Michael Keaton falls into a gap in the space-time continuum

This is the only explanation I can think of for Michael Keaton's disappearence for the past few years. Since he was in "Out of Sight," he was in some movie called "A Shot for Glory," a straight-to-video thriller called "Quicksand," and a couple of TV shows (including King of the Hill). Now he's playing Katie Holmes' dad (and the POTUS) in First Daughter, and he's slated to be in a new Herbie the Love Bug movie with Lindsey Lohan. What's going on here? He's a good actor! Why isn't he getting good parts?

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

And he's so ugly!

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

What did he do on KotH?

Maybe he's been busy on Broadway or something.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Then there was that Jack Frost movie.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

And that one where he gave his kidney to Andy Garcia's kid.

ouch.

he needs a new agent, obviously.

amateur!!st, Monday, 20 September 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Multiplicity was pretty funny. But it suffers from Andie McDowell-itis.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember that "King of the Hill" episode. I was proud of myself for recognizing his voice, something that I'm not very good at. ("What? Martin Sheen does voice-overs for car commercials?")

His character was this dairy baron who was wooing Luann and having her stay in his mansion. The twist came when he made her wear the same dairy maiden uniform while he dressed like a cow. The episode ended with him getting eletrocuted on a conveyer belt. Really, really, weird and dark episode for "King of the Hill".

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Elmore Leonard fans, did Ray Nicolette ever star in his own book? Is MK perhaps building up to something?

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Multiplicity was pretty funny. But it suffers from Andie McDowell-itis.

MY GOD I need glasses because I thought that said "Andie McDowell-tits".

is that "white noise" as in _White Nois_ by Don Delillo that i once had terrifyingly heard
that barry levinson was to direct? deary me oh my....

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

_White Noise_ rather

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i think miklos jancso should direct "white noise"

amateur!!st, Monday, 20 September 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

From the allmovie description, it doesn't appear to be related to the DeLillo novel.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the J0n W!11!ams biopic.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

THAT White Noise isn't related, but THIS one (2005) most certainly is. Fear.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

A funny piece of trivia about Michael Keaton: his real name is Michael Douglas! I guess you can see why he changed it...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Woody Allen should direct and star in White Noise.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

You'd think he would've at least caught some voicework-in-Pixar-film action or something, wow.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

it's too bad about MK, i was really hoping he was poised for a big comeback. he is a great actor.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

he's kinda brilliant in those e leonard movies.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

he's the same character in 'out of sight' as he is in 'jackie brown' which i always thought was cool/weird. odd that though isn't it?

he's ace in 'out of sight' isn't he? and he's, what, meant to be j-lo's boyfriend? i sometimes think of that bit in 'my life' (terrible film but still) where he talks about coming into a room to shake hands. u know the bit?

he was the best batman ever. by a fckng mile. a bit sinister.

piscesboy, Monday, 20 September 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

best Dogberry ever!

ryan (ryan), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe once the Christian Bale things runs its course, Keaton can come back and be the Dark Knight.

Huk-L, Monday, 20 September 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

keaton's hit-to-miss ratio has always been pretty awful, people

jones (actual), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Then there was that Jack Frost movie.
-- Ned Raggett (ne...), September 20th, 2004.

Well there's your answer!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i have always said that were i to make a movie, michael keaton would be the first person i'd cast. Live From Baghdad is great, btw.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

We need to remember some of his earlier work too. Thus Nightshift

Damn, I have the japanese version of Porco Rosso with subs, not the (almost certainly superior) Michael Keaton voiced English language version!

Craig Gilchrist, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

White Noise looks actually pretty darn scary.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Keaton'll get a comeback one of these days. He's got really eccentric talents and just needs to find the right niche.

I feel incredibly lucky that I got to see what must be the peak moment in Jack Frost (his happy family version, not the "he's chillin...and KILLIN'" magical video box horror one - which I have seen its entirety) at the video store.

Jack and his son (who I hear got over his dad's reincarnation as a snowman surprisingly quickly) are escaping a group of bullies on a sled.

Jack: you da man!
son: no, you da man!
Jack: I da SNOWMAN!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The peak of the horror film Jack Frost is when Jack, who can transform into water to get around (the physics of this film are a little iffy), fills up a bathtub. A teenage girl gets in the tub. Soon she's screaming, cuz now she's being embraced by Jack, whose carrot nose is missing. We see her drop to the floor, blood dripping out of her mouth. Close-up Jack's face, his hand returning his carrot nose, now steaming, back to its original place.

Jack: Christmas came early...

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Shannon Elizabeth got nekkid in that film as well.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

A friend just txt'd me "Michael Keaton died last night"

Adam Bruneau, Monday, 6 July 2009 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

Also my favorite part of Batman is the "You wanna get nuts? C'mon! Let's get nuts!" scene

Adam Bruneau, Monday, 6 July 2009 00:35 (sixteen years ago)

I think he's a good actor; loved his take on Batman. He brought the right mix of haunted and everyman-appearance to the role, and humanized it. Bale's good, too, but I prefer Keaton.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 6 July 2009 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

(I realize that's heresy).

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 6 July 2009 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

Matt P, Monday, 6 July 2009 01:06 (sixteen years ago)

why did i post that

Matt P, Monday, 6 July 2009 01:07 (sixteen years ago)

lol. Maybe my punishment will be Christian Bale following me around town, haranguing me.

If so, I can only hope I get the techno rant:

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 6 July 2009 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

Terrific in Touch and Go (a very minor eighties film; hard to find), Clean and Sober, and (yeah) The Dream Team. Daniel, you're not being heretical at all! He's fine as Batman.

I don't doubt someone will write a good Lost in Translation-esque comeback role.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 6 July 2009 01:19 (sixteen years ago)

Did Keaton ever get WILD again after Beetlejouice? Or has he just done straight roles?

If Snotboogie always stole the money, why'd you let him play? (Dr. Superman), Monday, 6 July 2009 01:34 (sixteen years ago)

Clean and Sober! The Dream Team! They were ace--I'd forgotten them.

Great Expectorations (James Morrison), Monday, 6 July 2009 01:49 (sixteen years ago)

I think Joe Queenan wrote a good article about Michael Keaton's disappearance 8 or 9 years ago.

This guy was basically a rival to Tom Hanks-- a guy who kicked butt at the box office with silly comedies and then became a superstar with serious roles.

Maybe he's hard to work with?

I don't doubt someone will write a good Lost in Translation-esque comeback role.

I've actually thought this before. Every generation, there's a comic who suddenly shows unexpected emotional depth. Bill Murray is one. Keaton could be another.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 6 July 2009 02:14 (sixteen years ago)

But it's not unexpected -- he's always shown "depth," even in comic roles. Drama doesn't necessarily = deep.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 6 July 2009 02:15 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, that's fair. He's often been better than those roles, tho. He needs a good comeback vehicle.

Didn't I read that he's recently done straight-to-DVD films? That's a crime.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 6 July 2009 02:18 (sixteen years ago)

Bale's Batman is worse than Kilmer's too. Pretty much everything that involves Bale talking in the batman gravelvoice annoys the crap out of me.

Apparently White Noise cost only 10m to make, and made 55 mil just in the US. Hope MK took a percentage for his salary on that one.
