems both het and homo couples can get engaged, but het ones "get married" while homo ones "enter into union" or some similar euphemism. Still, for all other purposes, Henry and Jake are treated the same as the married couples in the game, and even wear little gold rings on their fingers.

Other than reaching the household income level of about $2,000 - $3,000, there wasn't the slightest obstacle to Henry and Jake adopting. In fact, since they were also created with the family aspiration, the game kept pushing and pushing me to get them to adopt.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 27 September 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

My house of Sim geeks just had an alien baby delivered to them from a flying saucer!

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Monday, 27 September 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael - thats really cool :) I love how much depth this game is shaping up to be having, thus far I've played it anyway.

OMG Mandee haha thats cool.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 27 September 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I am training up one sim to be a doctor, so she can buy that career reward dummy operation training doohickey. It looks fun.

The other day a sim had friends over to visit, and one beeotch walked in and helped herself to my money tree! Humf.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 27 September 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Gah every time I see those screenshots above my hand instinctively goes for the right mouse button to scroll around for a different camera angle... haha :(

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 27 September 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss this game so much. I haven't played it in over a year because my computer was too shitty. I have all the expansion packs for the original Sims, minus the one with pets, but I'm wondering if I should buy Sims 2 just now. I'm especially concerned with the building features... are they any different? Better? I want a better dollhouse.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you get a new computer?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm weird, because I have Sims 1 for the PS2, but I never really got into it. I think it was just too much work for something that was supposed to be fun, and I demand instant gratification.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Jordan, I ordered it this morning. Should be adequate for Sims 2, according to the specs above.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Gaaah, I just spent the evening installing it on my compie - WAY TOO SLOW, so I'm gonna try it on my husband's. It's more game-worthy.

Aw, Michael, Henry and Jake are *adorable*. Now I want gay spice.

first Sims 2 expansion announced:
http://thesims2.ea.com/news/detail.php?id=269

Monday , November 22, 2004
Sims 2 to Expand: Sims 2 University in the Works!
The Sims are going to college. Pillowfights and togas on tap!

...Pranks, parties and college social interactions add to the excitement while your Sims explore campus locations such as college lounges, pool halls, gyms and coffee houses. As in real life, if your Sims start running low on funds, they can earn Simoleans by picking up a part time job, like tutoring, or engaging in riskier affairs like printing money as a member of the "secret society."

or STRIPPING. oh yeah, you're "workin' your way thru college", ain'tcha?

still, how could they simulate university life without vomiting, bad drugs, and crushing, devastating loneliness?

kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 07:54 (twenty years ago)

Stripping? I wonder how long until this game is just a pornography sim with RTS elements. If that's a good thing or a bad thing I can't say. How long before it becomes so popular that we all decide to live as brains in vats, living eternally in a virtual world with only eight basic needs and a limited choice of clothes and haircuts.

Bernard the Butler (Lynskey), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:04 (twenty years ago)

omg i wanna play this game! (although part of me wants to go out, at some point in my life, after GTA3 is over)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:42 (twenty years ago)

no, there won't be stripping.

yet.

kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 15:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying to figure out the screencap there. James Coburn and Grace Jones are the university chancellors?

this isn't ILG.

#/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Sunday, 7 June 2009 11:39 (sixteen years ago)

Christ, this thread is nearly 5 years old.

Haven't got 3 yet, but will probably grab it tonight and have a go.

JimD, Sunday, 7 June 2009 14:36 (sixteen years ago)

Er, I bought it ON IPHONE.

JimD, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 13:49 (sixteen years ago)

I want the Sims3, it looks amazing! But I'm gonna wait til the bigs are ironed out and at least one expansion's out because like Sims2, its back to the start - no clubs, restaurants, ... NO HOT TUB WTF!?

Trayce, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 00:40 (sixteen years ago)

SIMS 3 SUCKS ITS BORING

homosexual II, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 02:17 (sixteen years ago)

Coming from as hardkor a Simsite as you thats suprising Mands! Explain?

freeway onramps for arms, and a heart as black as coal (Trayce), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 03:47 (sixteen years ago)

tbh there's a lot in sims3 at release, and I've not come across any bugs yet.

i know what you're saying Trayce wrt waiting for an expansion, but it's not like going from TS1 to TS2, which was like walking into a complete wasteland. There's a lot included in TS3 and plenty to do from the get-go.

also imo the biggest drawback of TS2 was the huge loading time whenever you went anywhere, which rendered most of the expansions null & void. Sure, my Sims had clubs, restaurants, bars to go to, ran businesses, could go on holidays, but after the first two days of novelty newness, I could never bring myself to make my sims leave the home lot, or I'd have to go fix myself a drink and smoke a cigarette while it loaded the content. Then the same again when they went home. GNNNGH.

Just for removing this massive annoyance, TS3 gets my vote. Despite less content, my sims actually do more stuff.

This should be moved to ILG.

#/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 08:22 (sixteen years ago)

I think I started this thread before ILG existed!

freeway onramps for arms, and a heart as black as coal (Trayce), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 08:41 (sixteen years ago)

yah, me too. just sayin'.

#/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 08:42 (sixteen years ago)

I'm liking this so far, they've made it pretty much impossible to max your character out early so you need to put some more thought into things and, yeah, it's so much easier to go and visit the community lots now.

There seem to be a few Arrested Development references in this, I noticed on the character creation screen I could make my character a never-nude if I wanted, and now one of my sims has met someone called "Gobias Koffi".

88, Thursday, 11 June 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

Best mate lent me his laptop while mine's flaked out and he's installed this on it. It's pretty damn good! Not missing anywhere near as much as I'd feared, and the whole-town fluidity completely changes the game dynamic - esp as you can be distracted by something but still rock up to work a bit late, rather than just miss the hour window (or leave early, if you want to face that wrath).

My sim's a guitar playin' band manager who likes growing veggies and cooking. She'll whip out the acoustic and annoy people in the park at any given opportunity. I'm sick of her night-owl hours though, it's made socialising pretty difficult even though there seem to be people around town at all hours!

I'm Rick Wakeman, bitch! (Trayce), Sunday, 21 June 2009 05:08 (sixteen years ago)
