But there was so little buildup to this year's (like, to my knowlege, none at all - it just came on my TV after something else ended) and the production was so cheap, that it was almost like a parody. Not that it was ever the greatest thing in the world, but it used to have at least a little class. At least I thought the analogy was, Miss America compared to other beauty pageants was like the SI swimsuit issue compared to porn. But not anymore. I mean, Clay Aiken sang the theme song, and that was like the classiest thing about it. The host was more of a completely plastic nobody than you'd even expect.
But the thing that really boggled my mind was this: if you didn't know, a few years ago they went to the women being barefoot for the swimsuit competition. There were a few news stories about it at the time. Makes sense, a swimsuit and heels makes it look kind of like a skanky "best buns" competition or something. But now, inexplicably (as far as I know), they're back to swimsuits with heels! I mean, granted, us guys kind of want to see them look like sleazy hoes, but it's kind of unsettling when they actually do it. And the most disturbing part is that they were like, "No, this really is too sexist and degrading for us... No wait, now it's not!"

No. When was this even on television? Saturday? No one is going to watch it then, and if it was Sunday then it's up against the Emmys.
Between Jon Bonet Ramsay and the overall creepy nostalgia (and just plain creepiness) that surrounds Miss America/Universe/Galactic Center/etc. I think it's about time to hammer a stake into the heart of all beauty pageants once and for all.

Actors will tell you it's hard to work with puppets. Same goes for puppies. This may explain a certain tenetiveness in her line readings throughout. For this scene, I think she needed to go for... broad humor.

The new one lives in PARK SLOPE. (She's from Alabama.) How uncool.

Miss New York won AGAIN this year, this time she's of Indian descent. The answer to her question left something to be desired, but her dancing was exquisite and she definitely had the coolest/most flattering gown. She was a refreshing contrast with Miss Georgia and Miss...Oklahoma (?) who were the blonde and brunette pageant queen type to the bone.

You can see the little puffs of indignant hate smoke from miles away. Did you see her talent performance? It was not exactly exquisite by classical standards, but it was way way way way more interesting than some of the sad warbling on that stage.

One of the strange things about twitter is that it suddenly gives a national platform to stuff that morons used to just think to themselves or say quietly to their friends.

Not a great dancer, but no worse than most of the other "talent" segments I've seen
― #fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Monday, 16 September 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)
xp Oh hey thanks! Hm strange but neat!
― Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 16 September 2013 20:21 (twelve years ago)
I'm not sure what "great" would necessarily look like in Bollywood + trad Indian fusion so I couldn't presume to say. But that looks extremely difficult and I enjoyed it.
― Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 16 September 2013 20:24 (twelve years ago)
i listened with the sound off but it seemed way too fast!
NB i know nothing about that style of dance
― sing, all ye shitizens of slumerica (k3vin k.), Monday, 16 September 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)
It's kind of extra bullshit anyway since I'd say her real talent was graduating with honors or whatever from U of M with two science degrees iirc.
― Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Monday, 16 September 2013 20:29 (twelve years ago)
Yeah I'm no expert in bollywood dance but I've seen it done before and she just didn't seem very graceful or something, IDK. I don't see any need to be overgenerous about it, most contestants who sing are mediocre at it, most who play instruments are mediocre at it, etc. It's not carnegie hall, it's a weird hotness competition with some "well-roundedness" measures thrown in.
― #fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Monday, 16 September 2013 20:36 (twelve years ago)
Some of the moves were pretty impressive just on an athletic "damn, she can do that" level
― #fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Monday, 16 September 2013 20:38 (twelve years ago)
And that's what set her apart from the feeble warblers around her. One young lady did some impressive baton twirling in a bedazzled leg brace, but she got cut.
The part on her knees twirling? Please, that's hard as hell. Try it!
