Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm afraid they wouldn't have named me at all had my gender been different =\

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

My dad apparently wanted to name my sister after the famous Roman general Belisarius if she was a boy, but I'm not sure how serious a proposition that was.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If I'd been a boy, I'd have been Ieuen.

Other choices for girls' names for me included Deirdre, Melanie or Jill. Thankfully my Dad hated all these suggestions, and actually named me after his ex-girlfriend (but my Mum didn't find out that was where he got the name from until years later. She was a tiny bit cross, I believe).

C J (C J), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You'd have been able to go to the Balkans and donate vowels to those poor people whose names consist primarily of consonants.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Belisarius is a great name! My parents came really close to naming me Anastasia after the princess.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 20 September 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Belisarius was one of Justinian's generals, right?

My mum said she'd have given me away if I'd been born a boy! I don't know what I would've been named :( :( :(

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 20 September 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, that's too sad, Elisabeth. :( (The whole "could've been given away" bit, that is. Sad.)

I think I might've been named Brian or Adam. Mom loved both names, and since she was the one who prevailed at the time of my naming (yeah, blame her, people), her choices would've probably been paramount. Though not Paramount, because it'd have been too "far out there" being named after a movie studio.

My parents never even considered that I could've been a girl, which was overly optimistic of them.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

my parents were like yours andrew, never considered i could have been a boy so they only had my name picked out. similarly, they thought another girl was on the way when my brother was born, he was to have been called marnie. they quickly picked out "drew" for him seeing as he had a penis. which is a cool name anyways.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

My brother wanted to name me "Speaker Do-Nothing" had I been a girl (he was 3 years old at the time, of course)

Alex.

I was nearly Alex as a girl too, followed by Sophie Anna. Now I am just Anna and have no middle name.

My dad took a brief fancy to the name Pandora, but, thank God, my mum vetoed it on the grounds of box jokes in later life.

I have no idea, though I assume I couldve remained Tracy, even though being a Tracy as a guy would have sucked even more than it does as a girl :(

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate my name.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Catherine. Which I quite like.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracy's not a bad name. I kind of like it. Yeah, goddamit, like Tracy Gold from Growing Pains. Remember her? She was arrested recently; I can't remember why. Anyway, Tracy's a solid name. Much better than, say, Rainbow. I know a girl named Rainbow. But she's retarded. So her name probably doesn't bother her too much. Fuckin Hippie Parents. She was a sweet girl.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Star Cauliflower, do you mean me? That's my name. I wish it was Tracy.

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew someone name Rainbow would pop up at out the ILE woodwork. I guess it's not a bad name, but I should feel sensitive to the whole getting-picked-on-in-elementary-school issue. Did that happen to you?

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

sure, but I'm not bitter. I've been known as rainy since forever anyway, which I really like.

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i think rainy is lovely

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

and far easier to say than "Rainbow" which I think has a clumsy consonant pairing with the n and the b and therefore is a stupid name.

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, rainy, I totally assumed you were called "rainy" because your full name was Lorraine!! "Rainbow"?? You are officially the first individual I've ever known who actually has a hippie first name. That's... wow.

(Ha, thus speaks a female named Deanna....)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Even though hippie names give a kind of River Phoenix interest value, I'm saving up $151 to have it changed by deed poll, its an albatross around my neck.

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Even though hippie names give a kind of River Phoenix interest value, I'm saving up $151 to have it changed by deed poll, its an albatross around my neck.

Oh really? I suppose this action would make a great deal of sense, though a bit of me is kinda hoping you hang onto the name because -- well, because it's your name. Though if you're looking for name suggestions -- maybe you can take up Lorraine? That way the "rainy" nickname will still be applicable to you.

Though -- you know. Your choice. :)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, I meant I'm "changing" it to rainy! Now I will get back to the "what would your parents have named you had their lifestyle choice been different" thread!

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian.

Which is why it annoys me even *more* that my brother nicked the name "Ian" even though his birth certificate says Hamish. Stupid yanks can't pronounce Hamish so he stole *my* name. Grrrrr.

The 120 Days Of Streatham (kate), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)
